In the late 80's / early 90's Hulme was considered the UK's roughest , most deprived area. It was considered a no go zone even by Greater Manchester police.
Nah! It looked rough on the surface but I never felt intimidated there - it had a few scumbag scrotes around but most of the residents were Students , Crusties and Trustafarian middle class slum cruisers trying to be more Bohemian than the next dreadhead. Working class white estates like Ancoats/ Collyhurst / Miles Platting were and still are a LOT rougher - and as for Salford late 80's and 90's - that was real hardcore crim scary...phew!!!
had fab times there in the mid 80,s no probs..just don.t.. move around on your own!!!

When I lived there 1980/81 you couldnt go and cash your giro on your own as you would be relieved of it
