The wolf keeps the grazers moving so they can not eat until they kill the vegetation. The same vegetation that beavers eat. They did not discover this until after the wolves disappeared. Put the wolves back and the herds had to keep moving and eventually the beavers recovered. Good thing we saved you a few wolves.

In my hunting area, since the federal protection act for the wolves have made a recovery. Most people also don't know that wolves are indiscriminate killers; they don't just kill what they eat. They will kill a deer take two bites and leave the carcass to rot.

Another thing they don't mention is the surge of coyote's in the US. a coyote is a competing predator that is extremely difficult to trap and kill and breeds like a rabbit. This pest also contributed to the near extinction of the wolf. By eating it's food source.
At this point, why are we preserving wolves? If we can store DNA and clone animals, what point is there in keeping these dangerous animals around? Humans have figured out how to control the populations of other animals, so there is no need for wolves. It seems like the native americans really only have religious reasons for keeping these monsters around. It's not like wolves are preventing global warming.

When I'm in the wilderness, I am awestruck by the natural beauty and ruggedness of the American back country. I am for restoring wolf and bear populations where practicable. I do not believe that wolves should be hunted unless they are absolutely knocking "natural" wildlife populations out of balance. Cattle does not need to be raised in wilderness territory. Cattle can be raised in mass on the plains of California and the midwest.

The wolf feeds so many other animals with a single kill of a deer or elk, as other animals eat the parts of the dead animal that the wolf doesn't, this goes right down to tiny bettles and microrganisms being fed as well as other large canivorous predators who have insufficient hunting skills. Without the wolf, so many animals would starve and their population would greatly decrease. while priamry consumers such as deer or rabbit would face massive exponential gowth. The wolf is necessary.

@Ross175 Yellowstone Park is a good example. They discovered after they lost the wolf, they were facing the disappearance of the beaver. Why? The wolf keeps the grazers moving so they can not eat until they kill the vegetation. The same vegetation that beavers eat. They did not discover this until after the wolves disappeared. Put the wolves back and the herds had to keep moving and eventually the beavers recovered. Good thing we saved you a few wolves.

Otherwise the truth is the whites in that area the invasive species who have thrown the entire ecosystem out of whack. In my hunting area, since the federal protection act for the wolves have made a recovery. Most people also don't know that wolves are indiscriminate killers; they don't just kill what they eat. They will kill a deer take two bites and leave the carcass to rot.

@EconoChallenge I was there, but not right after the kill. the deer that I found was there for about 4 days, and not in a high human traffic area. The kill also happened before hunting season (which is why I was there.)
Another thing they don't mention is the surge of coyote's in the US. a coyote is a competing predator that is extremely difficult to trap and kill and breeds like a rabbit. This pest also contributed to the near extinction of the wolf. By eating it's food source.

At this point, why are we preserving wolves? If we can store DNA and clone animals, what point is there in keeping these dangerous animals around? Humans have figured out how to control the populations of other animals, so there is no need for wolves. It seems like the native americans really only have religious reasons for keeping these monsters around. It's not like wolves are preventing global warming.

The missing bit of information is the connection between different beings in the natural world. We know a lot about the wolf. We do not know a lot about the connection between the wolf and the rest of the natural enviroment. In the past we have found out more about the connection after the animal is gone for good.

Humans are another top predator that can perform the same function of controlling the populations of these animals. And if we can't, we can always just bring them back from extinction through cloning.

We have the exact same debate going on here in Sweden, the hunters feel the wolves are taking their pastime away from them. Starting last year there will be a yearly wolf hunt now keeping their number at 200. 15.000 hunters out in the woods trying to kill 30 wolves. They say wolfs are dangerous although there are no recorded killings, fresher then 150 years, but only last weekend a hunter killed a skier.

@Ghouma We had one recorded case recently of a man killed by a pack of wolves. Until this story I believed what you believe. Still I wanted to know more and it turns out there was more to the story. The pack of wolves that killed this man had become familar with and comfortable around people. They were feeding at the local garbage dump. The coroner's report recomended the government put a fense around the dump. The point. Normal wild wolves do not kill humans. They are terrified of us.

@sardakur Wolves are helping to keep the river running through Yellowstone National park from eroding its banks. That connection was found during a study to discover why beavers were disappearing. Turns out wolves keep the herbivores from eating the young trees and underbrush to death. The wolves will keep the herds moving so they only get a chance to graze. This keeps vegetation healthy and able to withstand the flooding of the rivers. Cool.
