Cary Grant could do it all--drama, comedy, suspense, romance. If he hadn't been so darned gorgeous, he'd have got the recognition as an actor that he deserved.
Jesus, sweet mother of Mary, never did I see that one coming. God, that was . . . undescribable. And Cary . . . I can't believe he's the one that did it. It's shocking, but then at the same time, it's just wow. I know now that Cary could've done anything; he did do anything.
You should try to see Brute Force made in 1947. It has a short but definitely homoerotic whipping on an inmate by the Captain of the guard (the inmate didn't enjoy it)
I must be sick because I found the scene funny - how could the guy not run away, take Cary down or fight back in some way. Ridiculously funny. It's just a scene folks with a camera man and director behind these guys. It's not real life.
Thanks for posting. We are so used to Cary being the perfect gentleman, it's hard to watch him being "violent". At the same time, there's something "funny" about seeing him "ticked off". Check out the you tube video 'hair of the dog' with Cary Grant for several of Cary's ticked off moments. :-) It's great!
I think you have to see the whole movie before you judge just this scene. This was before Cary Grant had really established himself as a leading man. So yes, it's out of character in comparison to later films, and it IS rather shocking for the time period. However, I really like this movie.
I'm not sure what's more shocking--Cary Grant whipping a guy to tears, or Cary Grant's poor acting chops before he became famous. This is something Robert Mitchum should've done, had the timing been better.
I came back to watch this AGAIN. God. So sexy.

Good example of bad writing, bad directing and horrible acting.

This clip proves that Cary Grant is officially the only man who could ever give Indiana Jones a lesson in how to use a whip.

If Mitchum had been around during that time, it would feel like Cary Grant was trying to do Mitchum. Still, that clip was traumatizing...
