I really cry every time I watch this video. I love how Elvis isn't singing over most of the playback. Even if the woman is an actress, the point gets across. I love this song and video so much!
Just wondering, i don't think my mother has dementia, but she does go on about the past a lot, and she doesn't seem to grasp that i don't even know the people that she is talking about because i was like 3 years old at the time. Anyway, i hope she lives forever just because i love her
It so sad to see my dad going through something similar, he slips from time to time he is a famous dr. with so many prices and how he tries to come back but with all the medication is hard for him to keep focous...... and to think that I may go like that in 30 years???? it also breaks my heart, we only can keep them alive thinking of them when they were THEMSELVES and not at the end of their lives, I understand what you are feeling merkinidgit sorry.
My mom had been an advanced amateur classical pianist before crippling arthritis silenced her. Once, years later, she pounded out a spirited piece on the air above her hospital bed in a foggy mixture of dementia and narcotics. Although I loved this song as the teenager of a single mom in the '70s, it absolutely breaks my heart in my middle-aged 2012.

Elvis makes this wonderful video that even MTV loved then, just in case you were feeling too warm and fuzzy about him, he makes the video for "This Town" .
If you listen you can hear him actually singing along with the track. The director liked it so much he kept his voice in the final edit. Listen you can hear it.
Thank you Henry Puny for this beautiful song... come walk with me and lets wonder off the rest of my days in this little dark place of mine were he left only his memories that are making me loose my mind. Thank you for been there, we all need friends like you....
My mother is 95 years old and was recently admitted to a nursing home. I now understand about "those who shout her name and steal her clothes". All of my mothers socks were gone within a week. I had to but her more and write her name on them. The next time you see an elderly person, please remember that they are just like you, only older.
There's a lot more of Paul McCartney in this, particularly the arrangement, that he gets popular credit for. Veronica is a beautiful name, I gave it as a middle name to our second daughter in 1994 but it somehow never made it from the maternity ward armband onto her birth certificate, my bad. We'll have to do something about that.
He performed this song when he was the musical guest on SNL way back when. I think it was Mary Tyler Moore who hosted that night. He absolutely killed on stage - just a fantastic performance. Anyone else remember it?
A remarkably poignant song, with an Abba-esque melody. It is testament to the heavy-hitting nature of the album (Spike) that a song about Alzheimer's was regarded as (relative) light relief and was released as a single in the UK.

I love the song but can't help feeling that Elvis is tad amused by the whole situation and conveys a kind of smug, superior attitude regarding the Veronica situation. Does anybody else see that?

I've always loved this song, but I appreciate it much more now that I'm older and I have personally been through this very same experience with my grandmother.
0:02 The lady on the far right reading a book, is my mum she looked after the old lady who played the part of elvis's grandmother. (: hahaha she's famous.
you do realize this was also written about Liverpool, don't you? Think about it: how she used to be, then fallen on hard times, plus it is a typical Irish Catholic scouse old fashioned girl's name. It all makes sense. And who wrote it?
@markjoeydavo oops tricky1 LT did! EJ dedicate a song 2J Lennon, Guns 'n Roses dedicate a song 2F Mercury, 2top it Lady Gaga , 'gaga' after FM:) sings Alejandro..what a confusion of 'veronicas' :)
My mother was in a nursing home the last months of her life. She had a stroke. She tried to talk to me, and sometimes I could understand what she was saying. Other times, not so much. I wondered if her words sounded clear in her head and were failed by her tongue. I'll never know until I see her again. And I desperately hope I will.
It is so good, that somebody knows... what it is like with an elderly parent. You want them to continue on but they get very tired and they want to give up. Dear lord, let's hear it for the strugglin seniors!
Thank you for this video. Actually my name IS Veronica. I love this song, but had never seen the video. But from just the words I knew-and ironically I knew I would end up the same-alone-and who knows where. Well, I recently lost my husband of 27 years. We were everything to each other. I have been living with chronic pain for the last 20 yrs, and he "took care of me"-I am only 52, but already having such a hard time figuring things out.-I am lost w/out him-and feel as if half of me is gone.
I have always loved this song not knowing it is the song I am living with my mom, now,she calls me Pat(that is not my name ) and how is my baby. I have to accept her mantra and say I am flattered to think I have a baby, I'm 59 Oct. 8th,
I can sympathise with you, My Father in law who lived with us succumbed to the trait of coming into My Wife and Mine,s room at 3am and putting the light on and saying"Come on Margaret it,s time to get up"
I work in an assisted living home, transporting elderly people. Every day i see people like the lady in this video; sometimes i wonder why we live so long, or get so sick, that we forget the things that make up our lives. Somehow this song is attached to my soul......
Never seen the clip before. Interesting though. I used to work with people like Veronica, and, yeah, we don't know what's going on in their heads. But maybe one day we will. Sure hope so.
This song reminds me of my Granny. Her name was Lucy. She had Alzheimer's and spent her last years in a nursing home.
It also reminds me of my Granny-In-Law. Her name is Veronica, and she is as sharp as a razor, and the name is where the comparison to this song might have to end! :)
This makes me think of my Granny. Her name wasn't Veronica; it was Lucy. She had Alzheimer's and spent her last years in a nursing home.
This song also reminds me of my Granny-In-Law. Her name is Veronica, but she's is as sharp as a bloody razor, so the name is where the comparison might end! :)
I"ve loved this song ever since it came out but never really knew the words (they ARE a bit hard to understand) till I saw this video with the lyrics. I guess I could have easily looked up the lyrics but just never did.
Thanks for posting this. I hadn't heard all the lyrics before, and I'd never heard the commentary. This is a much richer and more moving experience than just hearing the tune on the radio.
i was also named after this song @CallMEcrazi828 ! Well, this song and the flower called Veronica! I love my name...it's unique! love this song as well
@pingui0987 Yes, McCartney also co-wrote this song and one other on EC's 1989 recording "Spike"... At the time of that release, McCartney compared EC's songwriting talent to John Lennon saying he enjoyed writing with EC more than anyone since John
yes, the man of holly glasses and the name of elvis.. :D i forgot what his real name is.. all i recall is that the name was nearly 26 letters long.. OK, no, i'm just having fun!
I just saw Elvis Costello preform last night (4/13) at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara....It was a great night, but his live verison of this song made me cry like a baby..... I miss my aunt Lilly.
Such a wonderful track - happy yet sad. I understand precisely where Elvis is coming from and he must have had first hand experience of such issues to write such a moving piece.
I really cry every time I watch this video. I love how Elvis isn't singing over most of the playback. Even if the woman is an actress, the point gets across. I love this song and video so much!

I recorded this video on a VHS tape, back when it was first aired. I think "Veronica" is one of the finest pop songs ever written.

I"ve loved this song ever since it came out but never really knew the words (they ARE a bit hard to understand) till I saw this video with the lyrics. I guess I could have easily looked up the lyrics but just never did.
Gosh what a beautiful, sad song.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't heard all the lyrics before, and I'd never heard the commentary. This is a much richer and more moving experience than just hearing the tune on the radio.

Thank you for that - all there used to be here was that awful concert video - what was up with his voice on that anyway? Strained maybe?

@zwartepiet412 really ???????
pingui0987 1 year ago
@pingui0987 Yes, McCartney also co-wrote this song and one other on EC's 1989 recording "Spike"... At the time of that release, McCartney compared EC's songwriting talent to John Lennon saying he enjoyed writing with EC more than anyone since John

Such a wonderful track - happy yet sad. I understand precisely where Elvis is coming from and he must have had first hand experience of such issues to write such a moving piece.
