  • I really cry every time I watch this video. I love how Elvis isn't singing over most of the playback. Even if the woman is an actress, the point gets across. I love this song and video so much!

  • He is DEFINITELY talking about someone real that he knew in this. Veronica may be fiction, but the person he based her on is most certainly NOT.

  • Is it weird that I'm 11 and love Elvis Costello? :) Just wondering.

  • A far cry from his rambunctious period in The 70's. He mellowed out in The80's. Nice tune, Mr. Costello.

  • Great songwriters can do great songs about anything.

  • Such a sad song. I think almost everyone can relate

  • Just wondering, i don't think my mother has dementia, but she does go on about the past a lot, and she doesn't seem to grasp that i don't even know the people that she is talking about because i was like 3 years old at the time. Anyway, i hope she lives forever just because i love her

  • It so sad to see my dad going through something similar, he slips from time to time he is a famous dr. with so many prices and how he tries to come back but with all the medication is hard for him to keep focous...... and to think that I may go like that in 30 years???? it also breaks my heart, we only can keep them alive thinking of them when they were THEMSELVES and not at the end of their lives, I understand what you are feeling merkinidgit sorry.

  • My mom had been an advanced amateur classical pianist before crippling arthritis silenced her. Once, years later, she pounded out a spirited piece on the air above her hospital bed in a foggy mixture of dementia and narcotics. Although I loved this song as the teenager of a single mom in the '70s, it absolutely breaks my heart in my middle-aged 2012.

  • One of my favorite collaberations by Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney

  • haha my name is veronika... spelled different but still weird when he sings it. haha sweet song

  • tears..

  • This song reminds me of my Bartending days.. LONG ISLAND.. I remember telling them.. This is about an old lady...... Now I am that old lady.. Life is coming full circle.. Really this too reminds me my mother. She bounced around the years.. Asking How is Janine.? Janine died in 2004.. thank god Regina jumped.. in and said.. Oh she is GREAT.. . Then by the end of the visit.. she said.. HOw many years has it been she Janine Died?

  • @marinemomma62 This story is a solemn reminder to cherish our parents.

  • heard someplace this song was about veronica lake the pin up/movie star of the 40s.

  • Just say my mom in a nursing home.. My dad was a Navy..man in World War 2... Her middle name is Veronca .. My is Veronica.. Boy Soon it will be me in that Chair.LOL.... My hubby is a Navy man too!!! Love your music Elvis Costello..

  • I used to work in a home..it is so sad.

  • The only problem with Elvis Costello was he was such a smart song writer. One oif the best of his times.

  • Great song. A sensitive topic performed with surprising ease. Good that they added his comments to the video.

    Thanks a lot for uploading.

  • think the images of young veronica sum this song up ... do you remember we were all beautiful once and the fun she had ... same person different age ... this is you in later life ... get it ?... respect your elders x

  • Thumbs up if you love this song because your name is Veronica and it's awesome :)

  • Huh. My name is Veronica and this is one of my favorite songs.

  • @The1CamBo

    And You say that why?

  • @michaeloneill1993 It's just something about the melody.

  • @The1CamBo You Are truly a dumb Bitch

  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥love it! i guess i'm already startin to forget......

  • Elvis makes this wonderful video that even MTV loved then, just in case you were feeling too warm and fuzzy about him, he makes the video for "This Town" .

  • If you listen you can hear him actually singing along with the track. The director liked it so much he kept his voice in the final edit. Listen you can hear it.

  • @kpboland1969 Thank You!!!! Someone who Finally Realizes its elvis!!!

  • @michaeloneill1993 I just learnt about this on Pop-Up Video and after that, I had to keep playing those parts over and over again. Lovely.

  • @kpboland1969 How funny! I never noticed that till just now! That's awesome! :-)

  • Thats my name!

  • Ty for this Mr Costello! You are a true gem!

  • Thank you Henry Puny for this beautiful song... come walk with me and lets wonder off the rest of my days in this little dark place of mine were he left only his memories that are making me loose my mind. Thank you for been there, we all need friends like you....

  • that was 22 years ago when we were young- now we are the old geisers

  • My mother is 95 years old and was recently admitted to a nursing home. I now understand about "those who shout her name and steal her clothes". All of my mothers socks were gone within a week. I had to but her more and write her name on them. The next time you see an elderly person, please remember that they are just like you, only older.

  • There's a lot more of Paul McCartney in this, particularly the arrangement, that he gets popular credit for. Veronica is a beautiful name, I gave it as a middle name to our second daughter in 1994 but it somehow never made it from the maternity ward armband onto her birth certificate, my bad. We'll have to do something about that.

  • He performed this song when he was the musical guest on SNL way back when. I think it was Mary Tyler Moore who hosted that night. He absolutely killed on stage - just a fantastic performance. Anyone else remember it?

  • A remarkably poignant song, with an Abba-esque melody. It is testament to the heavy-hitting nature of the album (Spike) that a song about Alzheimer's was regarded as (relative) light relief and was released as a single in the UK.

  • Thanks so much for haring the music video. and it's so nice to have the words too!

  • a very powerful song I think I get it Mr Costello

  • Oh wow, I like this. I'm already a big EC fan, and watching your video with the commentary has made me appreciate his humanity even more.

  • RIP olive.. i miss you.

  • Brilliant lyrics Love EC

  • Such a sad song ... time is so unforgiving. Try to remember that inside the old people you see, the young person they were never went away.

  • @jmacleve very well written. so true!!! I do my best to see the young person inside of everyone... We will all grow old if we are lucky

  • I agree wware, especially since MTV never played the commentaries at the beginning, just the end ones.

  • my name is veronika ahha lol this is a rly nice song <3

  • Yeah, Limeys are deep.. just ask Hollywood.

  • Beautiful song. Paul McCartney co-wrote it.

  • Getting old sucks, especially if you have lost all your teeth.

  • I went to pay my cell phone bill today and the cute young girl who worked the counter name is Veronica. and I said like the Elvis Costello song..she said who?..That is when i knew I was OLD!!LOL!!..she immediately put it up on YOU TUBE and I think we may have gotten a new EC fan..just thought I'd pass it on!!! Peace

  • @LBjim That is a great story.

  • @LBjim Love it! Great story. She'll never forget hearing that song for the first time! Thanks for sharing this.

  • This had been removed for some time. I'm glad to see even this rough mix back.

Deeply touching for anyone who has had the experience of loving someone who was being lost to age and Alzheimer's/

  • Elvis Costello viene al D.F. que envidia y aqui con una de sus rolas comerciales mas sonadas y rolon de pasada je je y me parece que el vapuleado ultimamaente de

Mccartney contribuyo en algo para esta cancion ...

  • I love Veronica ... the song and the name!

  • The voice over is part of the video. You either get it or you don't. Obviously not.

I think it's something you don't understand. Not yet anyway.....

  • The voice over is part of the video. You either get it or you don't. Obviously not.

  • Whats with the extra dubbed-in crappy voice?

  • @drmr007 You are obviously A dumb one...

  • @theonlyman9319 Enlighten me then, oh wise one.

  • @drmr007 It's Elvis' Voice dummy

I think it's something you don't understand. Not yet anyway...

  • Enjoyed this so much. thanks for posting, it's an excellent song

  • Video made by The Rich Kids (Evan English & Paul Goldman) in Sunbury, Melbourne, Australia. The Rich Kids previously made I Wanna Be Loved for Elvis, where like this video, a separate audio track of Elvis singing was recorded on set and mixed for the video only. His stories were recorded on set as a tribute to Veronica.

  • I love the song but can't help feeling that Elvis is tad amused by the whole situation and conveys a kind of smug, superior attitude regarding the Veronica situation. Does anybody else see that?

  • @blabblab1212 I feel more like he is having fond memories, remembering her as a personality and amazed by the history she carried with her. I know that's how I feel when I care for Alzheimer's patients. When he says "I would just sit there and bounce around the years with her," I know exactly what he means. It's like time travel.

  • @blabblab1212 yep.

  • @nauort23 I thought so.

  • hahahahahahahahah ich heisee auch elvis und bin mit eine veronica zs hahahaha

  • A big tx 2EC 4reminding us we r still lucid! Sadly i also relate this 2G Papa,'NO" he didnt suffered from an unknown m condition alzheimer's', he had a brain defiency caused by 'head injury', in his case turned out 2b a shortage of oxygen sypply 2the brain 'Epilepsy'-nowadays treatable, unfortunately labelled! Perhaps missunderstood? I think is sumthing we dont understand, not yet anyways!! U thought me how 2keep the ball rolling - RIP '2011'

  • Reminds me of my grandmother as well. RIP. And one of my favorite songs of all time. Such emotion and raw meaning in the song. This is one of those true brilliant gems. A rare miracle of music.

  • I think many of the comments here testify to what a great song this is. It almost always seems to draw the same feelings from listeners.

  • I've always loved this song, but I appreciate it much more now that I'm older and I have personally been through this very same experience with my grandmother.

  • 0:02 The lady on the far right reading a book, is my mum she looked after the old lady who played the part of elvis's grandmother. (: hahaha she's famous.

  • This song reminds me of my Veronica...my beloved Grandmother. RIP xxx

  • This video makes me feel sad for the people who suffer from Alzheimer's, as well as their families.

  • you do realize this was also written about Liverpool, don't you? Think about it: how she used to be, then fallen on hard times, plus it is a typical Irish Catholic scouse old fashioned girl's name. It all makes sense. And who wrote it?

  • @markjoeydavo oops tricky1 LT did! EJ dedicate a song 2J Lennon, Guns 'n Roses dedicate a song 2F Mercury, 2top it Lady Gaga , 'gaga' after FM:) sings Alejandro..what a confusion of 'veronicas' :)

  • My name <3

  • "Lie to Me" last night. Definitely inspired by this song.

  • I adore this song, and it makes me treasure the time I can still spend with my 95-year old grandmother.

  • I adore this song, and it makes me treasure the time I can still spend with my 95-year old grandmother.

  • My mother was in a nursing home the last months of her life. She had a stroke. She tried to talk to me, and sometimes I could understand what she was saying. Other times, not so much. I wondered if her words sounded clear in her head and were failed by her tongue. I'll never know until I see her again. And I desperately hope I will.

  • @getabox im sorry

  • my name is veronica!:)

  • It is so good, that somebody knows... what it is like with an elderly parent. You want them to continue on but they get very tired and they want to give up. Dear lord, let's hear it for the strugglin seniors!

  • Oftentimes, it is good just to bounce around the years with her.

  • my name is veronica :)

  • Thank you for this video. Actually my name IS Veronica. I love this song, but had never seen the video. But from just the words I knew-and ironically I knew I would end up the same-alone-and who knows where. Well, I recently lost my husband of 27 years. We were everything to each other. I have been living with chronic pain for the last 20 yrs, and he "took care of me"-I am only 52, but already having such a hard time figuring things out.-I am lost w/out him-and feel as if half of me is gone.

  • @rocknrollfantasy100 I'm sorry for your loss :(

  • @heightz187 thank you, that means so much to me!

  • I got this song and meaning and now, we are dealing with it, my family and the Veronica type Mom...

  • I have always loved this song not knowing it is the song I am living with my mom, now,she calls me Pat(that is not my name ) and how is my baby. I have to accept her mantra and say I am flattered to think I have a baby, I'm 59 Oct. 8th,

  • @peppertee

    Belated Birhday greetings peppertee,

I can sympathise with you, My Father in law who lived with us succumbed to the trait of coming into My Wife and Mine,s room at 3am and putting the light on and saying"Come on Margaret it,s time to get up"

    My best wishes to you.

  • Elvis Costello Rocks !!!

  • P.S. I love the way you put the lyrics as bubbles. sweet.

  • I just internetted this about elvis costello: elvis is so worth his weight in diamond crusted platinum endangered species and sharkfins.

  • I work in an assisted living home, transporting elderly people. Every day i see people like the lady in this video; sometimes i wonder why we live so long, or get so sick, that we forget the things that make up our lives. Somehow this song is attached to my soul......

  • Dang, this makes me want to cry.

  • Co-written with Paul McCartney.

  • Love this song!

  • Did the days drag by, did the favors wade. Did he roam on the town all the while?

my name is veronica too:) Thank you for posting!

  • i think i will end up like Veronica

  • so is this song talking about his grandma or mom or who?

  • @nibornna The song was inspired by his grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer's.

  • I'm love this song....considering that my name is Veronica. :)

  • this is nice! thanks for posting it.

  • thanks for putting this up :)

  • Never seen the clip before. Interesting though. I used to work with people like Veronica, and, yeah, we don't know what's going on in their heads. But maybe one day we will. Sure hope so.

  • My name is Veronica, and I have had time when I wasn't sure my name was Veronica. :)

  • Dope, this is finally posted, thanks quality excellent post man.

  • awesome- thanks for writing and tributing those who deserve a lifetime of respect and usually just get laughed off

  • it's weird. my names is veronica and it's like written about me. i just hope i don't become that OLD version of Veronica. love the song tho<3

  • This song reminds me of my Granny. Her name was Lucy. She had Alzheimer's and spent her last years in a nursing home.

It also reminds me of my Granny-In-Law. Her name is Veronica, and she is as sharp as a razor, and the name is where the comparison to this song might have to end! :)

  • Great Tune!!

  • OMG. I love this!!!!!

  • I recorded this video on a VHS tape, back when it was first aired. I think "Veronica" is one of the finest pop songs ever written.

  • I"ve loved this song ever since it came out but never really knew the words (they ARE a bit hard to understand) till I saw this video with the lyrics. I guess I could have easily looked up the lyrics but just never did.

Gosh what a beautiful, sad song.

  • This makes my heart hurt. :((

  • Thanks for posting this. I hadn't heard all the lyrics before, and I'd never heard the commentary. This is a much richer and more moving experience than just hearing the tune on the radio.

  • @wware Thanks, Thats Why i got it on youtube, i just wanted people to hear the actual full version of the song :)

  • @wware Totally agree, makes you think aswell.

  • thank you so much for posting...as usual it makes me cry...

  • indeed a 1989 lost classic.

  • im using you r video to practice it while i sing thelyrics its just that i dont remember them

  • paul mccartney played bass on this song

  • @zwartepiet412 really ???????

  • @pingui0987 Yes, McCartney also co-wrote this song and one other on EC's 1989 recording "Spike"... At the time of that release, McCartney compared EC's songwriting talent to John Lennon saying he enjoyed writing with EC more than anyone since John

  • love this song, just played it 3 times one after the other........mite just press play again:)

  • Pleasant song

  • yes, the man of holly glasses and the name of elvis.. :D i forgot what his real name is.. all i recall is that the name was nearly 26 letters long.. OK, no, i'm just having fun!

    but, seriously folks!

  • Kind of a musical cousin of John Prine's "Hello in There."

  • This song makes me cry.

  • this one always makes me cry

  • Sublime

  • I just saw Elvis Costello preform last night (4/13) at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara....It was a great night, but his live verison of this song made me cry like a baby..... I miss my aunt Lilly.

  • @ou8jaime

I can imagine - this one brings tears to my eyes too!

  • Costello has many great songs! Rock on buddy!

  • Such a wonderful track - happy yet sad. I understand precisely where Elvis is coming from and he must have had first hand experience of such issues to write such a moving piece.

  • haaaa my boss dedicated this song to me, cuz my name's Veronica :)
