@bunnygal....wow U live by the filmore, cool. Ya, what a memory. I actually went there to see the James Gang, on the same bill with Sabbath. Sabbath opened for James
Gang. No I think they played second, It seems to me like Seatrain played first. A rockin band with a violin player. After listining to this recording I think the part where Tony Iommi was standing there playing and glaring was when he was doing that solo thing. But I did'nt hear an interuption on the recording. maby was edited
@digiminerGlad to meet someone who was at this show! This was history in the making :) . Was there alot of hippies at this show? Plus I've read somewhere that the opening act was Sugarloaf(who also made one of my favorite songs"Green Eyed Lady"). I like James Gang too. Was anyone really into Sabbath that night? From the sounds of it alot of people sounded amazed while others were like WTF? I swear it sounds like someone is saying"You all have nice hair!" during the second verse of 'Black Sabbath"
I was at this show. They left the stage for about 20 minutes. I always believed they got booed off the stage. When they returned Tony Iommi stood on the very front edge of the stage, He seemed to be leaning out over the crowd, with a crazy leer on his face and started to play. not moving, just leering at each person in the crowd. Everyone was scared shitless. It changed from a concert to an event.
@digiminer ...Great story! Wow....I live just a few blocks away from the old Fillmore in SF. It's now a Honda car dealership, but everytime I pass by it I can't believe Sabbath played there. Anyways listening to this show I notice it sounds like they had a good response during the first half.(If you listen closely you can hear a hippie say "FARROUT MAN!" after the ending of the song 'Black Sabbath')...Although it does sound like a heckler in the crowd during 'Hand of Doom'....
How could the bikers/Hells Angels be into the Grateful Dead at this EXACT moment in time in San Fran and NOT be heavy into this shit?? MAaybe they were but Hunter S. Thompson never wrote about it - I dunno.
i guess after this show the hippies pulled the flowers out of their hair an rolled them up and smoked em, the end of flower power as we know it

Ya, HAHA, there was a lot of hippies there. But let me set this up for
you. I think prolly everyone was there to see some rock from
the James Gang. There was a lot of LSD floating around, and you could'nt
see through all the smoke. Then this band came out, dressed in dark, evil
looking costumes. Wearing crucifix's. They all had big hair. Tony Iommi
looked like he had a dark robe on and his hair looked like he had a monk
hood on, and he did'nt act like a rock star. He just stood there glaring.

belting out this ungodly sound. I don't think the people got it at first.
But everyone I was with agreed that they got booed off the stage. I have
been to a lot of concerts and this is the only time I ever saw the whole
band leave the stage. But... when they returned... something was
different....I remember watching....transfixed...as Geezer Butler's hand
just punished his bass. They started using their music as a weapon almost.
Then people started getting a little uneasy

We had never herd anything
like this before. I felt so small. Kind of the same way I felt after
watching John Bonham do a drum solo at winterland. Or Jeff Beck, reaching
down halfway through the concert, and turning his guitar the rest of the
way up. Iconic moments in music history. And I was actually there. Pretty
Cool....
