Ya know a 13 year old is not good to have babies. This is why the idea of it being right to wait is a good idea. Then a woman having a billion kids is not healthy for the kids or woman involved. That is mental, physical, and financially. Seriously if you really want to spread the wealth of DNA then put in a sperm or egg bank. Plenty of those around the world.

Modern education teaches celibacy, abstinance, etc. the laws changed to prevent teens from anything sexual, focus on work/career, making the idea of having children something to be "put off" til later in life, overlooking that the longer the wait, the higher the risk of problems. Uneducated/poor aren't brainwashed to defer their natural roles til later...so have more kids while the educated poise to wipe out their lineage...or have just one.

Oo.. I don't think that model of "Large Gamete / Small Gamete" model because you'd have better chance with equal size gametes. However, in multicellular organisms, there is a lot of material that goes along with the DNA to make the body plan and development of an embryo happen. It's the fact that *some* things, like histone complexes and the like that drive development, make the nucleus larger and a lot of extracellular material needed as well (he mentions symbionts, like mitochondria).

Seems to happen everywhere... I have only one sister, even if I'm from Colombia I can be considered educated, but like 60% here they do have more than 4 kids and they live with the minimum salary (about 155 Euros)

iloveg, I guess if educated and richer people in your country have less children their children will be even more resourceful in comparison to the many furtherly impoverished poor people sons, hence as a male you could have even more sexual choice. I guess scores or beautiful girls there would compete to mate with a resourceful guy. You've only to choose the best one (or have many mistresses if you like so). The wealthy mates the best individuals meanwhile the poor mates the rest...

By no means am I an authority on the subject, but I thought it was always a matter of economics.

Most of the world's poor are, from my understanding, subsistence farmers. As such, there's a large demand for labor. Most of these people live hand to mouth, they don't have a lot of alternatives once they're too old to work. So kids are, basically, a retirement plan and workforce of sorts.

Of course, there's dozens of other factors.

I think you mean education, not intelligence. There are some pretty sharp, street wise scum bags out there, they just lack education and have the misfortune to be brought into a family that has low standards of social etiquette.

Educated  people having 1 child only implies this child will get a lot of economic resources (the summation of his parents wealth), meanwhile poor people with many sons means further impoverishment of their children. Maybe there is a situation in which cumulated resources are a survival benefit, and when is "stockpiling" a benefit ? A tragic event shrinking world's populace ? Or is the next evolutionary step artificial expensive genes manipulation creating a healthier, more intelligent species?
