  • The album "Gunfighter Ballads" was/is fantastic.

  • I'm not much of a country fan, but I sure am a Marty Robbins fan. Great voice, great writer. He did not write "Strawberry Roan", it is a true cowboy folk song, but so what. Nobody did it better, and nobody has since. "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" is one of the great albums of all time. It has some of Marty's songs on it, and some pure cowboy folk songs, all done excellently! I miss him a lot. He saved a lot of great folk songs from being lost.

  • for the haters get your info straight. he wrote most of his own songs, the guitar is called a mini martin and yes it really does make music and last of all at least he didn't have to use a teleprompter like some. FYI Elvis was great but he had a bad habit of not remembering the words to his songs. Check it out Elvis had the words written on pieces of paper too. Marty was fantastic.

  • Quite simply-Marty was one of the very greatest because he enjoyed what he was doing so much, and communicated that fact so easily. That's what a natural is. There were a very few others who could do it about as well but none better in ANY branch of music. Sinatra of the 50's in jazz/pop maybe. Marty made it look so easy every time.

  • @catamaranman333 He was a very talented musician whether you know it or not. He played piano, guitar, steel guitar. He wrote approximately 500 songs, a number of which went to #1. In his concerts he "played" a lot with the audience so he was not real serious about playing the guitar. He did NOT sing off of cue-cards... As ljriner commented, get our facts before you comment!

  • jimmy and stuballs,

I'm in my 6th decade...city boy. I have a simple philosophy about those that criticize artists such as Marty. Go f..k themselves! Where I grew up was not "the country". The closest I got to a horse was at the carnival or Dale Evans and his wife's Adam's Milk events. I grew to love good music no matter the color, gender, or birth place. I always respected those artist that had a message/story and could deliver it with a passion that made one feel.

  • If anyone wants to criticize an artist like him let them start from nothing, work their way up the ranks and become a star who for several decades rarely went without a hit song. I don't like country western music but I like quality. And this man had a beautiful voice. He deserves the recognition. He did something useful with his life and made a lot of people happy in the process.

  • All the Marty nuts make me laugh. To get that kind of fanatical response from me you have to: 1. Actually play the instrument you stand up there for two hours holding. 2. Remember the words to your own song....oh wait, I forgot, he didn't write any of his own material. Seriously though, because I grew uup on these songs too. Does anyone know of a video that he actually PLAYS that guitar?

  • @catamaranman333

This is a traditional western folk song, indeed he did not write it.

  • @catamaranman333 He did write most of the songs he sang. You need to get your Facts before commenting on a subject.

  • @ljriner On average, he wrote about 30% of the songs on his albums. Better than most country artists, still not enough for me to consider him a great songwriter. My comment really was aimed at this charade where he holds the guitar and pretends that he's playing as he reads the words to "his songs" off of cue-cards. It just surprises me how easily impressed by cheap music some people are. I'm still waiting for a video where he plays an instrument...

  • Can you please load the album of "By the time I get to Phoenix"?

  • i have just found marty dad and mum listened to him all the time but i just love him he can hold a great note and has the best voice and pressence for telling a story and makes you think about what he is singing about im learning to plkay his songs. people just enjoy a wonderfull entertainer the great marty robins jase

  • oboma8 just your handle shows how much brains you have. You democratic ass.

Why are you even listening to this great singer if you obviously can`t appreciate him.

    Go somewhere else you putz.

  • @dressagegal The note was from a fan and was apparently a spicy one, so he had to fan himself in reaction (acting... merely acting) I wouldn't call it "fagging out" that he made a production of it. I'm sure that whomever sent the note to him was thrilled at his reaction, as would anyone be if they saw their note being read during the middle of a performance.

  • Thanks for posting this! My dad used to sing this all the time, he's an 'old cowboy of 90 now, and off on a trail ride as I write this - yes - riding horseback at 90! I want to use this a background for the movie I'm making with pics of him with his team of horses pulling a wagon in a parade last week.

  • @uechisandan God Bless Him....Long Live Cowboys

  • can I ask why he fags out in the middle of the song? roflmao..when he whips out the note ...OMG.....my dad used to do this song...it always makes me cry when I try to sing it...now I will just visualize the faggotry in the middle and make it through...roflmao...awesome, ty for posting....oh, and I am NOT bashing monty, I LOVE him...that was just f'n funny as hell!

  • oboma08.....MARTY ROBBINS QUEER?!!!! You have sho'nuff cursed yo'self, son....Mr. Robbins was, without question, one of the greatest vocalists of any genre....and the most MAN of any man....That comment you made will bring you dire metaphysical retribution...you have mah pity

  • ohmygosh, my great grandfather used to sing this song! All I could remember was the name of it. The lyrics are a hoot!. And Marty blessed us. So sorry he died so young.

  • Lawds I got on one of these horses once, I thank the great horse spirit he decided NOT to kill me.

  • R.I.P we love you marty

  • At the Crows's Nest restaurant in Apache Junction, AZ there is a fella - JB - and a few days a week - around lunch time - he does lots of the old western ballads...Robbins and others. Since this was his dad's favorite song he does Strawberry Roane very well.

  • Thank you "MrLaw" Stu.

  • Hey Thank you! for posting Strawberry Roan and Marty Robbins.

Love those old ballads. Will try to write some.

    Thanks again,

    Debby

  • Great song about a horse!

  • sure a sunfishing son of a gun!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember my Father sitting down with me and together us playing this song over and over on cassette tape to work out the exact lyrics and writing them down. One of my favourite childhood memories. Took forever to work out, "the man aint alive".

Thanks Marty, and thanks for posting.

  • my papaw sings this and ol red all the time and i love to listen to him

  • Marty rocks!!! Was raised listening to him...my first concert at the age of 8...thanks Dad!!!

  • Anyone that can write a neg. coment on Marty ,needs to fill their big old cowboy hat full of horse sh-t , and pull it down over their ears!!!!! Case closed!!!

  • YOU AIN'T EVEN JOKIN'!

Marty was one of THE best songwriters that ever walked around down here. His word choice and turn of phrase tell definite and believable stories. Love it.

I grew up hearing my Dad cover his tunes-Dad's #1 musical hero was Robbins.

    Can't say I blame him.

  • Well put!

  • But, this wasn't Marty's.

Who did this in the mid-fifties???

  • Marty. Gunfighter Ballads was recorded in 1949 IIRC

  • @fhardyb The first recording I recall of this and several other Broncbustin, Bullridin,Cowboys dyin in the dirt Ballads was by Tex Ritter around 1951. I remember lots of Old Crusties singing variations (some "R" rated) from my most distant memory though. Don't know who penned it but Marty Robbins sure did the song proud!

  • @lektrikbass

it was first recorded by wilf carter, the canadian cowboy.

PS recorded after El Paso was a big hit around 1959

  • To me there were just three big country stars: Johnny Cash, Don Gibson and Marty Robbins - all gone.

  • I see negative posts below and all I ask is that you read his biography and his life story. Pure Class this man is. He was dirt poor and lived ina tent at one time. Even after he got insanely famous he never got a big head. He was known to sit after a show signing autographs,...HE WOULDNT LEAVE until there was nobody else in line. Any other star past/present more or less signs a few then goes and does their thing. He'd send roses to fans on their birthdays and various other things.

  • What's the saying? Oh yeah, takes one to know one. Oboma8 must have some sugar in his tank.

  • Actually, since I know what was happening, Marty was insanely popular with women and men. They were delivering notes from the audience, he was reading AND singing. He was always very gracious with the public, signed autographs for hours on end.

  • seriously you dont have to watch nor leave a comment.. oboma08? enough said. one of the greatest marty is... so if you have nothin good to say then get the hell out..

  • 74jimmy, Give Oboma8 hell dude. Marty rocks!!! Forever and always a Marty Robbins fan since the 60's.

  • I bet you like Brittany Spears...

  • this song makes me want to become a cowboy, bullshit aside. Thanks for posting.

  • it a good song thaqnk for posting it

  • my dad sang this to me many times, wish i could remember all the words i'd pass it to my kids

  • Thank you for posting. Great memories. My dad always sang this song. Gone now. But everytime I hear this song. The campfire and fun memories come back.

My dad had every record. Which I still enjoy.

  • I love this song! Thanks for posting!

  • A great song about a horse!

  • thanks so much for posting the rest of this fantastic marty concert. greatly appreciated

  • Marty Robbins is a unique great. He wrote many of his songs. He did not write this one but he sure does good.

He did the crossover to contempary. He is a real singer.
