in some cases refuse collectors have to start early to get the rounds done .i work as a refuse collector my self in wiltshire i dont start to 7.15 we have 12 rounds but we work until 7 pm sometimes we cant get the rounds done if not .
Unfortunately the bin men cannot win whatever they do. For some reason, far too many of the general public have a very negative attitude towards the people who are taking their rubbish away.
I drive a dustcart for a London borough and I know the problems. People will moan if you are too early, they will also moan if you are holding them up because you leave the yard at 7am.
It seems that people want their rubbish taken away, but they seem to want 'Scotty' to beam it somewhere.

It is amazing that these refuse workers at 5AM woke you up and then you had time to get your video camera open the window and video. Here is something you should get A LIFE!!! It is not an easy job and worser when turdes like you make it harder
We would love to start early in hot weather, but our council said no,,, we only get offered a cold drink once a week. we get moaned at and verbley abbussed, we do not need people moaning about starting time sa swell, so pls give the binmen some slack and hope they remember to pick up your rubbish on hot days , or it will get verry smelly
I cant believe you are moaning about your bins being emptied too early! we're lucky to have our bins emptied from our homes! I have family in Italy and they have to walk to a central bin a good 5 mins away to dispose of their rubbish! no door stop service there! I would like to see you dealing with bin fulls of rotten rubbish in last weeks heat! good work bin men I appluad you for your hard work.
look on the bright side, at getting up early meant that you had time to get in the bath before Jeremy Kyle started. Hell, you probably had time to cash your dole cheque first.
I applaud the Council's decision to allow an early start in light of the recent weather and think it very unfair that you have seen fit to complain in this way. Your video gets a thumbs down from me!
Come on, you just didn't like being woken up early! I'm sure the bin men appreciated being able to start work at that time when it was cooler and now that you know that was the reason for the early start, being the 'workers friend', you'll be pleased for them.
As Love Lewisham said the times had to be changed for one week only. I cant see why you would take it upon yourself to record the workers doing their job and post it on here! Are you seriously that bored??? If you want something more worthwhile to record. Try recording people letting their dogs litter our pathways.. They are the people who SHOULD BE EXPOSED! Not hardworking bin men who make our neighbourhoods a cleaner place!!!
i also live in lewisham and on the day of collection if im not mistaken just after the household lorry has been we get the recycling lorry come around so where you say the lorrys and staff have been halved surely they have been doubled or are you so hell bent on slagging these people you forgot.
do you have nothing better to do with your day than worry about bins!
Also, looking at the style of your house, you don't have that far to bring your own bin back in. These guys do a fantastic job, give them a break and let them start early, it has been exceptionally hot lately, i doubt you are the type to pop out and offer them a cold drink..i bet you are also the type who moaned that your bin wasn't emptied when we had snow... i echo the response by 'leftfordead2'
if you were the workers friend as you put it why would you mind if they started a little early to beat this hot weather also is it too much effort to bring your own bin in if one of them were to break their leg getting your bin out would your insurance pay out ? i very much doubt there insurance covers them to go onto your property.
@MegaTimebandit i totally agree with your remark about residents bringing their bin in/out i have been accused of damaging/breaking flowers, plant pots, cars ,motor bikes and even smashing a front door in by residents to lazy to bring out the bin
15 years ago Lewisham had the best refuse services in the country, run by Direct Team.
Bins were taken from where the householder kept them and put back there. The rounds started after 7am so as not to wake anyone. It won a Chartermark it was so good.
Unfortunately, the managers decided to set up Serviceteam - and ran down Lewisham's service. They cut vehicles, staff and wages and boasted that staff had to run between houses.
They stopped putting the bins back and started earlier.
Refuse workers were allowed to start their shifts earlier than usual for this week only. This was because of the exceptionally hot weather. We hope that most residents will understand this gesture of support to our workers. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused some residents.

@mulungungozi refuse collection must have an early start to allow lorries to do at least a few roads (i.e red route )before the traffic builds up

I opposed those cuts then and I am still campaigning for a return to the higher service standard - that means more staff running more vehicles.
So try to remember who the enemy is here - the council bosses who want a cheap service with staff on low wages.
Residents who want a better service are the workers' friends.
