It's not about punishing the rich. It's about paying their fair share. The point is that the middle class ARE getting raped, because the rich are able to externalize the costs onto them while privatizing the benefits.

The problem is the rich don't EARN it back with services, they collect the taxation value in raised rents and land prices, just as if they were personally collecting the tax. This means our present taxation and land tenure system is roughly equivalent to the rich taxing the poor and pocketing the proceeds.
