i love prog music, it's so interesting because you can do whatever you want in a song. you could combine jazz with hip hop, metal, and classical music if you wanted to, it's fun and the possibilities are endless. btw, for those of you who haven't heard them, check out Dream Theater. those guys are ridiculous
very nice video friend!! i have to ask you to give some support " bbuteo " by subscribing and leaving them a comment, i just discovered this band here in youtube and im already a big fan, they are making wonderful pop progressive rock, i can assure you that they are great, again, please check them(bbuteo) tx friend 5/5***
I asked EXACTLY the same question when I heard it!! Egg - Symphony No 2 First Movement off their self-titled album from 1970 - find it on youtube its somewhere here
To all prog fan and anyone who knows a bit about music, could you please tell me the name of the song that starts to play at 42.30 during the documentary. It starts when Tony Banks is talking. You can find the Prog Britannia doc on BBC iplayer
The song I am talking about is not featured in this video, I recently watched the doc and I am trying desperately to find it. I can describe it (if that helps??), it is a massively sustained organ or synth, rather like a drone, and has a saxophone occasionally holding notes over the top, before it releases allowing a delay to carry the sound of the sax into the distance. Any help? lol
well i'd have to hear it, but off the top of my head it sounds like you described a couple of songs by Soft Machine or Van Der Graff Generator. There's not much sax in prog, so that helps narrow it down somewhat to jazzier prog. Could also maybe be Gentle Giant or King Crimson. or some jazzier canterbury groups. Maybe you can somehow snatch the clip and re-encode it to another format so i can hear it?
OK admit am BBC Publicist but if this kinda thang - Prog - is ur guilty pleasure check out BBC South East Today's Canterbury Scene series - tracing the seeds of Prog back to Kent!
There were numerous documentaries about Metal and Punk.
Now, at long last, there's one about Progressive. And I can easily see more to come including Prog from Germany and throughout the rest of Europe and it's influence on North America and the rest of the world.
the intro droning humming music is by Procol Harum from 1968, titled: "In Held twas in I: (Glimpses of Nirvana)" from their album "Shine on Brightly". It's actually a big long 5 part suite (really 5 songs loosely tied together), with great guitar work by Robin Trower as well. Goes from psych to gloomy to humour to contemplative. Very ahead of it's time, one of the first prog bands. There's more to Procol than just "whiter shade of pale" which i never liked anyways, they were much more diverse
Hello again gingerb91 looks like we meet again on another softs related video! nope didn't forget the egg song after, but that's more obvious...the Procol humming drone is more obscure.
p.s. to all Canterbury Fans...if you havent heard yet, i'm afraid to say that Hugh Hopper died a few days ago, so go blast some Soft Machine now!
as sure as eggs is eggs. first song after the title, prog rock brit, is the Egg. find it here, type in the search area, egg symphony no.2: first movement. there is also another version if you type, egg symphony #2 movement 1, cheers
You shouldn't have replied really. From what you've just written I can say without a fear of contradiction that you seem to be quite narrow-minded dope.
I get the impression you're just after an argument fore the sake of it cause logging onto a prog video and slagging off VDGG is not going to go down well is it?
I'm a huge Yes & Genesis fan, but I agree, these programmes tend to be a 'round up the usual suspects affair'. There was nothing about Gong, Camel, Greenslade, Gryphon, The Amazing Blondel and even though they were featured, not enough about Caravan. However, as a lover of all things prog, I can safetly say that Soft Machine, Pink Flloyd and King Crimson were SHITE.
The only thing I don't like about this programme is it's failure to mention Gentle Giant.

Hey, someone has posted the whole documentary. The song I have been talking about starts 20 seconds into part 5 of 9.
Could you also name the song that plays right at the start of the clip. Finally, I can resolve this!

Quite good program but unfortunately a bit too much about Yes and Genesis and not enough about other groups.
My favourite guest - Mont Campbell.
