  • Cantilever misses the point on oh so many levels... I don't know where to start. He seems less concerned with reality than his self-absorbed stream of nonsense. Whatever. Good for him. He makes this world a much more pleasant place in which to live. Oh wait... no he doesn't.

  • "Cantilever misses the point on oh so many levels..."

DO elaborate...that must be a helluva nuanced point!

"He seems less concerned with reality than his self-absorbed stream of nonsense."

Ahhh, tu quoque. I love irony, so I appreciate this (on numerous levels)...

"He makes this world a much more pleasant place in which to live. Oh wait... no he doesn't."

I am a very bad, bad person, this is true...the world would be IMMEASURABLY improved if I were to die...you agree, right?

    :)

  • Oh, c'mon, Cantilever. Don't be silly. You're clearly smarter than that. I don't want you to die. I don't know you well enough to hate you that much. I also don't want to engage in a pointless YouTube bitch fight. I have other fish to fry. I bet you do, too.

I watched your videos... "Die Hochzeit" is a lovely family remembrance. "Noble End" made me laugh out loud. I'm glad I'm not that lobster (metaphorical or otherwise). "Kemet" speaks for itself.

  • Smart enough to both deploy and detect RAW-ther subtle sarcasm, I reckon...

I'm glad you don't hate me "that much." And perchance you've revised your opinion as to my negative impact on the world's pleasantness quotient--given your complimentary remarks with respect to my "oeuvre" (which I really do appreciate, BTW).

You're a good egg, and a big man to extend the olive branch...I'll reserve the pissin' match for the insecure douche bag who initiated it--should he grow a pair...

    Respect.

  • That insecure douche bag is among my best friends on this whacky little planet. He helped save me when the love of my life was killed by a drunk driver. Hes easily among the best musicians, writers, thinkers, producers, editors, and general good guys its my privilege to know. Consider addressing his original points instead of resorting to name calling. I probably wont reply if you respond... talk to yourself if you like, make some art and have a good life.

  • OK...so you're not exactly an objective voice...

I did address his original cavil (it wasn't a point) in good faith, but he forfeited all consideration when he took the arrogant and presumptuous "get back to me when you're educated" tack.

His subsequent postings did not rehabilitate his potential as an honest interlocutor...to the contrary he undermined himself further with his hyperbole and ad hominems.

Maybe you should be giving HIM advice on how to behave, not me...

    Respect.

  • Those must've been some fancy drapes!

ABC News said Ashcroft ordered the drapes, but a D.O.J. spokesperson said Ashcroft wasn't involved in the decision. And purchasing the drapes for eight grand (instead of renting them for two grand per event) seems to make fiscal sense...especially in light of the fact that they stayed up for almost four years.

Is that the most damning "incident" during Ashcroft's tenure you can adduce? Seriously?

    Tsk tsk....

  • cantilever, the point I was making had nothing to do with the cost of the drapes, it was your suggestion that the Democrats had a problem with the Ashcroft nomination because he was "little too churchy" which was exemplified by his need to cover statues that had been in place for 70 years without controversy. Incidentally, the drapes were removed when he resigned 3 and half years later. It was as an alleged opponent to desegregation that his confirmation barely garnered enough votes in support.

  • (continued): Ashcroft's early career was as President of Central Bible College and later Valley Forge Christian College and in his 2000 bid for reelection to the Senate, he lost to a dead guy! As to your comment that he "served until 2005 without incident", you need to educate yourself, I'd rather teach my border collie the DDC. Google FISA to start with or watch C-SPAN coverage of his appearances before Congress then get back to me.

  • I'm already aware of Ashcroft's background--and why his strong Christian beliefs made him repugnant to the Democrats. (His election loss in 2000 to "a dead guy" is irrelevant, but I understand why you would add that li'l nugget.)

I watched his appearances on C-SPAN (including when Patrick Leahy had to eject some unruly protesters), and am familiar with F.I.S.A. and its implications...

But it remains telling that you led off with the draping bullshit--how did we as a nation survive THAT...?

  • "...the point I was making had nothing to do with the cost of the drapes..."

Then why did you mention the cost?

"Drapegate" occurred AFTER he had been confirmed...before then, when he was still just a nominee, it was his religious affiliation which was causing, as I already wrote, the Democrats to have their grand mal shit-fit.

(And, again, the D.O.J. spokesperson said that Ashcroft "was not involved in the decision." Do you know for a FACT otherwise?)

  • cantilever stated: "Drapegate" occurred AFTER he had been confirmed.." ahh, my point exactly! His belief in spaghetti monsters from outer-space was what determined his first act as AG. That of censorship by burkha-ing a couple of statues. Once more time for the word challenged, you first stated that he [Ashcroft] "was a little too churchy" and later you state "his strong Christian beliefs made him repugnant to the Democrats" well... which is it? A little or lotta' belief in mythical deities?

  • (continued) As to your comment, "the D.O.J. spokesperson said that Ashcroft "was not involved in the decision." Do you know for a FACT otherwise?" Need I remind you that you... yourself... stated, "ABC News said Ashcroft ordered the drapes, but a D.O.J. spokesperson said Ashcroft wasn't involved in the decision." Who gives a rat's arse who picked the color! And why are you so transfixed on the cost of the drapes?

Seriously cantilever, as a kid I had a pet hamster with more consistency.

  • And lastly... cantilever, from your obvious distain of Democrats and Republicans, I presume you are to be a conservative/libertarian (different sides of the same coin). In addition, given your remark concerning Dawn "pixie" Johnsen's "zest for fetus-killin'", one can deduce that you belong to that faction that is anti-choice. Pro-states rights and individual rights with a caveat when it comes to the womenfolk? How is that working out for you.

  • You are MUCH more adept at ad hominems, obfuscation, and pure pettifogging than in making accurate assumptions...

I'm pretty good at the latter, however, though you don't need to be the Amazing Kreskin to infer from your, uh, "words" that you are rather disingenuous, intellectually (if I MAY use that term with regard to you) dishonest, and thickly partisan (on the--lemme guess--LIB-Ruhl side)...

    (N.B.: It's spelled "disdain." With a "d.")

  • Thanks for the spell check. The hour grows late and I weary with your dance hence the slip of the finger. Obviously you have a command of the Roget's and your application as smoke and mirrors must be quite impressive to a twelve year old. Three tenets that I live by: 1) Never spit in the wind, 2) The best investment is a reliable timepiece, 3) When engaged in conversation and it has been determined that it is with one that is cohesively challenged... end the dialogue (see Tenets 1 and 2).

  • You neglected to mention your fourth tenet:

    4) When beaten, always declare victory and scurry off in order to salvage ego and not threaten dogmatic beliefs.

(That's VERY characteristic of your ilk...)

    "Thanks for the spell check."

    You're quite welcome...

  • Let me translate what you wrote: you DON'T know for a fact otherwise.

(I weep for the fate of that poor hamster...)

  • But you don't have a point...his nomination wasn't contentious BECAUSE of the drapes...it was because of his RELIGION. Drapegate came AFTER he was confirmed, and was not germane to the controversy surrounding his nomination...

You're the one who brought up the issue of the drapes...and keep harping on it. I'll ask again: Is that the worst you can adduce?

(But I appreciate you reinforcing my contention...what with your non-hyperbolic reference to "spaghetti monsters from outer-space"...)

  • Yup, I remember the Democrats having a shit-fit over Ashcroft (because he was a little too churchy), but he was confirmed as A.G. and served until 2005 without incident.

And now the Republicans will harrumph about partisan pixie Dawn Johnsen's zest for fetus-killin'...but she, too, should eventually be confirmed and serve her term...with 95% of Americans never knowing who the hell she is.

(It's nice to see that Maddow and Hayes agree on something here...I never would have foreseen THAT.)

  • cantilever states that Ashcroft "was a little too churchy". At a cost of $8,000, Ashcroft had drapes placed around two statues, the Spirit of Justice, with its one breast exposed and the bare-chested male Majesty of Law in the Great Hall of the Justice Dept. The aluminum statues were installed in the 1930's and in 2002, Ashcroft decided they were offensive. As to cantilever's statement that Ashcroft served "without incident", all I can say is someone's been living under a rock!
