  • What a treasure!! This is what the internet was meant for. Thanks.

  • Wow, this really is 111 yrs. old...veddy veddy haunting...! Great Grandma?

  • yay!! this is wonderful!

  • this really creeps me out >.< but anyway this is priceless

  • Not to sound like a pervert but is there any video back in the day that included sexual love or something like that?

  • Back then she was middle aged, so it's not wrong to consider her hawt.

  • Lol.....I wonder if this was considered HD back then XD????

Gotta love the golden oldies ^_^.

  • kouna to mwrh lola.....

  • she was born in 1883, i couldnt find when she died..

  • nah, amazing! scary, eh? no flaemin way is it that! amazing. it's came a long way & is a bit scratched is all. wow, shi knew how to dance, her. they wwere amazing!

  • Thanks Mike.

  • This young lady has probably been dead for decades, and we're seeing her as she was 112 years ago...

  • @RavenclawEspioXV

you´re right, i believe she was in her 15 in that film

  • She's beautiful.I like this video. The quality as well is very good for this time.

  • @Nicegirlwatchingyou how can u tell if she' beautiful? her face is a blur :/

  • Very interesting! Thank you! I like it!

  • This is a Ghawazee dancer - you can tell by her costume. They wore/wear knee length skirts and their belts are made of ribbons (like this one). The costume was designed to accent their movements (like when she twists and the whole skirt intensly goes along. I love the clip - thanks for sharing.

  • @LadyMorrighan That's awesome that you can tell that from her costume. But her dancing doesn't look like Gawazee to me at all. she does the Romany style of hip tucks and releases, plus all that spinning and use of the stage. Any chance they just happen to have some similar costumes? Or it's a Gawazi dancer performing Turkish style? Just doing some research.

  • Shocking for its time, yes, but some compassionate centsors, not wishing to deprive audiences completely, simply doctored the film with black stripes to blot out the offending parts of her shimmy.

  • "centsors" I meant "Censors!"

  • I bet the folks seeing this way back when were shocked and appalled !!!!

  • yes she is American but this movie is one of the oldiest movies and one of the first Turkish images ever filmed in literature(1898)and its actually silent ..the other thing is this is the oriental belly dance and there is nothing to laugh at you guys should be proud of it..absolutely marvelous

  • NoÍt's Not Turkish But You Can See That She Tried To Dance Like Turksih/Bellydance.. that is clear xx Am Turksih lol

  • Well obviously this is not the musics she danced to. May she be Ghawazee? I took a workshop where the teacher said that the Ghawazee borrowed certain moves from turkish. The pelvic tilt is the one thing looks like a Romany move.

  • Very interesting!Thank you !

  • this song is not turkish. this dance is not turkish. and this is neither an oriental music nor a bellydance. because i'm turkish.

  • Well done!Good film work!

  • I LOVE HISTORY

  • That is NOT Turkish... Hahaha , Language isn't Turkish , clothes , music sytle not Turkish...

I'm half Turk but ı know xD

  • @nave4pres2 I can confirm ;)

  • @djhuso Please confirm that to a Turk science &literrature facutly student like me.. ;)

    well.. have a nice day

  • This piece of film is absolutely priceless..

  • very nice.the capture is historical.

  • excellent job, also interesting..where did you dig this out?Because this can be an important source..

  • hmmmmm.......... yes. I wonder, but doubt it :)

  • It`s kinda funny though! ^_^ but..nice posting anyway! ~NH

  • I agree it scares!!

  • this sort of things scare me lol even though i find it rlly interesting.

  • Interesting

  • The first movie camera was invented in 1895 by the Lumiere brothers in France and at the same time Thomas Edison developed his first camera in the states. You Ignorant!

  • hahah you fail allvsmafia....please go kill yourself now

  • I dont know.. but she is wearing a hawaian necklace.. if I am seeing well. But the way she moves is like bellydance, she is doing shimmies, cammel, and another common steps.

  • Ther Library of Congress clip has no sound, where did that come from?

  • I Googled "Ella Lola" and found out that she was born in Boston on September 3, 1883..making her 15 years old when she did this. She was no stranger to vaudeville, either, as she started performing at the tender age of 11.

  • very interesting

  • Im no sure, but the dancer is not dressed in an hawavian stile?

  • That is excellent, it is fantastic to be able to view these old clips and see where our roots are!

  • There's something about viewing these century old videos that's so deeply moving.

And looking closely, the gal seems to have been quite a babe.

  • I agree that she was very attractive, but the problem is, she was only 15 at the time...ok, the BIGGER problem is, I wasn't actually born for another 77 years...

And I agree on your comment on the old films...

  • Was this actually from 1898-1900? And is that music also an original 1898-1900 recording? Or is this really a clip that was made this year, made in black and white, and made to look like an old 1890s/1900s clip with low quality sound <_<?

  • You might want to check out another YouTube Post: "Vintage Dancers - Buddha Bar, Tears Inshalla," and read the comments from the person who posted it. Clips from this "Ella Lola" performance are included.

  • It's original. I have some songs from the 1890's that are original too. You can find them if you google for it.

  • Cool!

  • This seems really redundant, but its so neat that there is actually motion picture as old as this is!

  • Grace and posture have come a long way in bellydance. Love the clip, thank you :)
