nah, amazing! scary, eh? no flaemin way is it that! amazing. it's came a long way & is a bit scratched is all. wow, shi knew how to dance, her. they wwere amazing!
This is a Ghawazee dancer - you can tell by her costume. They wore/wear knee length skirts and their belts are made of ribbons (like this one). The costume was designed to accent their movements (like when she twists and the whole skirt intensly goes along. I love the clip - thanks for sharing.
@LadyMorrighan That's awesome that you can tell that from her costume. But her dancing doesn't look like Gawazee to me at all. she does the Romany style of hip tucks and releases, plus all that spinning and use of the stage. Any chance they just happen to have some similar costumes? Or it's a Gawazi dancer performing Turkish style? Just doing some research.
Shocking for its time, yes, but some compassionate centsors, not wishing to deprive audiences completely, simply doctored the film with black stripes to blot out the offending parts of her shimmy.
yes she is American but this movie is one of the oldiest movies and one of the first Turkish images ever filmed in literature(1898)and its actually silent ..the other thing is this is the oriental belly dance and there is nothing to laugh at you guys should be proud of it..absolutely marvelous
Well obviously this is not the musics she danced to. May she be Ghawazee? I took a workshop where the teacher said that the Ghawazee borrowed certain moves from turkish. The pelvic tilt is the one thing looks like a Romany move.
The first movie camera was invented in 1895 by the Lumiere brothers in France and at the same time Thomas Edison developed his first camera in the states. You Ignorant!
I dont know.. but she is wearing a hawaian necklace.. if I am seeing well. But the way she moves is like bellydance, she is doing shimmies, cammel, and another common steps.
I Googled "Ella Lola" and found out that she was born in Boston on September 3, 1883..making her 15 years old when she did this. She was no stranger to vaudeville, either, as she started performing at the tender age of 11.
I agree that she was very attractive, but the problem is, she was only 15 at the time...ok, the BIGGER problem is, I wasn't actually born for another 77 years...
Was this actually from 1898-1900? And is that music also an original 1898-1900 recording? Or is this really a clip that was made this year, made in black and white, and made to look like an old 1890s/1900s clip with low quality sound <_<?
