fy haters , like u alwasy wear a helmet ... and when u see this mountain u just want to ride it , it's not his fault , it's just scary when u're in an avalanche , that guy need some respect =/
@TheEnoughisEnough because once buried it's largely accepted that you have just 15minutes to be found before you suffocate. and believe me, avalanche snow sets HARD and takes alot of enery to dig out. If someone is more than 2 metres, the likelihood of them being found and dug out through 2 meters of snow in under 15mins is minimal
@TopaZProductions Apparently 0_0 while I was there I saw mountains but not ones with snow on them. And this was in August, that's when I was there. Not the same year but still
@shadowblade145 your kidding right? they have great snow. check out the flick "thats it thats all" for a little test. it is great for people who live in the states because their winter is our summer and they people are beyond rad.
@crv26 Siiiiiick I want to go back there. I mustve been blanking out (im like that 90% of the time) when I was there. Any lodges that aren't full the whole season?
@shadowblade145 check out these mountains: Snowpark, Cardrona TrebleCone for park riding. You can stay in Wannaka. For free riding and shooting (video) check out Ouhoa. All of these are on the South island. You can always find places to stay, always. It is not like the US. Stay away from Mt Ruapehu. Also stay away from Coronott peak! It is an iceberg. Remarkables has some good cliffs There is a large possibility that i may have spelled a lot of these resorts incorrectly.
@TheCoop1988 and @coyotekiller4ever, this is NZ that we are talking about you must remember!! We have our winter from June till August. That is why there is heaps of snow, especially at Mount Cook, it's the highest mountain on the southern alps and in NZ.
@coyotekiller4ever higher elevations have snow.. im from oregon and it can be super nice and sunny in the lower valley but drive for a hour and a half and youre in some snow dumpin
@johnoverity Do you realize that Mother Nature took all of you in one big bite and then spit you out? You are at a distinct advantage....the spirits of the Mountain think you taste BAD and probably will not bother you much, anymore.
quite good riders-most riders would have been coverd by snow after the first few meters!! it´s not easy to escape from such a big avalanche, i´ve seen riders who were covered by much smaller avalanches
Fuckin ell Jonno you were 100 times calmer than I would have been, I wudda been cryin for me mummy. That's gotta be the most intense firsthand footage of an avalanche ever!!! By the way I saw you doin some cliffdrops on a powder day in January on Flegere under the Index chairlift.......STOMPED!!!!
@sufy1000 The average victim of an avalanche has 15 minutes before they will die from suffocation. This would be much longer if they had an avalung with them. The most important thing though is that the victim and their friends has tranceivers and avalanche probe and shovel so the victim can actually be located and dug out. Wihout these essential tools finding the victim would be like finding a needle in a haystack and keep in mind the window of topportunity is very small.
Glad you got out OK Johno. We've chatted a few times in Chamonix (Monkey in '08 or '09 was last) over the years. It was creepy watching a slide hit someone I know in passing. (doubt you'd remember me to be honest - but my memory is pretty photographic so I couldn't forget if I wanted to - haha.)
The really scary bit tho is despite the "pocket" thing, you still had a gullet full of snow. How the hell are we meant to avoid that!?
@thirteenfingers The first way to avoid it is to do an avalanche course and read some books. I am sure Johno was riding with a transceiver but anyone who doesn't is an idiot and is pretty much a coffin waiting to happen. Then your going to have to make sure your friends know how to use theirs in order to get you out.
Then get yourself an Avalung (which answers your gullet full of snow question) and preferably an ABS Bag. its expensive but as this video shows, there worth the money!!!!
@dom1080 Agreed about funeral in the making. I find it stunning how many people duck ropes with transceivers but no backpack among them. What do they plan to do? Pee on the snow to melt the victim out!? Use boards/skis? Yea - because your buddy really does have 2 hours to wait for you.
Madness ain't it.
Me and my buddy (girlfriend) spend our down days burying transceivers in rucksacks and racing eachother to find them. Loser cooks.
My best time for 2 (shallow) "victims" was sub 5 minutes.
@dom1080 As for the avalung. I've been giving it a lot of thought. (Not cheap tho.)
I see the benefits; but I asked that question more out of bewilderment.
I've known a few folks who've been slid, and each tells the same tale. "Did everything right and ended up with half a ton of snow in my throat."
Another buddy of mine rides with ABS. I'm always jealous of his pack when ropes get ducked - even the extra weight seems a small price to pay for the peace of mind that would bring.
@thirteenfingers avalung backpack is pretty cheap, i got mine for £100 (cheaper than the standalone avalung, how does that work?) and it takes a shovel and a probe inside, thinkin of getting an avalanche ball to compliment the set up.
@manxspike All I remember about Avalung prices is thinking they were an awesome idea and them being WAY out of my price range. When I did my first season about 10 or 11 years ago I got my pieps, shovel and probe on credit as I couldn't even afford that bit the normal way.
I could be tempted to get an Avalung backpack though, especially at that price. My current pack is an Element skate one so could do with one intended for winter use and the right straps on it for lugging a board.
@thirteenfingers Hmm - scratch that... I just had a look on the BlackDiamond site and as far as I can see - ALL their packs are designed only to carry skis.
Poor show there, BD. It's a good job snowboarders don't make up about 50% of people on the hill these days or you could probably be accused of living in the 80s... oh... wait.
Ah well - if they DO decide to cater to the massive number of backcountry boarders... I'll be in line to buy one.
@thirteenfingers oops i just went down to make certain, cos it was in the summer when i bought it, and realised that i modified it for vertical carry, if i get chance i will, send u picks of what i did to modify it, sorry to mislead you there, oh and its the bandit pack that i have, the smallest one.
@manxspike That makes sense. The Covert and Outlaw look like the side straps might double back to become a vertical board carrier though. Might need a couple of clips swapping over but I could live with that.
Still - I don't think I'll be getting any real snow time this year so will probably save my money for next year.
Do send those pics if you get around to it though. I'm always interested to see bodges people have done on their kit.
@thirteenfingers no worries, about the british thing, my idea of a united britain, cant be aired here! but im glad u have gaelic roots!
its gonna be hectic getting ready for the next week before our trip, but will get picks to you soon-ish ! as you are not planning a trip!
is there anyway to PM on youtube? im new to this! and also not amazing with tech, generally a hands on type of bloke! dont wanna keep spamming johno's near death experience !
@thirteenfingers yeah i couldnt believe the actual pack was cheaper than the standalone avalung, my old pack was getting very old and thought the extra money on top of the backpack price wasn't too much extra to spend.
We are off to whistler next week and doing some catboarding in the backcountry, from what i have read atm, backcountry conditions are not great out there atm, but im sure the guides know what they are doing!
We have the probe, shovel, tranciever kit, and gonna do a refresh course!
@thirteenfingers HeHe, i will take that in a good way, we usually board in europe but our group decided that we would go to whistler this year, we been planning since march, and my friend who organised it has been taking our money in installments, wich has been very cool!
yeah my mate just texted me snow is getting better for next sat!
yeah im with u on the avalung usage! i really really hope i never ever need it!
chamonix rocks, how will i cope with an orderly lift queue tho!
Haha - just be British about it (though "Manx"... hope it's not offensive calling you British - still it's all the British Isles and my Gaelic side agrees with me on that point, so maybe) and you'll be fine.
There's nothing gets disorderly like a high season queue in Chamonix. They get so bad that when the public holidays kicked in I'd stay off the hill unless it dumped.
Still - I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be... except maybe Chamonix with nobody else about. :oP
@TheB1gEd90 Nope - stupid is assuming that someone who has been snowboarding since you were still in single-figure ages hasn't weighed up the pros and cons of the helmet issue.
I've been going almost as long as Johno and don't wear a lid either. Not out of any sort of recklessness or lack of consideration... it's just the way I choose to do it.
@gardogg65 You know, I met the real guy of "127 Hours" in real life. Hes extremely nice and fun to talk to. My mom had a crush on him ;) LOL He told his story, truly amazing he is alive.
Great Vid! Glad everyone made it out unharmed! You should look into getting a Snowpulse Avalanche Airbag backpack... I will never go out without one anymore.
You are one lucky man mate... At the end when you were on camera, right after the avalanche, I totally feel you mate. I would be cussing and in shock too. You actually held your self together very well. I would have probably died from shock LOL....I'm glad you are safe!
@dubyaaaaa he has the typical new zealand accent, sounds like you need to be aquainted with the world... theres these things called languages and they all originated in different regions of the world, you should check it out
@D1ballplaya13 wikipedia. org/wiki/Johno_Verity "Johno Verity is a professional BRITISH snowboarder"... i think you need to start re-acquainting yourself with the world. :)
i'd get buried in an avalanche with this guy any day! lol. sorry, all joking aside, glad you survived. what an awesome story to tell around a fire with some beers!
I managed to dig myself out when buried, and it's tough to describe to anyone what it’s like to breath in snow. My throat and lungs felt like I'd inhaled microscopic shards of glass.
Things look different for a while after something like that.
i had a pretty scary experience last season in the canadian rockies. i was doing some wide turns with my friend dan across the top of a powder bowl when out of nowhere i sank into 4ft of snow. 5 minutes later when my friend pulled me out i realized i sank into the 4ft deep by about 20ft long cut that COULD have gave way into an avalanche but it never did.
@johnoverity You would think if god was all powerful, he could of stopped the avalanche and stopped you being in that situation. Yet he would be concerned about your language? wow god seems really petty and bitter.
"""""hey guys and girls for free element, volcom, ride, and sessions stuff go to my chanel for the url its under my website and about me thing and it really works to i have got one snowboard and alot of cloath and trucks and bearings and 6 free element boards check it out! shipings free too!"""""
It's "nice" to see the aftermath and emotion after a slide like that. You see lots of slides is ski films but you never hear the riders reaction after. It's a good learning experiance to see it like this.
Hahaha, and that would safe him in an avalanche?,there are always people, just when you see an amazing film, how some guys manage to survive this ,who have to put some very unimportant 'wise" comment!
Man, you wont believe it but i got pretty much the same experience. Your video just reminded me the hole thing. In 01/02/2010 i was climbing Villarica Vulcano in Chile when i got caught by an avalanche (i was not skiing or snowboarding). I went down 1100meters in this huge avalanche from 2800m to 1700 in a couple minutes... I got fully buried for 40 seconds but happed that a wave of snow pushed me so i could stop a few metters with my head and arms above the ice...
does them died?

@cammyammy Thanks for the comment. Yeah it's better if you go equipped.
sufy1000 1 year ago
@sufy1000 Just to back up cammyammy's post:
At 15 mins 90% of buried victims are still alive.
Transceiver, shovel & probe: The holy trinity of mountain kit - really to be seen as one item in 3 parts.
With all three a victim buried 1m deep could be out in 15 minutes.
Without the probe it takes more like 25 minutes.
With the probe but no shovel* it could be as much as 50 minutes.
Without a probe or shovel* well over an hour.
* digging with skis or snowboard.
Go equipped, but also go trained!

Still - I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be... except maybe Chamonix with nobody else about. :oP
Happy riding!

Johno, I take it you wear an Avalung now, possibly even an ABS pack? Air pocket was the right choice with kit you had...
Never been fully burried, but when they go, that adrenaline really does pumping!
Glad you made it out ok bud!
jdane17 1 year ago
how can you go backcountry skiing without a helmet?? Thats just stupid ...
TheB1gEd90 1 year ago
@TheB1gEd90 Nope - stupid is assuming that someone who has been snowboarding since you were still in single-figure ages hasn't weighed up the pros and cons of the helmet issue.
I've been going almost as long as Johno and don't wear a lid either. Not out of any sort of recklessness or lack of consideration... it's just the way I choose to do it.

You are one lucky man mate... At the end when you were on camera, right after the avalanche, I totally feel you mate. I would be cussing and in shock too. You actually held your self together very well. I would have probably died from shock LOL....I'm glad you are safe!

I managed to dig myself out when buried, and it's tough to describe to anyone what it’s like to breath in snow. My throat and lungs felt like I'd inhaled microscopic shards of glass.
Things look different for a while after something like that.
Good to see the favourable outcome here.

wow dude, im glad you survived.
i had a pretty scary experience last season in the canadian rockies. i was doing some wide turns with my friend dan across the top of a powder bowl when out of nowhere i sank into 4ft of snow. 5 minutes later when my friend pulled me out i realized i sank into the 4ft deep by about 20ft long cut that COULD have gave way into an avalanche but it never did.
seeing what you went through definately chills me

@johnoverity You would think if god was all powerful, he could of stopped the avalanche and stopped you being in that situation. Yet he would be concerned about your language? wow god seems really petty and bitter.

It's "nice" to see the aftermath and emotion after a slide like that. You see lots of slides is ski films but you never hear the riders reaction after. It's a good learning experiance to see it like this.

Exciter1000 1 year ago
Man, you wont believe it but i got pretty much the same experience. Your video just reminded me the hole thing. In 01/02/2010 i was climbing Villarica Vulcano in Chile when i got caught by an avalanche (i was not skiing or snowboarding). I went down 1100meters in this huge avalanche from 2800m to 1700 in a couple minutes... I got fully buried for 40 seconds but happed that a wave of snow pushed me so i could stop a few metters with my head and arms above the ice...
