An interesting take on this song. As soothingly comforting as it was unexpected. You're like ice cream at the right temperature and I like that. May the drunkenpianos (ironically dim?) fall into their respective crevases silently
Kathiekh great cover and don't worry about the ever floating tossers you get on youtube, they have nothing else to do than spreading bad karma around.
I would only like to say you play guitar better than me and are infinately more beautiful! lol :-) . Being a Waits fan for many years, its always difficult to grasp another style of playing.
I really enjoyed this cover. The song makes me dream. Tom Waits always makes me want to stay out all night, but this truly sounds like a lullaby. Lovely.
@sugarydonkey can i refer you to the triple album "a female tribute to Tom Waits". I would recommend listening to it before unfounded comments like yours are made.
Katie - i like your take on it. keep up the good work :)
sorry !! but this is just an insult to tom waits elaborate performance.
once you call it a drunk circus, everybody realizes you dont know what these type of tom waits songs are about. he is doing a bohemian opera style ( brecht , weill if you know who that is ). so your cover just cant do anything else than bore and fail .
it doesn't sound like a drunk circus. it sounds like an opera. the song is sung by frank the accordion player for the theatrical production of "big time" written by Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan. I get tired of people using the words "drunk" as a description. Put some more thought into it and if you cannot take criticism, don't post videos because people are going to have rude words for someone who writes dumb descriptions in their videos.
@DrunkenPiano trust me, drunk is NOT a bad connotation for me. I love using the word to describe music. Perhaps it doesn't mean the same thing to both of us.
@katiekh I dont like either of you! it takes all kinds and its a big world and we can do what we want! but that piano point was good keep playin snobs suckle!

,,,tom's version is the one with life experience-has nothing to do with drunk circus....you'll realize that within years. @katiekh They can. But they have to break the song apart and reassemble it. They can't pretend to be Tom Waits, but they can be themselves. But to be fair, anybody covering Tom Waits has to operate the same way. There are a couple ladies on YouTube who covered Fish & Bird pretty well. Rickie Lee Jones covered Rainbow Sleeves very well.
I don't know...My mom is mourning her best girlfriend who just died. They've been friends since 1946. Drunken circus? Yeah, sometimes, but for the most part, it's a song of deep longing and deep deep sorrow, remembering perhaps 63 yrs of dreaming & laughing & crying & remembering together.
@canakin216 lol maybe I'm drunk... but how is anyone supposed to take that? I can't tell if its a complement to either tom or her or an attack lol. cause it sounds like you're saying brutality of tom like its a bad thing, but I love it. And you call her cute in quotations as if implying she's not and then call her a cunt. sounds kinda dickish to me, but it made me laugh. Like I said though... I'm drunk. So fuck what I think
It's really not an innocent song, nor should it be sung cutesy. Singing out of key doesn't help much either. Please leave Tom Waits songs along until you understand the heart of them. This is a song about a tortured soul, not someone skipping through the lillies. You also ought not to change her to his.
a few discouraging comments here... please don't be discouraged - i hear a promising voice. my advice (not that i think you need it) would be to listen closely to your source. keep up the good work x
"We swore we'd be together until the day we died" ... "I made a golden promise ... I gave my love a locket ... and then I broke her heart" ... does that seem "cute" to you ? Please put some guts into your singing ... For Tom's sake ;)
