  • Same can be said about 'The Blues' & IRS sounded worse on the record

  • @gnr331 Especially the blues and I love that song

  • Just imagine if all the songs from chinese demo were of this quality, it would have been way better.

  • i forgot this was brian may's solo, but this is ten times better a guitar part than what ended up being on the final record

too much garbage shredding doesnt fit the song at all

  • brian supports and enriches the melodic beauty, coexisting with the main melody, axl & rhythmic.

  • this is the best song on Chinese Democracy

  • this is great!!!! like the studio song!!

  • i didnt really like the new album when i first heard it. then it really grows on you, it feels like it could be use your illusion 3. now i cant seem to get some of these songs out of my head. i guess thats how you know its axl, when you cant stop singing it, trying to sound like him

  • @CADILLACTATE thats so true

  • This version was almost perfect. No clue wtf they did in the release version, but it's horrible. Somewhere in the transition, the "haunting" sound of this original was lost, especially during the main part of the song from about 1:50 to about 2:20.

Even the intro sounds better in this version.

Why not remove the new version from youtube? It's a fcking catastroph to my ears.

  • @hospitalbedpan1 they had all the chinese songs done by 2000.every thing they did in more then 8 years was just fuck them up

  • i really like this song, ruined it on the album, real shame, it would make a nice acoustic song

  • @robriani most of the songs would. the problem is the over-prduction.

  • Axl did keep the GUNS N ROSES NAME ALIVE, but still its like AXL and his Hired Members, they dont have the chemistry like the old band, the band "GNR" got famous cause of the old band, now its like AXL is the main owner and he kicks out people and re records tracks with new members.

  • this is better than the album one

  • i love this song

  • Great track, I still prefer this to the " finished" version.

  • fuckin love it, man

  • beautiful!!!!

  • I shot John Lennon

  • @Darkit2099 You bastard!

  • john lennon.

  • Did Brian May play the guitar solo??? I did not know!

  • Axl destroyed our band.

  • @jtdurden his band

  • This is a purer version than the album one. It captures the essence of the song. The final version is also great, but this is really tremendous....

  • GUN 'n' ROSES were good.... then everyone in the band left ...... except for axl.... now the band is gay

    R.I.P GUN 'n' ROSES

  • @2244azza Dizzy's still in it

  • @2244azza what? That's shit, the new guns n roses still kicks ass! You're just butt hurt

  • @Darkit2099

    Haha!

  • This is better than the original. although the vocals sound the same as they do as the album version.

  • this version is better than album song

  • i think this isnt the original, the drums are different

  • @Mutahnt and synth in 2:04

  • if im honest brain's solo sounds quite the common one robins was more ear catching and reffreshingly different my opinion

  • so amazing gives me goose bumps . i dint like this album at first but it grows on u .

  • this is better than the cd one

  • great guitar solo

    way better than album version

  • WTF IS THIS!

  • The official release is a better master. But they ruined the mix. Taking out Brian May's parts was a dumb move. I will always consider this version the "official". May's undying sustain and melodic licks can't be beat. Slash was overrated and much of his sound relied on production. May could play through an AM radio and sound great.

  • @filmmakingjoe See I disagree with Slash's sound requiring lots of production. I've listened to him play live and it sounded great. All the studio really ever did was just clean up the recording itself. May and Slash are both great guitarists, though.

  • @filmmakingjoe this is awsum but it sounds wierd with out the guitar riff during the part that goes"on an ordinary day not in an ordinary way etc). And its ruined by the early fade out

  • That solo in this Demo, is just magic to your ears, why the hell would Axl dump Brian May off of the album? Don't get me wrong, Axl's one of my favourite singers and musicians of all time, but that really annoys me, that he took out one of the greatest parts of this song :(

  • @GenericEnigma I get the feeling that Axl is not an easy person to live with. He couldn't make it work with Erin Everly or Stephanie Seymour (nasty lawsuits and all) or Slash. Why would have be able to make it work with Brian May? Oh Axl... love you so much but take it easy a bit sometimes huh?

  • it worth to wait for this cd its incredible, gnr , is perfect

  • this sounds very similar 2 the chidem version only slower. of course the solo's also different and so is the piano. but the vocals sound the same.

  • Chinese Democracy is the best album of the 21st Century.

Guns N' Roses (old + new) are the greatest band ever.

    Full Stop.

  • @Lukith66 Get real its an over produced piece of shit

  • @dirmo77

Actually, no it's not. Overproduced, maybe. Shit, no. It's simply not what people were expecting. Is it Guns N' Roses? Not in the slightest. However, it's still a good album. I guarantee you that if Axl released this as a solo album it would have been so much more well-received.

  • @Atoutlem0nde You don't think it's Gunners? I'm surprised how much some of the songs (esp the mainstream like IRS and Better) DO sound like GNR

  • @SharnsiR Well, the way I see it is like this. Take a baseball team for example. This team has loads of power-hitters, so they win games by creating lots of runs. However, one year they trade all of their run-scorers for players who are better defensively. They may not score as many runs anymore, but they still win games because they don't allow the other team to get as many. They're still the same team, they've just changed their style of play. Essentially, that's what Guns N' Roses has done.

  • @Atoutlem0nde I agree with that. The style has changed but Axl's band is still hitting goals imo!

  • @SharnsiR They've traded away their straightforward, energetic sound for a more industrial, modern sound. I agree, some of the songs definitely do sound like GNR. I could see Better and IRS on UYI1, the title track on AFD, and perhaps Catcher in the Rye and This I Love on UYI2. Honestly though, there's not a whole lot of energy on Chinese Democracy, compared to Appetite for Destruction. The only real energetic songs on this CD I hear, are Better and Riad n' the Bedouins.

  • @Atoutlem0nde I agree with that too. In fact, I think that was what caused the split originally. As early as Use Your Illusion II, Axl and Slash were arguing about whether to stick with their classic style or to move onto more progressive rock in line with the times. They both had a point. The old style was unique enough to endure imo but people like Kylie Minogue and Madonna have kept their success by changing their sound to move with the times. Take 'My World', Axl was experimenting with that.

  • @SharnsiR I certainly hear a lot of emotion though. Especially on This I Love, Madagascar, and Sorry. So it's kind of a trade off.

  • @Atoutlem0nde Again I agree. I'm surprised at how emotional and even romantic Axl is with this album. It's another side to him that we're finally seeing or else he's mellowed with age. I really like that.

  • @SharnsiR Exactly. Like I said before, it's not what people were expecting. Hell, I don't even know what I was expecting this album to be like. Either way, it's a great album, whether it gets the credit it deserves or not. Could it have been better? I would think so. Axl had a decade and a half, for God's sake. After that long, I would almost expect perfection. But it's good enough for me, and apparently for Axl as well, otherwise he wouldn't have released it yet.

  • @Lukith66 I agree but only because I've spend so many years obsessed over Axl that I can't stop now. (2/3 of my life LOL)

  • @SharnsiR :L yeah im a huge axl fan too, he is a musical genius. this song proves it

  • Who the fuck disliked this?

  • To me it's hard to choose ! This one and the one on the album both sound fantastic. The Incrediable W. Axl Rose ! I'm sure this song relates to alot of people and I'm one of them !

  • i love axl but his vioce is waayyyyyyyyyyy different. and i wish he was still with slash :(

  • not bad

  • Even though i prefer slash Brian May of Queen wouldve made a nice replacement, just about as good. What wouldve been awsum is if they worked with Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton or Tom Morello. I think Tom wouldve been the best bcuz he can sound just like Slash

  • I've always thought the may version felt bare.I much prefer Bumbles.Either way,Both solos are better than anything off slashs album, imo

  • @JohnBurninate Actually u got admit By the sword is a good song. Weather u hate slash or not it is good.

  • @diablo9333 Ehh,I strongly disagree.I felt By The Sword was a very weak track. The only song that even kindas sticks out is BD

  • This version is better than the final one on the album

  • i never considered the new lineup to be this good and i was stupid for that, this is a great album, still prefer the old lineup tho lol

  • @person340 same here.

  • anyone know why they changed the solo in the end?

  • because Brian May didn't agree with the way Axl disected and re-arranged the parts he played... His actual solo was nowhere near what we're hearing here so creative differences led to change ups. =)

  • @maleficus333 Axl says he felt Brian May's solo didn't match the style he was trying to obtain for this album. They edit it a bit, but that made Brian sad. So they got Bumblefoot to do the solo instead :)

  • @maleficus333 They changed because they felt it wasn't the right style. Brian May played the solo in his style. Then they added wah wah and stuff and Brian May didn't like it so they got Bumblefoot to play it

  • somehow, this song reminds me of The LOvely Bones

  • BRIAN MAY!!!!!!!!!!

  • The outro to this song just doesn't sound right without Bumblefoot playing back and forth with Axls vocals

  • better than the album version, this is hard to find tho

  • Comment removed

  • if people wouldn't know that that was Brian May they'd bitch and whine about the lack of Slash

  • @thepeter

I agree with you. If people were told Slash played on this album they would call it genius...

  • Sad but true. I mainly care about if Axl is any good, all other members of the band can be replaced sadly.

  • @thepeter Brian may from Queen

  • this and TWAT were way better on the leaked version, the ones on chinese democracy were just molested to death by computer effects and absurd distortion

  • This is a real good song from Chinese Democracy and also from their old album...I really like the solo of this version, and the real song is much better then this demo. In my opinion, old the old songs they covered in Chinese Democracy are much better...My favourite songs of Chinese Democracy are the Single Chinese Democracy; Scraped; I.R.S (Cover of the old); Madagascar; Prostitute...I actually like all of the new songs, but in some, there are to much special effects...

  • He has a fucking point men, do your own stuff, no playing genius.

  • The Brian May version is really better suited for this song. It sounds more poignant and dignified, like a classic rocker. Very Queens-esque, how can you not love this song?

  • Shacklers Revenge and Madagascar. DO YOU KNOW THEM!?!

  • @SkUmDiCtAtOr You have no fucking clue what you're talking about. This is from '99, BM confirmed that. As did the early TWAT and IRS demos. This is not debatable, it's a fact.

  • Where can I find the mp3 version for this!?

  • @tjy89 get a two male end microphone chord plug the headphone side in then plug the other into the microphone n record it with any free recording program thats how i get any music i want without having to pay

  • Goddamn that must sound horrible.

  • @mrbradeliiii actually no its the exact same quality i dont pay for music i just find a good sample usually what the band posts on myspace or whatever it comes out perfect im also using a moble usb pre amp to plug back into the mic

  • jesus just download it as a torrent :S they are all great quality... 320 kbs

  • @SkUmDiCtAtOr Or you could do something a heck of a lot simpler and just learn how to use peer to peer (Bittorrent, Gnutella, Usenet etc.).

  • u get to many viruses from peer to peer especially with bigger more popular bands like gnr who the hell nos what ur downloading, i have good recording software so getting it this way is not a problem at all

  • @SkUmDiCtAtOr Not if you're smart. Just don't download executable files from networks such as Gnutella unless you HAVE to, and you'll be fine.

Also: I've been using Bittorrent for years to get music, and surprise surprise, I've not gotten one virus from it in that time.

  • ya torrent are fucking sweet arnt they?

  • I really like this song... i didn't listen to the other version tho

  • I have this old version and love it. The new version completely sucks.

  • Best version no contest! The album version is too cluttered, wish this was the version that was on the album!

  • Axl Rose interview:

"1st off obviously I knew people liked the song but the Brian appreciation really only showed up in force publicly after we had moved on in Guns. In fact Not many seemed to care and most comments were aimed at why Slash in their opinions should be here.

Brian's solo itself is a personal fave of mine and I really couldnt understand as hes such a rock legend why it wasnt openly appreciated more at the time.

  • In actuality all that feel and emotion referred to now had a lot to do with Sean and I and the parts I chose out of Brians different runs, versions, practice runs etc to make sure we had those elements in one version. Its entirely constructed from edits based around one specific note Brian hit in a throw away take. And though Brian seems to have warmed a bit to it at least publicly he was unfortunately none to pleased at the time with our handiwork.

  • I remember looking at Brian standing to my left and him staring at the big studio speakers a bit aghast saying But thats not what I played.

Sean Beavan and I were not in any way tring to mess with Brian we just did what we do and then try and do our best to stand up for our decisions."

ALSO, for anyone interested, I have a fixed version of this demo with the blip over the "comfort from someone" line much less disruptive

  • I agree I rekon this version is better, most leaked versions of the songs were better than the album release, especially There Was A Time, in the album released they just screwed it with computer shit, it was fine but they wanted it better. Anyway GNR are fuckin sweet

  • my crazy english teacher, who is a radical guns'n roses fan, made us do a project on this song in relation to the book "The Catcher in the Rye", and thats what has sorta got me intrested in them now. They get more addictively awsome the more u listen 2 them

  • Weird, I though the song was about arc Chapman

  • How can you say this version is way better when it sounds exactly the same?

  • umm me gusta mas la version el album [erp las dos son chilas

  • OK. Bueno.

  • beautiful song

  • I think the album version is better...but hey! I love this version too...has a different character to it. Agree with Ecwfan, Chinese Democracy is a fucking awesome beyond words album. Axl's brilliant!

  • This version >>>> Album version.

The album version sounds slow and distorted. Only partof the album version I like better is the middle.

  • plays brian may on this demo??.... i didn't hear the guitar solo

  • One of my favourite songs ;)

  • beautiful song

  • this version is good the album version is just so much more professional and has a stronger feel to it.

axl's vocals don't sound as good here, although i think i prefer the drums here!

  • wakefeild, i respect your opinion here but i've compared the two versions of this song...album and demo...and to me the album version sounds muffled, especially axl's voice. The demo, to me, sounds clearer and more pure...Not sure if that makes any sense.

  • i cant believe people dont like this! most people anyway.

  • I love this demo. I wish Rose had never touched up "Catcher in the Rye" and left it to fade out as we see. Great song. Chinese Democracy is still a fucking awesome album. And in a few years more will agree as the album gets wide released.

  • totally agree

  • there is actually a demo of this demo. i think that is the best. ha.

  • i think the demo is better than the cd version although i didnt c that much of a difference to b honest

  • you're half right. that is the demo version with brian may.

but the album version is much stronger. the stronger vocal arrangement combined with the amazing solo on the album version blow this one out of the water

  • any version... this song is amazing. Axl has that gift to connect with people, this song tells me so much about my life and he doesnt even know me.

  • so true.

  • When all is said and done, this version is definitely better, it flows smoother, sounds cleaner, and sounds classic.

  • NICE Play on words

  • i love both versions but this is a little better than the final version

  • It's funny this shit is all about my ex. i love her to death she is really my heart i love you PURA!!!

  • This is the best version

  • yeah, maybe your partially right but it would be a stretch to say you're 100% right. go to the guns n roses home page and read some of axl's viewpoints on what happened with the band. i quickly realized that it wasn't all axl's fault and that slash and the others are just as much to blame.

  • thats not true. robin finck hasnt said a single word about "not being able to take Axl's attitude". he was originally with Nine Inch Nails and just happened to return to that band.

axl has said nothing that indicates he thinks he was superior to anybody. slash quit in 96 and he says in his book that for 2 years axl kept trying to get him to come back. axl called slash's father, wife, even security guard to convince them that slash shouldnt leave GNR.

how is that "driving everybody out"?

  • haha, brilliant

  • Axl's an idiot for dropping Brian May's solo (no offense to any Axl fans)

  • He wasn't allowed to keep it on the record, although I agree, Bumblefoot's replacement solo for it is off the wall, absoloutely incredible.

  • Hea I can not pick over appetite and this. Then it was fresh rock breaking thru the glam bands and was gold.

This just freaking rocks cuz it has been so long for new material and god dam I missed axl's voice. He put together some killer stuff for this album and I pray for more to come ! This album would have shattered records if it was promoted like hell and the line up was together for a tour. Why songs from this masterpice are not on air radio 24x7 is amazing simply amazing.

  • "This album would have shattered records if it was promoted like hell ".......agreed Jack!!!!!!!, awesome CD

  • Sure, this isn't the old GNR. I think everyone remembers getting their first taste of the music. (kinda like NIN) Those moments will always leave a deeper fondness in your heart. Me personally...Love the voice of Axl, loved Slash on guitar, etc....BUT...This is just another chapter...Things change and I'm sure there's more of that to come. Enjoy ; )

  • How many peopel out there think Chinese Democracy is just as good as Appetite for Destruction???????????

  • its not qutie as good as appetite but i still like the new gnr.

  • i like the new GNR album simply because it sounds so damn different than their past stuff. Honestly, I'm addicted to it.

  • i can't take it outta the car...f'ing love it too

  • I think it's a great album. It's refreshing to hear a different sound from Axl and the awesome new band he lined up. If Slash and the old crew were still their it would have just been Use Your Illusion III.

  • I still am convinced the original lineup(Izzy,Axl,Slash,Duff and Steven) is better

  • i am convinced you are right, but i am also convinced that Chinese Democracy is a pretty good album too, all things considered.

  • gnr is very good

    great synths too

GNR best rockband ever and again a great album. It is miles better than 'Velvet Knife.'

  • This one is more crisp. The other is more haunting.

  • no what sucks is your pathetic wigger typing, "shit da whole cd sux"?

  • no.

    the album version is better.

  • This sounds alot like "Axl Rose" by Def Karaoke Jam.

  • i love this song. the album is 5* thank you axl

  • I think that for the most part, we all agree: the leaked versions (whether they are from 99, 03, 04, 06...who gives a flyin' f#ck anyway??) are superior to the final ones...to different degrees, of course, depending of the song... but out of 11 songs leaked before the release, I'd say that only 1 (all right, maybe 2) actually improved...this one's among the ones that didn't, but with a little luck, within a year or so they'll re-release the album with extra tracks, maybe the original demos?

  • This version of the song is better than the album version, also the 2006 version of TWAT is better than whats on the album too.

  • I remember a few years back when Axl was debating whether or not to release this song on Chinese Democracy. We begged him to do it. The demo back then was great.

If I knew this was the version he planned to release, I would have told him to NOT put it on the album. It's slow, distorted, and doesn't sound as epic for some reason.

Anyway, here's to Axl ruining another good song. Maybe in a few years another artist can remake this song for the better.

  • lol your comment makes no sense!!! maybe its me bein stupid but im pretty sure ull find that this is the demo and not the final album version! have you heard the released version???? how did he ruin another good song haha he WROTE another good song if thats what you mean????

    many regards, Dick Van Dyker

  • if your lookin for epic just listen to sorry or there was a time those are probably some of the best songs he has ever written catchers more of a slow song because its got a slow meaning to it its got a great beat

  • Slow meaning?

  • Ye im kinda sayin that as a metaphor type thing lol wat i meant was its got a sadder meaning and isnt as fast and harsh as some others.

  • honestly the album version is better

  • Oh all the demos, I greatly prefer the demo version of Catcher over the one on Democracy.

  • this isnt the best video on here for this song at all

    othersounds better

but the new album is very good

nothing is as good as the original ever but its pretty dam close

  • Perfect.

  • this solo is better especially the outro

  • I preffered this version, there is too much going on the final version on Chinese Democracy. Shame because this song was perfect as it was. And they've removed Brian May's solo! I'm not pissed off because I'm a fan of Brian May, only that it was the better solo.

  • I agree with you. I loved the new song up to about 4.:18 where you basically can't even hear the lyrics over all the stuff mixed in. I still like the song, but I feel they did too much towards the end. As far as the solos, they both work, but I feel the slower solo is more haunting. It just goes works better, although the new one has grown on me.

  • Dude, I hate to break to ya' but... This is not the original demo, this is the 2003 demo. The original demo was recorded in 1999 or so, so I suggest you change the name or people will start flaming you for this. If you wanna hear Chinese Democracy early demos, check my two vids, There Was A Time from 1996 and I.R.S. from 1995. Great vid, still. 5 stars. =)

  • youve been told like ten times that those are the 99 demos stop advertising them falsly and as for it being the original demo he clearly means the original leak.

  • the vocals on the new version kill this demo. also, all the guitars and the general production are superior. if brian may hadnt played on this demo, no-one would like it better

  • I can hear alot of differences in the two versions. this one is really cool. its definately more of a rock tune with the percussion. the cd version is musical art though. hmmm i think i like the vocals on the cd version better, and the percussion better on this version.

  • i agree the solo is better on here, but cmon guys, other than that is it really any different? no

  • the intro is substantially different
