Hey ALTUS I love your attempts at riding challenging terrain on the HPN its part of the achievement to tame the beast - and some of this hill climb is a challenge got to give you that. Like you say when you have done it its memorable Excellent.!!
I took my DRZ from Wisconsin to Alaska, riding 11K miles in 16 days. I took all my camping gear, cooking utensils, clothing, tools to fix it, and more. The bike will not do more than 80 mph with all that weight, but it got me to Prudhoe bay and back. I saw a couple of guys on GS's that did not go beyond the artic circle because their adventure GS's were too big. The larger bikes are comfortable, but for real adventure off road nothing beats the DRZ400.
This is the reason you do not use these tanks for an adventure like this. Next time take a DRZ400s and you could have been going up and down that hill 10 times in the time it took you to go up once on those monsters. Or may be you just need to learn how to ride.
@kingklr1 Oh and you are welcome to bring your DRZ. Just remember you will also need gear for a 10 day trip camping mostly in places with no campsites or facilities. You also won't find any restaurants so make sure you bring enough food and that you can carry enough fuel for at least a 300 km range.
@kingklr1 Call me a sadist but I like riding a "tank" through difficult terrain. I have tried my hand at riding smaller "plastic" bikes like the DRZ but find it boring. I want to be scared by the bike. It might have taken us a very long time to get up this mountain but it was very memorable. Riding a big bike in extreme terrain forces you to be a gentleman.

Well, we took GS's above the Arctic Circle in 2009. One of our friends took his R1200RS, too. Then there was the guy on the ZRX14 on street tires.
It probably would have been easier on smaller bikes, but dont think it matters the bike, just the rider and the ride.
Oh, we also took 3 GS's and one KTM 950 on the White Rim Trail summer of 2010. Not sure i would do it again, but we did it :)
