If you get a tripod, don't bother with a cheap plastic one,--they're not worth it; you'll just keep buying them because they'll keep breaking!
Some other hints, if you don't have a tripod, hold your elbows into your chest, and hold your breathe when taking a picture. You may want to keep your finger on the button until the picture has been taken to avoid shaking it more. You can also rest your camera on something sturdy nearby.
I think he would be able to produce a better product if he had a better workstation. The new i7 iMac would suffice :D

I'm going into graphic design (college right now), but I'm having some difficulty with taking stable photos. Any advice?

A tripod would help you take more stable photos. Or are you talking about taking photos in horse stables? Either way, I think a tripod would help.
