I was in the US Navy as a submariner and this sounds very likely to happen. It is the attitude that we are the superiors of the sea which results in some really dumb decisions. I remember one instance where a submarine was submerged near a boat pulling a barge. Rather than diverging its course, the crew went right under it and snagged the cable linking the boat to its barge. The cable ripped a gash through the sail of the submarine. The company of the barge sued the US Navy and won.
