  • Wow, the actors really had to work to make their way up onto the stage back then. Nice to see Miss Martin receive the award from "Scarecrow" Ray Bolger.

  • Absolutely delightful thank you so much. For years I have been trying to find Parkinsons interview with her.

  • Who was the lady Miss Martin was seated next to at the beginning after Ray Bolger announced her name ? Janet Gaynor ?

  • you should give this to a museum

  • bahahahha all i can think of is PETER PAN :) that movie WAS my childhood.

  • Do you have the portion were Maureen Stapleton was nominated for Toys In the Attic? If so, could you post. THANK YOU!

  • 1- she's 46 here. Julie was 29 when she did it.

2- I'm amazed she got through the audience with a hoop skirt

3- I'm so glad she talks to the students. the lyrics of Climb Every Mountain are wonderful for EVERY profession or passion.

  • i love her!!!

  • I saw Gypsy and The Sound of Music in the summer of 1960 as a teenager. Thanks for posting the clip of Mary winning the Tony. I know very little about fashion, but Mary Martin (on TV a lot over the years) must have had the highest bills from dress designers of anyone in show business.

  • You have to love Miss Martin!!

  • Having copies of things like this is good for preservation and archives and academics.

  • Can you posy when they read the other people nominated? Ethel Merman & Carol Burnett. Thank you.

  • Does this awards ceremony show any of the other cast members who were nominated, such as the original seven kids or Patricia Neway? I know there was some awkward way the kids were nominated. I believe as a group as best supporting actress.

This show and its cast have existed only on an old cast album and in my memory until the internet came along. This clip and your lovely tribute bring back wonderful memories of seeing this show as a child with my family. Thanks so much.

  • do you have any other footage from this ceremony?

  • Hi I have the entire show. Was there another clip you would like to see? Unfortunately there were no musical numbers performed on the show.

  • @ashtonjoliet lol well the whole show would be nice if its not too much trouble ;)

  • @ashtonjoliet

Would you be able to post the portion of the show that includes the presentation of the best actress category, which would include Maureen Stapleton for Toys in the Attic....thanks.

  • wow was the tony award just a medal in a case back then?

  • I have the 33rpm recording of this show.

  • Does she WORK that dress or what?

  • Those two young girls sitting at the table in the background right after Mary comes on stage (they must have been there to help with the awards)---the one on the left looks like Lauri Peters.

  • Forget the movie, the play is the real deal.

  • Thanks for all the kind comments. Glad you liked this clip!

  • That DRESS! As graceful as Mary is gracious. Wonderful.

  • Our wonderful, dear Mary...how wonderful to see this and hear her gracious words.

  • This was amazing to see. I had no idea this existed. Do you have the beginning of this video listing the other nominees? One nominee of course was the great Ethel Merman for Gypsy? Thank you so much.

  • This is a wonderful glimpse of the great Mary Martin during the Sound of Music era. It's too bad that she never, to my knowledge, performed a number from this musical on television during the run of the show. What a great show business lady! Thank you for finding this very rare clip.

  • Hi sad to say they did not perform songs from those shows back then! I would also love to see the OBC of Sound of Music. Mary and the SOM kids did sing "Do Re Mi" on a tv variety show in 1959 or 1960 and I have never been able to see it. I would love to see it. Glad you liked this clip.

  • Actually, I once saw a clip of a replacement Maria (I think it was Nancy Dussault) and children from the run performing Do-Re-Mi on a TV show. The clip is not online any more, unfortunately. I wonder if Mary and the original kids ever did it too.

  • Oh, this is so neat! Thanks for posting. Did they perform songs from the show at the Tonys back then? I'd simply love to see the OBC of The Sound of Music in action.
