Its funny that at 1:00 they show this song as an apparent B side to My Love; but I think is one of the better songs that she did musically, I like how it progresses and builds.
This hit by Petula Clark was the 75th #1 song on Billboard's newly formed chart that is now known as the Adult Contemporary charts. It also hit #9 on the Top 40 charts and #6 in the United Kingdom. It also charted in other countries as well.
The first time I heard this song, it was on Wife Swap when the wives were reunited with their former families at the end of each show. This music is 100 times better than the crap that is spewed out in today's music. Just look at the top 10 songs at the Billboard 100 right now. How many of the songs can you actually relate to real music? Probably no more than 1 or 2.
i am having memory problems from a car accident....and this really takes me back...i remember my oldest brother having these kinds of songs when i was like 5..and i love it!! thanks!!
perhaps my fav by pet. she has so many other great ones it is hard to make the ultimate choice. such a great vocalists from a greater musical era than today (2011)
@loydkoh826 I've just listened to the orchestration for the first time. You're right, it's fantastic. I've only listened to the melody for all these years, cos Pet's voice is just blinding, especially on this number!!
@txncgirl1 I tend to think this song came out in the Autumn of 1966, as far as listening to it on the radio as a hit single. I'm speaking in terms of it being a hit in the USA.
1966/1967 were such changing years in our world, I remember it very well, I was 15 in 67' and remember Petula's tunes all over the AM dial airwaves. I had many of her 45's and albums. The 60's to me were sweet and easy going, no cell phones, no computers, no I pods and NO gadgets, just gas that cost 45 cents a gallon(premium) a girlfriend, my Dad's 66 Grand Prix, as long a I was a good boy and stayed out of trouble, did my homework and went to confession once a Month
Dave here. Found it interesting that this video starts with the picture of an old, Phila. Suburban pair of trolley cars. As a grade-school kid, I was fascinated by the variety of styles of trolleys the Red Arrow Line had back in the '40's & '50's. (4, actually.) The two-tone paint job started about '49, or '50, when they added new, more streamlined cars with the inward-sloping windshields. A short length of track extends up W. Chester Pike to Keystone Ave., ending w/a bumper.
“I didn’t like you much when I first meet you”…what a great line to use in a love song! They should have followed with, “Than I seen your paycheck stub”…Then, “I couldn’t live without your love (cash)” LOL… Kidding here, great song!
Couldn't agree more log05mus---I used to do the same thing in Ogden, UT. All kinds of cool stores and places to eat. All gone in the name of progress and big box stores--yech!!!!
What memories this Lady brings back to me when I was 10, and that Christmas....Downtown and this song were the hits....Downtown WHEELING< WV...we loved to go there and all the shops and theatres and good food....what a wonderful era and the G.C.Murphy record dept....I will always cherish her songs that take me back to that TIME, it was GOOD to have grown up in the sixties and late fifties....A truly different world than today....so many things have dissapeared, for progress...HUH !!!!
A true classic by Hatch & Clark. "I know a place" is my all time fave by Petula, but this is the second. Thanks for a great post! This lady is gold! Was a great time to be a teenager back in the 60's.............................
Great song! Unlike MOST pop/rock artists of the mid-1960s, she was QUITE a bit older (by ten years) than most of them, yet watching her swing her hips to "Sign of the Times" and saying "yeah..." in her songs (her producer HATED that, but it became rather a trademark of Pet), show she could rock with the best of them... (Of course, TODAY being a whole - gasp - 34 years old is nothing, but back then, it was fairly rare...)
Dave here. Interesting choice of pictures. Especially the old Phila. Suburban's Red Arrow trolleys. I guess these were in the 60s. Was fascinated by them in the 40s. Used to sit on the corner of W. Chester Pike & Kenmore Rd. as a kid & watch them go by. That particular model made a grinding sound when it accelorated. It was old in the '40s. They had 3 other models including 1 or 2 Brill more streamlined cars. Frank, a motorman ret'd in Daytona, did 90 mph one night in the newest model.

In my estimation ... it is the best of Ms Petula Clark and the musical orchestration of Tony Hatch ... though commercially and historically ... Downtown will always be her #1 song ... how many HS bands learned Downtown in 1965 and then Theme from Hawaii 5-0 in 1968 ? Great times and the best decade for music ever .. 1960's ...

My deepest dreams probably prefer rather jazzier, musical yesterdays, waltz yodels, louder yodels, younger generation teenage 'pop'.
This aging, 60's swinger is trying and failing to convey, by using 'cool', 'hip' modern day terms and expressions something that means some thing to some body. I'll revert to the Queen's English! Pet's my pet, of many decades! 1960 > 2010 a changed world? Is it possible to feel the same appreciation half a century on? The simple answer is................Yes!

Since I lived in London from 1966 till 1975 prior to moving to the states, where I met my beloved wife who passed away recently, listening to this particular song and also YOU and I, makes me cry even more, so many memories that I shared with my wife of over 30 years,I wish she was with me now listening to PC...Miss and Love you Honey...
Petula ranks first in the Pantheon of Vocal Goddesses. Truly 'she shivers me timbers' everytime I hear her voice. My great hope and expecctation she will be serenading us on the other side of the veil.........
I was abt 14 yo when this came out and I really loved it. I would sing along when it came on the radio. My parakeet would always chirp in every time he heard it too whether I sang along or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he had good taste
Such a great song and such great production. So much credit should go to her main song writer, arranger and producer of that period Tony Hatch, they had a wonderful ride together and left a legacy of about 6 of 7 major hits.
It is out there a more modern version of this wonderful song ??? Maybe by another artist that was a huge hit in the radio back in late 60 's early 70's and I would love to listen again
I used to live near the Phila. Transit Co., Red Arrow line, near West Chester Pike, Highland Park, Upper Darby, PA ca. 1950. Dave F. Was fascinated by the trains & trolleys back then at age 11. They had a car they called "The Bullet" that ran between Upper Darby and Norristown. Could do 90 mph. Ran off tracks early on.
here is a song that if you can imagine for a moment what the people of the time were doing in their spare time, work and politics compared to now. What was love all about back then, when people listened to songs like these were they thinking of crime? commiting suicide? or wanting drugs to get off. I was born in the early 60's but too young to understand life then but I know about life now and it sucks, too much war, hate and political correctness. Those who lived the 60's were lucky.
Love it, love it, love it ... just beautiful, tender and poignant. And maleficentdiva, keep on singing, and don't let anyone put you off or shut you up. If you want to sing Petula-esque songs, don't be stopped by so-called "fashion". As for me, I look forward to seeing Pet in Adelaide 1 October 2010!!

@manc33 I dont know about you but I really dont care what others may say about my tastes in music, there are some altime great performers that come from a bygone era, I enjoy Petula Clark and her music, she has lasted the last 50 or so years and sounds just as great today as she did back in the sixties.
To the creator of this wonderful video, please tell me where the photograph of the kids in the snow was taken? It brings back so many memories of my childhood in New York City. I remember the absolute joy I would feel whenever I looked out the window and saw the streets paved with snow! I see that same glee in those kids faces. My mother would go out with a camera & take pictures of my brother & myself playing in the snow. Thanks for the wonderful collage! It has brought back many memories!
Great song by a great artist. One of the classic songs and performers of the 60s. What a trifecta, Pet, Dusty and Cilla. Sadly Dusty is no longer with us but they all live on with their music.
Along with the bogus, untalented crap ,depressingly, came a lot of ugly, empty b.s behavior and a total trashing out of one of the greatest things in life...men and women gracefully doing the mysterious dance of true relationships. Hate these times.
@mpmcmullan It's Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Angels played there when they were a minor league team. It was torn down in the 60's and is now Gilbert Lindsay Park.
miss clark you made the cake with all the other wonderful songs you recorded but this one is the icying on the cake! No 1 all the way! A plus video thank you for sharing!
What great memories the pictures bring back. This was a beautiful song and a truly talented LADY. No need to resort to cheap antics or shock the audience as with the likes of Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears et al...
From the opening notes on the piano to the final trumpet flourishes, it's the orchestral sounds combined with Pet's voice that created the magic here & in all the old music we love so much.
Stop all the despair, gang, we've got this music back on the 'net' to share with younger generations & they're LOVING this - they can FEEL the magic !
Credit Tony Hatch, too, he CREATED this package that we love so much!
Come hear music like this on my 500 playlists, including lists for every year since 1900!
we had nothing growing up. but we had this beautiful music. we had everthing didn't we?!!!!! it will never be as great as this in the music world.too bad for our grand children.
I love this song and this video. What a beautiful compilation of images from the 60's! I especially love the Kodak picture of the kids in the snow. It reminds me of a picture that I had when I was 5 or 6 that was exactly like that one! What memories.
It certainly takes an extremely narrow mind to assume that ALL who engage in or enjoy the hip-hop style are JAILBIRDS. You don't have to like hip-hop but maligning those who do displays nothing short of arrogance. Respect others and you'll receive the same in return.
Some of you are as much a part of the modern problems as the music you profess to hate so much. This is a beautiful song yet it inspires you to come here and spew hatred. Hopefully some day you'll learn that loving something (or someone) doesn't mean you have to hate something (or someone) else. Try to enjoy the music.
More to the point about females then was that they didn't just do weak cover versions of hit records adding the occasional contrived woa woahs and yeah-yeahs to try to pretend they were doing something different.
What a condescending statement! Does your inability to appreciate hip-hop render it beneath you? I appreciate all types of music and there are talented artists in each type. Hip-hop certainly isn't represented only by the famous few who shouldn't even be on stage.
@hdecre55 - her web site says she'll be at the Las Vegas Hilton on May 1st! Tony Hatch sure created beautiful music for Pet to sing, he was a master, like Burt Bacharach. I added this to my 1966 playlist, one of 110 lists that let you hear the sounds of any year since 1900 like you're back in the day for nearly 2 hours each with a single click! 300 more playlists feature individual artists, too.
This is the kind of song that makes you think of young couples parked in their cars and making out. Sure was more romantic than having some Hip Hop cRap playing.
i would love to make a move on a chick with this music....but she'd probably slap me and runnaway from my car....if i had a car....and this song....lol, o well, me and my fantasies...
Ya know, im not sure about the rest, but ships in santa monica is/was the hang out for us surfers in the 60's. it is still there. i went passed it last month going to visit my mom. I loved that place. Open 24 hrs, and really a unique coffee shop.
I love this song so much. It always lifts my spirits & puts a melody in my heart. THANK YOU so very, very much for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! Petula Clark is one of my all time favorite female vocalists...what a wonderful talent...and this is my favorite tunes of hers. You've made my day & my week! :)
Hi this is Vinicio from Rome , how you can see from my nick, i'm interested in trams....what city are they from? Europe or USA? thanks and....don't sleep in the subway...Petula is always the best...
Our local radio station often plays this song, as well as several other "less well-known" Petula songs during their "Lunch Time Oldies" broadcast. It's always a pleasant surprise for me!
this is true music. i was born in 1970 and i truelly appreciate all music then and before my time. the computer generatation took over, and sadly music now a days can be computered enhanced even during live performances which is really unjustice to real music. hip hop is endangering true music. the nontalented, like jay-zee, kanye west and all other non talented rap artists who are only listened to young white suburbanites who buy their pathetic sound crap.
@froyboy60651 Bad music of ALL genres is endangering true music. Your assertion that hip-hop is endangering true music is a generalization that does an injustice to truly gifted and self-respecting hip-hop artists everywhere.
@froyboy60651 Absolutely true. Most of the music today will be forgotten in 20 yrs. Pop music sung by female artists' like Pet Clark, Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Connie Francis, Vicki Carr of the 60's and early 70's will live on.
@froyboy60651 I have officially called it cRap. and the name seems to be catching on. My neighbor's 20 year old son heard some of my 60's music playing, and asked more about it. He admitted to me that he feels his generation got ripped off in the music department. I had to agree. By the way, he never heard of Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and I am still waiting to get my CD back!
This reminds me of cruisin' in my 1972 Dodge Demon when I was young and life was so simple!!
Petula is perfect on this song.

Come hear music like this on my 500 playlists, including lists for every year since 1900!

hip hop is not worthy of consideration.
would-be jailbirds giving us the low-down on life?
oh dear.
pel1can 1 year ago
@pel1can
It certainly takes an extremely narrow mind to assume that ALL who engage in or enjoy the hip-hop style are JAILBIRDS. You don't have to like hip-hop but maligning those who do displays nothing short of arrogance. Respect others and you'll receive the same in return.
joreis88 1 year ago
Some of you are as much a part of the modern problems as the music you profess to hate so much. This is a beautiful song yet it inspires you to come here and spew hatred. Hopefully some day you'll learn that loving something (or someone) doesn't mean you have to hate something (or someone) else. Try to enjoy the music.

A great one, thank you. I bought this as a single way back when.
Pet together with Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield were the female songstresses triumvirate of the the 60s.

The lettering in the "Songs In My Life" comp kinda reminds me of Nelly Furtado...I'd like to see her cover "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love"

More to the point about females then was that they didn't just do weak cover versions of hit records adding the occasional contrived woa woahs and yeah-yeahs to try to pretend they were doing something different.

has the dictionary got a definition for gifted that i'm unaware of?
pel1can 1 year ago
@pel1can
What a condescending statement!

Sure was more romantic than having some Hip Hop cRap playing.

this is true music. i was born in 1970 and i truelly appreciate all music then and before my time. the computer generatation took over, and sadly music now a days can be computered enhanced even during live performances which is really unjustice to real music. hip hop is endangering true music. the nontalented, like jay-zee, kanye west and all other non talented rap artists who are only listened to young white suburbanites who buy their pathetic sound crap.
froyboy60651 2 years ago 20
@froyboy60651 Bad music of ALL genres is endangering true music. Your assertion that hip-hop is endangering true music is a generalization that does an injustice to truly gifted and self-respecting hip-hop artists everywhere.
joreis88 1 year ago
@froyboy60651 Absolutely true. Most of the music today will be forgotten in 20 yrs. Pop music sung by female artists' like Pet Clark, Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Connie Francis, Vicki Carr of the 60's and early 70's will live on.
tennisplayers2 1 year ago
@froyboy60651 I have officially called it cRap. and the name seems to be catching on. My neighbor's 20 year old son heard some of my 60's music playing, and asked more about it. He admitted to me that he feels his generation got ripped off in the music department. I had to agree. By the way, he never heard of Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and I am still waiting to get my CD back!
