By definition, avant-garde music is not random. A random process has no goal, but Mr. Bungle clearly does have one, even if it is eccentric. In other words, Mr. Bungle subscribes to a deviant norm, whereas a random process implies the absence of all norms. Truly random music would therefore be unlikely to express any interesting musical ideas. This is not true of Mr. Bungle, who actually have to compose their music, and who enjoy both critical acclaim and a worldwide cult following.
