Why don't people just QUIT flying unless they absolutely have to?!! I guarantee you that would put a stop to a lot if not all of this assinine bullshit!!
@VortexTech ... or because people enjoy flying, it's cheaper and some people need to. If no one went anywhere we'd all be as ignorant as the bible belt (who i think are way more like sheep than frequent flyers "praise Jesus")
How can anyone say that " not single potential attack has not been prevented by the security security systems" in place? Really? Can you be sure? I would imagine that had security measures not changed after 911 that a similar attack would have been repeated. I would really like to know what the haters of the system we have would have a typical airline flight be like, from ticket purchase to being seated on the airplane. How are you going to do it with violating someones "rights"?
@kellyd441 Check the records. They're very clear. TSA is great at finding drug and money contraband, however. There are many observers who feel that this -- not stopping terrorists -- is a primary impetus for the current systems.
@VortexTech Security was increased years ago in response to hijackings. It was increased again after 911. Just because drugs are being seized does not mean this is the focus of the security screening. Since 911, millions of passengers fly every year and how many attempts have been made to bring down an airliner on a flight that originated in the USA? I don't know what "records" you are referring to but that is all the "records" I need. I still am not sure what a better screening system would be.
@kellyd441 The Congressional oversight hearing are instructive in this regard. They demonstrate quite clearly the sham nature of what's going on. Pay special attention to the extremely high screening test failure rates. As for alternatives, see what the rest of the world does. You won't find another country that drags old women out of wheelchairs and fondles little kids in the name of security. They use intelligent profiling and questioning. And it works much better than our $-driven system.
@VortexTech We can go back and forth forever. With any system there is always room for improvement. The fact is that Richard Reid boarded in France and I'm trying to recall a similar incident on a flight originating in the USA since 911. Ms. Castillo made her choice and she had to know it was possible that her private areas would be touched. The machine she refused to use emits less radiation than she would have been exposed to on the flight she was about to board. Seems a publicity stunt maybe.
@kellyd441 These are interesting examples, since there is fair consensus that a Richard Reid type attack (not being conducted by such an idiot as in his case) could likely get past the x-ray body scanners. Top radiation oncologists do not agree with the "less radiation" story the government puts out. The scanners (even if you assume they are working properly!) put all their radiation into the top layers of the skin, creating very high intensity risks to sex organs and children in particular.
Okay I have had the enhanced pat down at the DFW airport a few times and it has never been as bad as she is describing. I don't blame her for opting out of the body scanner, I would too... but with all the crazyness going on today we have to deal with some of this crap. I seriously suggest TSA do some additional training for what they call the "massage", since apparently not all of the TSA employees are doing it the same.
That's a standard pat down. A bomb and plenty of other things could fit "in there". it made me laugh especially hard when she said "it's sad that cause i'm an american i have to go through this".... the US invaded iraq for oil. that's what george bush meant by "possible wmds" If he invaded literally for wmds, we would've hit russia, or korea, or something else. We are perhaps the biggest terrorists of all. Though some soldiers have good intentions, bush didn't.
So now the TSA is giving us a choice, based on nothing more than a false dichotomy: "Would you rather be physically violated by a full genital groping, or would you rather be blown up by a terrorist?" Idiots like "tavannia7" who vote for a full genital groping deserve it... but the rest of us don't.
@237KMT That's an ignorant comment. That's like saying "Thank you all Catholics" for the Inquisition. Extremism is the danger, on both sides of the political spectrum, and in any and all religions -- and corrupt, counterproductive policy systems, like that of TSA.
Strictly just a publicity stunt. Not an Oscar winning performance either. "I travel all the time".......hmmmmm. I would think she would know what to expect.
@contact4u63 I know many frequent travelers who have only now been subjected to having their genitalia fondled by TSA. Her surprise at this is completely valid and understandable. Have you personally undergone this yet? If not, you're really not in a position to judge.
I know at some airports, workers interview each passenger before they get on the plane and look for warning signs that could give away what they could be planning on doing. That would be better than anything the TSA is currently trying to do.
They already found a solution to getting a pat down, go through the stupid scanner. You stand there with your hands up and that's it. It's REALLY not a big deal. Other than a body xray, what else are they going to do? Really? If you're too thorough, people get upset, if you're not thorough enough, people get upset. You can't please everyone, just suck it up.
@tavannia7 When the searches extend to full body cavity searches after a terrorist uses an internal bomb, are you going to keep saying "suck it up?" Why should anyone submit themselves to abuse when there is not one iota of evidence that these enhanced procedures have stopped a single attack, plenty of evidence that they are porous, and a million other soft targets available? Not to mention the money trail between government and the scanner makers. Are you simply gullible, or just don't care?
@VortexTech I seriously doubt they will do full body cavity searches unless they knew there was something to be found since it would take up way too much time. And no, I don't care, because even though the procedure may not work as effectively as you think it should, they have to do something. Do you suggest they just let people walk on through without any kind of search? Right now it's the scanner or a body pat down, so like I said, just suck it up.
@tavannia7 The scanners can be easily bypassed, even through materials placed carefully against the body (internal cavities not required). Not a *single* potential attack has been thwarted by these systems. Ex-DHS head Chertoff who pushed these devices then went to work for their biggest manufacturer, knowing they were ineffective. Groping of six-year-olds is ridiculous (and no, there have been no attacks involving use of children that young). Carefully controlled profiling will be key.
@tavannia7 By the way, do you think there might be an interesting reason why top oncologists are refusing to go through those scanners, despite government assurances that they're safe and can't possibly hurt you? Perhaps the recent spate of massive radiation overdoses at hospitals -- from equipment operating in clean environments with highly trained personnel -- might cause them to question the actual safety of these airport devices, which terrorists can even fool with minimal effort ...
Airport security is a sham. The whole reason for it is a smokescreen there is no terrorist threat. If they were truly concerned with our safety they would screen us before we got into the crowded airport. You people who give up your liberty and dignity for some false sense of security don't even deserve that security. Wake up America can't you see you are being duped?
She should sue. People will listen... Clearly she's upset and should contact a lawyer and not keep her mouth shut. I don't fly anymore because of crap like this.
Fine - take away body scanners and pat down, but don't fucking bitch when a terrorist blows up a plan or rams one into another building. You're so quick to say "I'm an american and shouldn't have to go through this" but what's more important? Hell, do whatever you need to or want to me to make sure I arrive at my destination alive. DONE!
@nashwestguy If you are such a fear junkie that's so scared of your own shadow that you're stupid enough to trash America's United States Constitution for sleazy pornographic security theatre, then you deserve to be enslaved, body, mind and soul. Your stupidity is YOUR problem. You do not have the right to make your problem into everyone's problem.
If you would allow your Wife and Children to be molested by fat strangers with filthy latex gloves, then you are unworthy of a Wife or Children.
When people complain about the security measures (pat downs, body scans, metal detectors) they never have an alternative means of providing for the safety of passengers. You have 3, maybe 4 choices: Body scan(if available), walkthrough magnetometer, patdown or don't fly. She made her choice and didn't like it. She never gives and alternative. Is she suggesting to remove all security? Allow all young hot females to bypass security? What?
@kellyd441 We're talking about security theater, faux-security, not real security. In tests even TSA can routinely get contraband past their own security checkpoints. A determined terrorist could find numerous ways to do the same thing -- at least one of which Susie mentioned. If you look at the history of the x-ray body scanners in particular, their adoption had everything to do with making the vendors wealthy, not protecting the public. Check out ex-DHS head Chertoff's Rapiscan connections.
@VortexTech No security is 100% and the magnetometer is old school for sure. We can agree on that. But you still don't answer my question of a solution. Remove all security? That seems to be her goal. To me the body scan viewed from a remote location is the best from a detection and privacy concern. But people still complain about that. I really want to know what these people propose for security instead of just complaining about what we have.
@kellyd441 I believe that ultimately some form of carefully managed and controlled passenger profiling -- as is used in most of the world now -- will be a key element toward providing the best practical security vs. limiting security abuses. Note though that this does nothing to prevent the movement of security risks to the outside of the security checkpoints, to other populous but soft targets, etc.
@frosted1030 You'll never get enough people to boycott, to have any significant effect. Remember, most people are sheep, and will sell their souls at discount prices, especially in the name of faux-security.
It's always a choice to fly. That's what this is really about. You can choose not to fly, or you can be radiated or felt up. I vote for not flying. Boycott all flying and watch how fast the airlines change their minds about security.
@frosted1030 Boycotting such abuses is unlikely to be effective. And when such abuses are allowed to continue, we encourage their "mission creep" to other aspects of society, especially when we know that a determined terrorist could easily circumvent the "security theater" at the airports (not to mention blowing themselves up *at* the security checkpoint, rather than beyond it!) And what of even more "attractive to terrorists" soft targets? Schools. Shopping centers. The list is endless.
