I live in Haiku Maui overlooking the Maliko Gulch area...My residence is about 2 miles from the ocean....On this morning and the morning after,I could hear the ocean exploding with every set that came through.....It definately was the biggest swell all season..!!!!

North Shore refers to the North Shore on Oahu. Surf gets huge there in the winter, so if you were there another time of year and the waves were relatively flat... that would be why. PeeGee
My wife and I spent our first year of married life together (1970) on the north shore (the quiet end, Mokuleia). But I'd body surf Waimea all the time until it got over ten, and then i'd go in, where I belonged. One day that winter, the managable surf in the late morning got bigger and bigger- we split. It got to over 60 feet. The white water alone covered that big rock on the west (left) side of the bay, opposite the church tower. Beyond belief, that power. Amateurs, stay on the beach.
We saw huge waves on Maui last March (2009) at a popular surfing beach and there were NO surfers in the water. They were standing on the top of the cliffs watching. They said it was not the height of the waves, but the fact that they were breaking so cloe together. If you went down, another onen would crash on top of you. These were experienced surfers.
So you swim out through all this crashing white water to get to the 20 foot swell and hopefully ride it back to shore without being thrown to the bottom and dragged along the corral. And 50 foot waves may be coming. This is definitely a vicarious experience for me.

We can reverse our impact by other means, like advancing our technologies. Corporations all over the world are sitting on patents that stand to stifle their bottom line. Think Exxon doesn't own any patents for alternate energies?

Carbon dioxide is good for the planet in smaller amounts than we are contributing to now and all the volcanoes combined do NOT put out more CO2. This is misinformation being spread to combat global warming policy.
I care deeply about our freedom and our sovereignty, but I won't deny our impact on our climate. I think we can use common sense ways to reverse our impact without taxing the shit out of people. I hate that GW has been made so political.

How can you even say too much CO2 is ok since its "essential to life"? Oxygen is essential, and if there's too much of that, the planet goes through a global cooling. In fact, the first organisms on the planet billions of years ago pumped out so much oxygen into the atmosphere that the planet actually became one giant frozen snowball. As life evolved under the ice, and continents shifted, underwater currents started carrying warm water to vital areas, and the ice melted.

the "world iceball" that occured was a result more so of the position of the supercontinent that existed in the southern hemisphere at the time whick blocked warm waters from reaching the poles and lead to a run away cool down. The end of that same iceage came as both the supercontinent pulled apart and massive volcanic activity released huge amounts of greenhouse gasses. Both together allowed the poles to warm and global temperatures in general to rise.
