Hi Love the video..Where can I get the copy of the score you have which breaks it down into the scales used ? Can you also do a lesson on alternative scales for the chords you played over. Thanks man..Where do I get the backtrack
@69sleezy1 Hey there-- Glad you enjoyed it. All the information, the score I use in the video and a link to the backing track are available on my site: somuchsound dot blogspot dot com.
I'll do a follow up video with alternate uses of Pentatonics over Giant Steps, that's a great idea.
Thank you very much for this lesson very useful, it's pretty clear and english is not my mother langage but it seems music is an universal langage. You're good at explaining thanks!
hey sean its sam took a lesson with you a while back... still reference this video and i'm working on getting smooth with the pentatonics boxes and all the roots... still have the chart we went over with the ways to apply the pentatonic over jazz chords...
Excellent video. Can you explain the pentatonic substitutions for Giant Steps? In other words, there's lots of ii V I's going on, in the key of Eb, G, and B, also just a bunch of V I's. So are you subbing minor or major pentatonic for what chords? It's tough to read the chord subs on this vid.
Also it seems like a V I, and ii V I, are all of the same key center so it's possible that you could have one pentatonic for these key centers, although may sound blander.
@tribalgenes Hey man-- I realize it's a bit hard to read on the video. Go to my site, the chart is available there along with a fuller explanation of what I'm doing here. YouTube will strip it out the url if I put it here in the comments. The address is in the video, right at the beginning and the end.
The guitar community is such a kick ass place when people don't compete and they just share knowledge...Thanks for your lesson I'll do my best to pass it on whenever I can
@icrh2 No not at all. I would never (personally) perform a tune using only Pentatonics as I'd feel like I was running out of material very quickly.
The idea of the video is to break the guitar or string player out of position playing (jumping around on the neck) and instead to be aware of all the available notes from the appropriate scale in a small place on the neck. A key to being comfortable wherever you find yourself on the neck of your instrument.
The song is mostly one chord every two beats so I'm playing 8th notes, it's just tempo is relatively fast. The trick is getting fluid with switching quickly between the different Pentatonic scales. When the harmonic rhythm is a new harmony every two beats, it can get hairy fast.
Driscoll, as in Kermit Driscoll? Are you related? :) I made a video of this myself (whole tone scale based pentatonic in one position). Hope its okey to make it a videoreply :) Great lesson, great playing! Best, Sandemose
Very well explained, thank you very much !

Great post, but what's the purpose of this exercise? Is it just to get you going on the concept of playing only pentatonics?
Great playing, thank you.

This could be done with any scale.

Good stuff Sean, keep em coming!
Are you feeling that at basically 1-chord-per-beat, jamming on 16ths?

Very cool, great playing! What were you using for the backing tracks?
Zombbg4 2 years ago
It's a drum loop and just basic bass and chords I played into Apple's Garage Band. Pretty basic but they do the trick for practicing!

I'm not related to Kermit (that I know of) but I wouldn't mind being related. Thanks for the nice comments.
