I've been watching all thePalo Verde and Southwest videos and needless to say, I am blown away. I was speechless when I saw the railyard. I really want to start a G scale collection, but for now will have to admire your work
@dennissirrine Well Dennis even your Black Widow F3s would look good, if they were in like A-A-B-B-B.
Oh yeah, I just finished another 3/4 Length Dome Lounge in HO, Daylight paint scheme, My next project is to make one more in Union Pacific Paint Scheme, For the Espee part of the San Francisco Overland.
Someday I'll tackle the challenge of making a 3/4 Dome Lounge in G Scale.
Dennis, Southern Pacific only had one, maybe two Cotton Belt F7As In Daylight scheme, Wheras they usually ran like E7 A+B+B or E8/9A+E7B+B or Alco PA1 or2 A-B-A or A-B-B, I wish I could afford to buy a couple of the G Scale Coach and Full Dome car, I think I could come up with a 3/4 Length Dome Lounge., Hey I've done it in HO Scale.
I was wondering on your 360 degree loop when the track goes into a single track how do you coordinate trains going in opposite directions from hitting each other? Do you have to sit there all day and control the trains?
I wish that I could see your layout in person because it is a very nice layout but I am on the other side of the country unfortunately.
The entire layout has a double track mainline, except around the 360 loop, which is single track. When we run up to 2 trains, there is no problem, because they run independant of each other. But when we run 3 or more trains, we have to use a dispatcher, and he controls the movement of all the trains around the layout, just like a real railroad does it. The engineers and dispatcher all have walkie talkies so they can communicate with each other.
Dennis, Do you own a RR train store? because you have lots of trains and a wonderful garden. I wish i can have something like this. How long did it take you to do your garden? How much is all this worth including your trains?
I don't know what diesel locomotive you are talking about. There are about 6 trains running on the layout during this video shoot, and thereare steam locomotives running at the same time that the diesel locomotives are running. And I can see where you might get confused by the steam locomotive sounds , thinking that they are the diesel locomotives, but they are not. I don't have Phoenix Sound boards in the diesel locomotives that were in this video.
I understand gulleys are difficult because you're set is raised off of ground level and a gulley is going to have limited visibility... anyway, thought I'd pass along a few ideas I thought of while watching your footage.
Further, you mentioned adding buildings, which probably includes stations and freight stations where it would be exciting to view very realistic passenger sidings and freight yards! Just a few comments after viewing the footage and it's meant as helpful notes not unfriendly critique.
Noticed you have been considering adding to the layout (mentioned on the PBS segment) and think your use of water and climate would go perfectly with a scene I've found frequently about 1:1 scale trains traversing ground in New Mexico where a Santa Fe train travels on straights and curves in a gully, next to a flowing river (a real classic setting of photos that you've probably seen yourself.)
Appreciate your response. Did you find a specific product that really exceeded your expectations or demonstrated great quality? I mostly collect LGB trains but have seen brochures for a few products that really stood out - specifically replica US freight as well as a scale turntable (Eaglewings) that it even looks like you incorporated into your set. Again, I almost can't express how much I enjoy G gauge and G gauge garden railroading and it's nice to find others who are enjoying it as well.
I am a serious garden railway fan with over 20 years collecting and this layout is very impressive... and what better way to spend an afternoon than outdoors with a hobby!
Thanks for those kind comments. And you are correct, watching these G scale trains transverse the layout in prototypical fashion is a great way to pass the time! If you are ever in the Phoenix area, stop by and play trains with us.
Dennis, it just so happens we are planning a trip to Tombstone in October this year so, I will accpet your invitation and make plans to head that direction to see your garden railroad. I'll keep you posted as the date gets closer and confirm the trip. Thanks so much, Walker
walkerbelle, Great! Here is my phone number. Please call me and let me know the exact date you will be here. My cellphone number is 480-620-9459. Looking forward to seeing you!
Fabulous garden setup. I did see the PBS program and it's awesome. Without a doubt, you have the most impressive garden railroad I have ever seen. If I ever get by Mesa, it would be fantastic to have the opportunity to actually see your railroad close & personal. You DA MAN!!!
walkerbelle, You are more than welcome to stop by any time you are in the Phoenix area and see the layout. I enjoy showing it to people. The layout is open from October 1st to June 1st every year. We have to close it down for the summer because it is so hot here! Just let me know when you want to come.
Absolutely AMAZING work, if I had something like this in my backyard, I'd never leave! Maybe something to work for when I graduate... Loved the Tracks Ahead segment too, btw.
It's a seasonal show. It takes them a year or so to go around the world video taping the segments for the 57 shows that they do. The seventh season starts January 1st, 2009 and runs for 3-1/2 months. Check it out. They have some really neat segments this year!
Thanks so much for watching my video. If you get a chance, I will be posting a video segment that was produced by a PBS show called "Tracks Ahead" coming up in a two weeks. I hope you can view it.

Hey, You do own Black Widow F7s Right, You could do the San Joaqin Daylight.
HunterR909 9 months ago
HunterR909,
Nope, I do not have any F7's. I only have F3's and E8's. An F7 would have to be custom made because no one ever made one in G scale.
