The tank commander leaned stood up out of the turret and flipped off the pilot, who then came around and emptied over half his magazine into the tank. I saw two A-10 Thunderbolts flying in formation over Cologne/Germany on thursday morning. They probably came from an US Airbase in Spangdahlem/Rheinland Pfalz. That´s the only place where A-10 Thunderbolts are stationed in Germany. I never saw one of these aircrafts before. It was an awesome sight.

Though the GAU-8 is what most people love about it (including myself) the upgraded A10 "C" models can carry all the same missiles and bombing ordinance that F15's and 16's can. The C models can also carry up to 5 or so aim-9 missiles and 2 or 3 JDAM's up to 2K if need be. The only thing they could improve is developing more power engines to mount on them for power/speed.

The F-35 sacrifices the A-10s capablities to do the same job speed is nothing if the enemy can auto track you and fire missiles that go far faster. The Tunguska would rip apart the F-35 in seconds if it got as low as the A-10C could go. Not all F-35 will have VTOL they are just too expensive 3x the cost of an A-10 and carry less weapons. The F-35 is not stealth at the rear so its an easy target when it is moving away. and pumps out far more heat than the A-10.

Ask any viper driver that had his ass handed to him from a mud level encounter with an A10 in training and tell me how crappy the A-10 is. In it's flight envelope, nothing can beat it. If the A-10 gets out of the mud and into a fight above 2k feet over open terrain it will get dead real quick, but low level in varied terrain nothing can touch it.

THe A-10 has a primarily Titanium frame, as it is supposed to be exposed to excessive groundfire as a slow-moving, close fire support aircraft. To replace every jet in the military with an A-10 would be retarded, as the A-10 is slow and unmanueverable compared to other jets. While the A-10 is equipped with flares and lock-on missile deterrents, it is screwed if it encounters other fighter jets in the vicinity.

The A-10 started upgrading to A-10C in 2007 it will be in use till 2028 at the minimum and maybe kept in service beyond then depening on its performance vrs the F-35 I cant see the F-35 doing any better its faster thus the pilot has less time to kill and the Gau-8 is cheaper to fire than missiles and the F-35 cant withstand 23mm AAA like the A-10 can.. The A-10 is now used at mid altitude with excursions below 7000feet to use its gun. It now has a glass cockpit and Jdam capability.

@NielsShoe The A-10 is a poor fighter-jet, thats why. The A-10 cannot outperform the F-35 in terms of speed, the F-35 is almost impossible to shoot down in fact because it's so fast. There is no AA gunner out there in the middle of the goddamn Middle East that can calibrate shooting half a mile in front of the F-35 in order to correctly hit it. The F-35 is also portable as a VTOL aircraft, making it as easy to land as a helo in small airspaces. I still <3 the A-10 most tho. Chaotic power. :D

I find many of the comments about the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II nearly laughable. The A-10 was designed in the 1970's as a response to the threat of Soviet tank formations in Eastern Europe. The neutron bomb was another program along with ASAT. I remember the fight in Congress over all these things. I have a relative that works in a factory making rounds for A-10. No one even heard of the Taliban when A-10 was proposed, designed, built. It has done well though in many roles.

One thing about it, the Soviets aren't the threat they used to be.

The f35 will phase out the tired f16 fleet, assuming the USAF variant is even purchased (est, 2016). And will have one hell of a reputation to live up to. The A10 is perfect for the job it's greatly needed to do. It's slow yet, maneuverable, carries a massive payload, a devastating cannon, laughs at enemy air defense, and flys at low altitude VERY well.
