  • @SteffanLlwyd well, my grnadfather used to work there with my dad. but my grandfathers gone and, yeah my dad misses working there. but he goes to the refinery to get scrap steel from a smaller branch from the original company that sells the steel

  • @TheHawkeye518 The funny thing is that I like the smell of steelworks and iron foundrys, though we don't have many left in the UK. You might like to find Harald Finster's photo's on the internet. Loads of great shots of all kinds of industries. My favourite of his is is an abandoned coke works in Belgium. Hope you like them too.

  • @DaddyOD13 cooled slag.

  • @gregordiesel Danke!

  • Hmmm....a slag dump?

Need to get me down there.

  • uff da! dats to hot fer roastin weenies! :o)

  • Ah yes... When the US was able to produce it's own products... I sure do miss those days. Now everyone buys cheap crap at Wal-Mart and feeds China with money. How I wish we could go back to producing our own products.

  • @4gasem amen to that mate.

  • @4gasem I totaly agree. Walmart is killing our country.

  • reminds me of a slack dump beside a coal mine... mountains were created by stuff like this!

  • so that's how they make iron ore

  • @Reds15OO LMFAO! Minecaft for the WIN!

  • Should have jumped on an tube and rode it down....

  • WOW!! this is the sort of thing that makes you-tube truly ace, because otherwise i wouldn't be able to appreciate this sort of thing, GREAT!!!

  • Mmh a hot bath...

  • Damn. Talk about turning day into night.

  • I think i saw the terminator in the slag when they dumped the first batch

  • Smells like burnt brakes.

  • My eyes!

  • Environmental friendly

  • Where did the sun go?

  • thats some hot shit

  • I gather you two have a difference of opinion, LOL. BrassAxe mentioned the damage done to the town and environment. He is absolutely correct in his statements. The problem now is, it's being done to China, most likely by the same corporate interests. Not that I give a damn about China's government, but the poor suckers that are working the mill for $12.00 per day are in the same position as our workers were over a hundred years ago.

  • Worked there in 69 before the service. As a kid I remember it lighting up the sky when they dumped at night.

  • Shouldn't there be a way to harness the energy produced from all that stuff?

  • Someone bring marshmallows !

  • Rails look real close to the edge.

  • Chuck Norris' waterslide...

  • And that is how McDonalds makes there coffee.

  • It would suck if you fell into that

  • @Zim804 nah if you were under that and it pour on ya then your a gone!

  • 1:11 & 3:22

    ^ The money shots.

  • What the hell is Slag anyways?

  • @starguard Slag is a waste product that comes from copper smelting or steelmaking. It;s made up of phosphorous, calcium, limestone, ash, remnants of chemical reactions between the metal and the furnace, etc. Basically, slag is any substance that doesn't belong in copper or steel.

  • @Felamine Oh.. Thanks :-)

  • I lived next to one of these stinking nasty ass steel plants for 10 years. Car paint forget it, your house hah. Ever seen a driveway shine like glitter move next to one of these fucking places. Funny thing is most of the people working out there live and shop out of town(which is dead anyway.) They (open the stacks) as I am told at night usually even though they have all this clean shit in the stacks they bypass it a lot from what I am told. Hope it closes fucking place sucks.

  • @hotdog2020 Yes.. For the sake of you, I hope they close it down.. Lets shut down Industry for your comfort! If you don't like your location.. MOVE.. Go to a place with no backbone, no industry no resources.. Live there.. Then you won't have metal for you car, your appliances, your medical equipment, everything that runs your life, and even the military steel used to protect your dumb ass.. It's ignorant self centered people like you that drive humanity into the dirt.. You ignorant Fuck..

  • @BrassAxe I am only going to respond to one thing in your response. That is the second word in my post.... Reread what you so failed to understand the first time. Seeing you could not even understand the meaning of the second word of 6 lines then you fail to understand the rest of it. Good day.

  • @hotdog2020 Yeah. I realize that you "lived" there. But I was speaking about the general ignorant attitude of people like you. Not you specifically other than my first and last two sentences... I don't need to reread anything, you're sad attempt to defend your imbecilic mind didn't work. And just for your information, Bethlehem steel is closed.. Intended to be turned into a complex of progress "Bethlehem Works".. But the only thing there now is a Casino.. You should be proud.. Moron..

Moron..

  • @BrassAxe One more time since you are slow. "I lived next to one of these stinking nasty ass steel plants for 10 years." The plant i use to live by is still very active. The hold the town hostage using jobs as the means. The town is broke because they don't pay no where near the taxes they should. The infrastructure of the town, the basics is crumbling. The poisoned a creek that runs for 4 miles runs behind schools etc. You can't even wade in it. They fenced it in dammed it up....continued.

  • @BrassAxe They drained it all 4 miles of it. They had to take up to 8 inches of soil out. Any guess asshole how much that cost? Want to also guess what that poison did to the aquifer? Want to also guess as to why lung disorders are higher in the city then any area surrounding it? The funniest thing about the whole fucking thing is you. You defend these assholes meanwhile they don't even LIVE in the city they work in. I know many many workers and retired guys too. Continued...

  • @BrassAxe Don't even act like I am a fool who knows nothing. There are 3 guys who retired from there at my work now all with 30 or more years in. I know just what the fuck that shit hole is doing to the area. They do too. They call it "blowing the stacks" They bypass the multi million dollar EPA mandated air cleaners and let it rip! Shove it up your ass and whistle dixie for all I care. You are an idiot. Done with this convo with you.

  • @hotdog2020 who cares, stop crying. Anyone who doesn't like the living situation can move to another city. No one forces you to live where you do. Go change your diaper baby.

  • @bluedavenger Another dumb fuck who can't read before opening their mouth and sticking their dick in it. I did move a year ago! What a fucking dumb fuck! You lick windows? Read asshole read!

  • "What did you do today daddy?" "Oh just drove to a hill where i could dump some slag" "..."

  • I remember the smell of them dumping slag over 5miles away in Hellertown.....Wish I was old enough to tour BS before they boned themselves and shut down production of steel :(

  • imagine if you are taking a shit down there

  • @sbalogh...'tis nay this "spam" of which you speak- Yea, 'tis TRUTH for all who lived and died with the making of steel: THE COKE! These rats have just killed the last vestiges of what once was the 7th largest steel mill on P.Earth. The coker-mill is now gone. Lackawanna, NY(where I was born) is now 'officially,' industrially dead. Market forces command industry- However, 'American' socialists command job-destruction. On the contrary, those who have the ability to THINK do read "walls of text!"

  • I like the way the locomotive sits away at a safe distance

  • G l o r i o u s.

  • that looks fun

  • wouldn't wanna be taking a shit at the bottom of that hill

  • u sure that slag can't be used for something?

  • ...like those "Mountain Top Removal" guys. All or most of 'em- THEIR 'bosses!' Not the members of these ".org"'s... No. They're innocently led along on emotions. Who R the ".org" CONTROLLED by?! Why? Granted, the 'coalers' MUST return the area AND ALL habitat 2 a non-eroding naturally adapting environment. However, these ".org"'s R attempting 2 defunct the entire industry! WTF are WE 2 do 4 heat, light, clothing, food and shelter if these "scab-Nazis" politically/legalistically kill off JOBS!!!

  • @SittingMooseShaman why do you SPAM? Nobody reads a wall of text like that.

  • ...and picked-up where Eurasian socialism was BEFORE Stalin and Hitler came along...and FDR kinda liked that good ol' Eurasian socialism- The "Depression" made it look sensible. Some of its' ideals are too. However, it must fit into the Constitutions' parameters: NOT replace it! Our present decline goes beyond just "market forces" I'm from Buffalo, NY: Where Beth.Steel & others+ the ancillary industries once made BFLO prosper. A REAL "Working Class!" Today, BFLO is near 'death,' as a city. PO'd!

  • ...this "Dumping slag..." represents an unfolding American tragedy and impending defeat to the political [legalistic] forces of the UN(Eurasian socialists). The 'Liberal' movement of America- to which I hold a great value-(Even the Founders were liberals, Yet still, hard-asses) has, unwittingly or not, been the tool of these foreign powers: The German MILITARY surrendered. However EUROPES' Nazis did not-nor did they sign any document of disbanding- They(survivors of WW2 & exiles)simply came here

  • @Maphysto.... Ennyways...ya gotta be an observer of times! ...um-mm, sorry for the crude vulgarisms, but it just pissesmeofftonoend as to what has/is happening to the American industrial base during this post-WW2 generation: That 'war' has yet to 'end!' A steady decline; American FABRICATION has stalled, stagnated and IS near its' death; And the 7-Pillars of the Liberal Arts in America have been infiltrated&politicised by the Eurasian Socialist Party and then USED to help bring America DOWN...

  • Wow! I can remember the glow at night from the hill on 512 going north out of Bath.

It always looked like all of Bethlehem was on fire.

  • @SittingMooseShaman ....The fuck? What do liberals have to do with any of this? And why do you feel it necessary to be such an asshole?

  • Chuck Norris's toe jam

  • many animals were harmed in the making of this film.

  • how do the cars get cleaned? the slag must layer on fast..

  • @lexmark136 they just melt some more steel and that gets mixed in with the next batch

  • now imagine a red dragon's fire breath =)

  • Unless someone invented a new way to produce steel, this is the process to make it. Doesn't matter if they closed factory and fired workers, it should be an ongoing process some other place on this planet.

They also say it is being sold after cooling, so it is kinda recycled.

Unless you grew your computer from some seed, this is how some of its materials done. Unfortunately.

  • Is that lava?

  • And as the slag of Satan was thrust upon the Earth, the world plunged into darkness.

  • hundreds of gallons of pure awesome.

  • In Soviet Russia, we dump steel, submarine built from slag.

  • Russian pool water.

  • A description for us laypeople is in order here. What is slag and why is it being chucked there?

  • @1971ojoalparche1971

Slag is the impurities skimmed from the steel making process. The slag is dumped to cool off.

  • @cjc3000 Thanks for the info. Slag is used to make anything then?

  • @1971ojoalparche1971

Once the Slag is allowed to cool off and solidify, it can be broken up into various sizes for reclamation. Some things that it can be used for is in road making materials, bitumen sealing materials or the manufacture of some insulating materials. In some cases the slag will not be reclamed and will just built up over time, kind of looking like solidified lava from a volcano.

  • @cjc3000 Fantastic. Thank you.

  • @cjc3000 It sure as heck builds up. The area shown here was build up at least 30 feet high over the years. Mountains were formed!! They are only now slowly taking those mountains down and reclaiming the flat area around the slag dumps. It's a crazy sight to see growing up around these man-made hills of rock, and suddenly they are going away. My parents saw it the other way around. Flat land turned to mountains!

  • @cjc3000 isnt slag dangerous though??? like they stuff from Chernobyl that was all radioactive

  • @SgtMustang375 Well if it's still hot then it's dangerous, however the stuff you see here is the result of Steel production so once it cools down then it's just like any other sort of rock. The Stuff from Chernobyl was radioactive because of the Uranium fuel so it will take thousands of years to cool down both in temperature and in radioactivity where as the slag here will cool down in a matter of hours.

  • @spacewizard1 aah i see thats kinda wat I was thinkin as far as this thsns for not callin me an idiot for not knowin

  • Dump the slag on congress. None of them deserve to be employed. We've listened to the free trade rhetoric for too long and the results are a bankrupt government and no jobs. Enough is enough, really.

  • Haha slag

  • @arlingtontrains7 The bases of the slag cars I think are weighted down so they don't tip with the buckets, and they probably positioned the pivot point of the the slag buckets so that the cars don't tip.

  • Yikes! watch out for the splash! thanks for sharing this insider's perspective

  • Slag dumping is illegal in Oregon now. :(

  • so cool

  • Thats a so great video...its very sad how the industrie goes dead...greating an thanks for the video from switzerland!

  • 1994? You mean 1894!

  • @ocin63 wtf?

  • @Pimpmastahanhdeuce... Amen!

  • @richmeister1... are there even any operating blast-furnaces actually left in the USA to dunk 'em in?!

  • yes, the US actually has alot of steel mills, but we ship the ingots abroad to make inferior products or we buy it back as small parts and components which then we may or may not build into something labeled, made in america. either way, we shouldnt be exporting anything except finished products, and we really shouldnt be importing anything except certain foodstuffs and cigars.

  • thats freakingcool.. but i dont see how when they tip the buckets to dump them.. what keeps that whole freight car from tipping over?

  • Let's see some of the people that walk on hot coals try this one on for size.......or is that sizzle?

  • ... fraggin' politicians(BOTH 'partys') have HUGE 'folios stuffed w/Chinese investments.

6 buckets we see here! And the shot from China?! What? 24 or so doubles!! on a fraggin' MOUNTIAN of slag. 'Slag!' That's what the US capitalists AND liberals have left US!! This is now 2011- I'm sure this plant is closed and gone- scrap, sold TO China! The USA only accounts 4 ~20% of Chi-manufactured goods! "Service Economy" is 'SLAVE' economy; 'Serve' who? Why pompous, collegiate "elitists!"

    & govt pigs!

  • @SittingMooseShaman I have to agree, those traitors should take a bath in this stuff.......
