  • FABulous song! Perfect to Charleston by.

  • i love how roger was 18 when this song came out. i love him!

  • Interesting - the introduction of this piece is almost entirely similar to the introduction of Julian Fuhs' version of "Kannst du Charleston, tanzt du Charleston".

  • And this has what to do with the recording?

  • Possibly, this was an reply on a comment that has been removed. Now it lost his context.

  • My last name is HOTTENTOT :D!

  • "What makes the Hottentot so hot? Courage!"

    (See: The Cowardly Lion.)

    Nifty montoage.

Thanks for listing this little gem.

  • Yes, another American friend wishes you Merry

Christmas--and she happens to be Jewish. :)

But some of us pitiful Americans are still sane,

at least as much as some Europeans!

  • @barbcard sane as christians or non believers?

  • I must admit this kind of political hypercorrectness more and more influences public life in my country as well.

  • I hope this is a joke, all my American YT friends are wishing me a Merry Christmas. They won't fine I guess...

  • Great song! Of course Hottentot can be despective, but it should be seen in the context of its time (look for rundunksender's similar post "Bei den Hottentotten" by Efim Schachmeister und sein Jazz-Orchester).

  • I'm with you on that, at least when it comes to old stuff. Can you imagine "Oriental Moon" changed into "Asian Moon", or "I'm an Indian Too" renamed "I'm a Native American Too"?

  • Kahn knew how to make jazzy music but I bet he didn't know that Hottentot is actually a derogative word for an African tribe otherwise known as the "Click" people. Good play on words, anyway. I confess I used to think the word was German!

  • The word is of Dutch (or Afrikaans) origin, I believe. It sound offensive nowadays, unless used in a phrase like "Isn't this a hot tent, tot?" Anyway, it's a hot Charleston indeed.

  • Good pun,D. And I really didn't mean to

get into PC'ness. I agree that unless something is very very offensive, the old stuff should be left alone. Of course, the song title is just a play on words anyway. To add to your examples, Little African-American Sambo sounds absurd, esp. since he wasn't American. And how about The Shiek of the Occupied Territories?

  • And Lawrence of Saudi Arabia...

  • I know it's acoustic,but I think it's Roger Wolfe Kahn's best effort.

  • Wealth and breeding sometimes don't follow the norm......He chose Jazz and the popular music of the day.....but, I bet he knew the classics as well...Charleston on.............

  • Given that he was a society playboy who didn't have to work, its surprising how good all of his records are.
