What actually happened in I am legend is that Will Smith takes Sam (the dog) back home after being attacked and injects her with the serum that he was experimenting with ( I think it was the one that turned the mouse normal) he then sits back with her on his lap hoping for the best but when he realises its not working and she starts to change he suffocates (strangles?) her not only to save himself but also he would rather kill her then let her change into one of them monsters.

@igiuxx Very true but also she was the only friend he had too and when she died that left him completely alone, the scenes after are very sad too when hes driving and looking at the empty passenger seat where she used to sit and hes in the video shop when hes talking to the mannequin and says "I promised a friend I would say hello". Very underrated movie.

The sadness over having the son is that the husband didn't think the baby survived. He didn't even know his wife survived until the doctor came to get him. He planned to be with her in the birthing room but there were complications & he was forced to leave. Nobody could tell him if his wife or their child was going to make it. That's what made it so sad. He had finally come to the realization of what being a father truly is - pure love...

Phenomenon is sad because John Travolta's character is dying, has just gotten away from a research facility, and they're having their last night together, just doing 'everyday' things. it's a surprisingly good/sad movie.
