what a great video, with all the youtube vids I'v seen advocating creationism its good to see at least one other person has there head properly screwed on :)
This video is a well thought out, researched and presented opinion, showcasing a personal point, which is valid, and understanding. It's also condescending, and the lady in question is obviously shoved waaaay to far up her own arse for her opinions to be taken seriously.
all wars: Grown men acting like fucking children. STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE! I WANT THAT AND THAT! YOU DIDN'T DO MY WORK! Anyone who takes the fucking time to sit around and argue their views on atheism theism or agnostisim is a fucking drain on society. Go to fucking school, learn a science, contribute to it, push humanity forward not fucking worry about trivial shit. If you constantly talk about your beliefs or disbeliefs about insignificant things you should be shot. Fucking liberals.
I believe you did a very good job on this video micki and definately agree more people have died in the name of relgion than money or oil. At last count I believe their were over 3000 religions in the world. You know the basis for christanity is the struggle between good and evil or for we believers GOD vs satan. If you were satan and wanted to develop your army thru the many yrs what better way than to create religion. Divide and concur.GOD the creator and religion are two different subjects.
No, cupcake, you don't know. You are not the authority of the universe and have some superior knowledge to what it is and what it isn't.
Please tell me, prove to me, that out of all the different beliefs, opinions, and views - Theism, Deism, Agnosticism, and Atheism - that yours is the correct, accurate, and infallible one?
Why is everyone else wrong and you perfectly, undeniably right?
@NoelBlueheart If this is a comment directed at the girl in the video then I think you've gotten it twisted slightly. I think the main point she is putting across is that we should question religion, which is fair enough really. I'm an Atheist simply because I prefer facts and information over the word of some book written thousands of years ago by a group of people who had almost no understanding of how the universe works.
@Amernee Questioning religion is great. Even religious people question it. But no, that's not her main point. Her main point was "think like me or you're wrong". If her point was just to question religion, then why did she criticize Agnostics exactly that? As for facts and information, that's bullshit and you know it. Atheism is not based on facts. It's based on subjective, personal opinions like everything else.
@NoelBlueheart The thing about the Agnostic's view is that it's a fairly silly one. An Agnostic's view is this; "There's no proof for or against God existing, therefore I believe both are equally probable." The problem with this is that, if this attitude was applied to something like the existence of unicorns - for example - it would be seen as absurd. "There isn't any proof to say unicorns don't exist, therefore you telling me they do leaves me no choice but to remain open to that possibility."
@Amernee Firstly, Agnosticism is the most scientific view of all. According to the scientific method which you should have learned in Elementary school, you cannot draw final conclusions without data to draw them on. Since we have no data regarding the existence or nonexistence of God, you should remain indifferent to the both notions as no data means we don't know as of yet. That's Agnosticism.
@NoelBlueheart But the point I make is that when anyone makes a claim of any sort, the onus is on them to support that claim. If someone claims to have psychic powers, I want proof. If they can't prove it, I don't believe them, no matter how much they argue that they do. Without proof to back that claim up I'm not interested. It's as simple as that.
No where in any scientific law or the scientific method does it say anything about burden of proof. Let me ask you a question. Do you hear any scientists saying there is no intelligent life anywhere in the universe but on Earth? You don't. Even though there is no evidence proving the existence of intelligent life there is no evidence disproving it. If a scientist makes the claim that there is no life, he would have to prove it. Claims of nonexistence are also claims.
@NoelBlueheart ...That doesn't mean I'm definitely right for thinking the way I do, but the available evidence and research suggests I'm probably more likely to be and that's why my convictions lie where they do. If evidence turned up tomorrow to suggest it is more likely that God does exist then I would be open to that as well, because like I said I go with the information available. I'm not an Atheist just for the sake of it, I think the way I do simply because I prefer logic over blind faith.
(cont.2) Your opinion is equally based on faith. Definition of faith: "extreme trust or confidence in something." It has nothing to do with religion. And, please tell, what evidence is there that proves God is unlikely? This ought to be good because I know that is an outright lie. If you don't base your belief on evidence, and lack of evidence is shown to be inconclusive via the scientific method, then what do you base it on? I reckon that's faith.
@NoelBlueheart But it isn't. If science can't explain something then I'll remain skeptical about such things. I'll go into more detail and reply to your other comment later as now is not a good time. What I will say is that if you wish to continue this debate you need to drop the attitude, I'm very much open to ideas and am genuinely interested in what you have to say, but not if you're going to be an arsehole about it...
@NoelBlueheart Going back to this point here, I think my other 2 comments have illustrated my point on why Atheism is not built on faith but rather reliance on the facts at hand. There have been many scientific revelations that have blown claims made in the Bible out of the water - evolution, the fact that the Earth is billions rather than thousands of years old etc. And at the end of the day, non-belief in one thing is not by default faith in another. It begins and ends at the first instance
@Amernee There is not one scientific source in this entire universe that has disproved anything written in the Bible. Many great men of history spent their entire lives trying to do just that to no avail.Sir Issac Newton was one only to give in after 50 yrs. How's these names for believers.Webster,Lincoln,Washington,William Bryant,Mark Twain, and even Nepoleon Bonaparte @ Columbus.just to name a few,As for evolution a humming bird ain't never gonna be a peacock.Biblical earth is millions of yrs.
@Amernee As for my non-belief in God being based on facts and information being seen as bullshit..? Why? I see no proof for there being a God, but I do see scientific evidence to suggest that His existence is extremely unlikely. The difference about my opinion on God to that of a religious person's is that mine is an informed one, rather than one based on faith...
(cont.) If you believe that in all our current capabilities we can't disprove unicorns, then you're hopeless. I'll do exactly that.
-Unicorns don't appear anywhere in the fossil record as a whole or a link.
-Unicorns originate in short narratives from Europe written for amusement, as fiction, and was never meant to be taken literally as an actual species or animal.
Can you disprove God in this same way? No, you can't.
@NoelBlueheart Haha okay let me expand on this. You're absolutely right, because Unicorns don't appear on the fossil record we have to assume that they don't exist. It's the only logical stance to take regarding Unicorns' existence... BUT, what you're forgetting is that Unicorns are magical! If a person claiming Unicorns existed turned round and said this, and told you that when they die, a Unicorn simply disappears into thin air, what scientific evidence could you provide to refute that claim?
(cont.) Where does "magical" mean your remains can't fossil? In fact, the early fables of unicorns never had magical powers. If they did, then powers are they? True their horns were said to have the ability heal sickness, but no claims of magic are made. If a person claimed they vanish after denying it won't change anything. You can't change the established nature of a creature to avoid it being disproven. No where in the unicorn myth does it say they vanish upon death. It's a weak argument.
@NoelBlueheart That's quite interesting actually, since unicorns may have originally appeared based on Narwhals horns, and it turns out narwhals are one of the best sources of vitamin C folks living purely off meat (eskimos for ex.), that would cure sickness nicely. I do love tracing the roots of myths ^_^
Smart woman!!!!!!!!!! I don't believe in everything you said but those are minor points witch is open between people to creat understanding my faith in human kind is restored........... Slightly
HAHAHAHA! you do realize that atheism is a religion don't you?! atheism is the positive affirmation that you know that there is no god. this is a belief system like any other the ONLY difference is that you BELIEVE that there is no god b/c you can't prove it. that's faith my dear. atheism is completely ridicules position to hold. it is by far and away less logical less defendable than theism EVER was/is. i hope you're up to your religion being mocked openly for the foolishness that it is.
@RedLetterChristian I disbelieve in a god and it requires no faith, trust me. You disbelieve in unicorns, Ra, buddha, leprechauns, giant sea serpents, aliens, etc. That means you must have hundreds of faiths and religions stacked up from your belief that unicorns or any other supernatural (or even natural *cough*evolution) don't exist if they're outside of christianity. I love how christians play the "you're stupid, too" game. It doesn't work. My reasoning is based observable fact.
You’re allowed to question religion… I ask questions about my religion which is Islam, and I find the answers. There is no compulsion in religion; everyone is free to believe in what they want. But it is wrong to completely insult religion and say things out or arrogance… I’m not talking about you in the video I’m just talking about some people who say “Islam is a barbaric religion”.. when they have not even read the Qur’an and they see some terrorist and think that’s what Islam is.
@99N92 I'm a christian and I agree with you. People are speaking arrogantly of religions they do not understand. Infidels tend to hate anything that restricts their immoral desires. The path to righteousness does not appeal to them. It's up too good people to represent the faiths well. Take care. Asalaam Alaikum.
I encourage all self described Evolutionists, Atheists, Agnostic, Satanists, Buddhists and Luciferians to participate in the facebook group, Lucifer's Constellatory Vanguard.
No Deities, Devils, Ghouls, Ghosts, Spirits, or self deceit...
I'm atheist and proud of it. I'm not afraid to tell anyone, but I just hate when my Christian friends try to get me to believe. They send me bible passages through texts, voicemail, and email, but I tell them I still won't believe. It pisses me off!!!! One time at school this Christian came up to me and slapped me in the face with a bible and said, "Read this, it's good for you. Burn in hell you atheist!!!!" I'm tired of Christians!!!!!
@twilightiefan13 The only thing I can say is not all christians are like the ones who go around slapping people. I'm christian and I think your christian friends are insane. Slapping people? I mean really....who does that?? I'm sorry that your 1st impressions of christians are so awful. That isn't your fault. It's theirs.
@Velayasha They are insane!! I tell them as politely as I can that I really don't want them to do this, but then they just push me over the edge. And THANK YOU. Finally a christian that can accept my feelings :)
Let's see, in order for an atheist to declare there is no God, the atheist would have to have infinite knowledge of all dimensions to be 100% certain that no God exists anywhere. But only God possesses infinite knowledge. So an atheist would actually have to be God to in order for there not to be a God. Oh I get it.
@theabiotictheory there is a flaw in logic with that arguement - because we can only create a conception of God, the concept of infinite knowledge - but using the term ambiguesly doesn't mean there is a God... if that makes sense.
But then an atheist is not in a position to make a claim that there is no God. However, he doesn't make that claim. He just says there is no persuasive arguement or evidence for him to believe in a deity. It is humble, intellectually honest. :)
Religions, let them fight = breathing room for rational people! Those arrogant meddlers are dangerous enough while fighting. It's all in their brainsick nature. They are all without exception bonkers or just simply retards. Many of their leaders are evil incarnate also.
Untouchable status? No we haven't, it's not rude to debate it
Unquestionalble beliefs? They are questionable...
Wipe each other out based on blind faith? What are you talking about? Rememeber the world wars, vietnam, Afghanistand, Iraq? Nothing to do with religion or belief in god
Questioning faith... Why do you assume people who don't share your view don't question their faith?
You may not believe in god but you do have very strong beliefs about believers. Try questioning your own beliefs?
Normally, I tend to sympathize with many atheists. However, you are the rare exception. Your video merely trolls on from 0:01 to 3:12 I sure hope there was a much more intelligent and coherent follow-up.
Hey, welcome to the "herd of religious independent thinkers"!!!
One definition of RELIGION: " : a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith" . This explains why Atheists seem to spend endless waking hours ardorously trying to convince everyone (including themselves) that God does not exist. Isn't that a complete waste of time? Nope, it's simply how atheists "keep their faith"? " You've simply changed your religious faith to a new god - yourself.
I could replace that definition of faith with "IDEOLOGY" : Doctrine, philosophy, body of beliefs or principles belonging to an individual or group. There's an additional element to religious faith which is belief in a being or beings that can't be proved to exist.
Most atheists never spend any time considering God(s) and rarely discuss the subject because it never enters their mind
Also we certainly don't believe we are gods, we simply don't believe in (a) divine being(s).
@revealer007 I'm an atheist and I hardly think of myself as a god! That is a one I'v yet to hear. As for atheists wasting time... uhh... isn't going to church a spending time for your religion? Why can't an atheist spend time denouncing it? Also, there needs no convincing of oneself to not believe in god if your an atheist... we already know. :) Once facts overcome fallacies, it's really quite simple.
@revealer007 The only "faith" I'm adhering to is a way of thinking based on an observation of repeated occurrences and the mechanisms that most logically explain them. I'll admit to that. But inductive logic cannot bring one beyond mere falsifiable theories. And science is the term we use for the application of said logic to the material world. To a limited extent, it works. The truly religious are the ones saying that they KNOW anything beyond this- beyond what a limited human CAN conclude.
@revealer007 Oh, and atheists generally don't think of the universe in terms of "beings" one way or another because there's no reason to assume they're universally relevant-most atheists converge on a materialist view of reality. This is in contrast to the believer who asserts that: 1) God exists, 2) is on his side 3) He knows the mind of the Creator of the Universe; he believes that God wants very specific things from him (for instance, to cut off parts of his penis or not eat specific foods)
@bdjennings Lost? I think she sounds much more sure of herself and far more logical than any religious person I have ever talked to. Religion blinds people to all the realistic and practical in the world. People should focus on the now, not attmepting to save themselves from their ridiculous fear of death.
Yes, people should have the right to question religion. But it also must be realized that a definitive answer on whether or not God exists (in human, matter, or energy form) will never come to be. There is no way to prove or to disprove the existence of God. All we can go by is what we know, what we think, and how we feel. No ounce of logic can be used to sway towards either position. It must be excepted that we will always wonder how we got here, why we are here, and if there is an afterlife.
@MFLuder77 Logic? I have to say that I think a scientific explanation is more logical than the idea of a large ever existing entity which floats around everywhere, all the time, just managing to create the entire universe. And then hang around ridiculousing insignificant humans listening to them whine through pray. I just don't buy it. Sorry.
@MFLuder77 Logic dictates that one should not assent to a position based on no evidence, and that, when there is a simpler explanation, that explanation is more likely to be true than one which, for example, requires unicorns, UFO's, or imaginary homophobic sky people. Logic also suggests that the people who assert that they DO have knowledge of a supreme intelligence have the burden of proof.
I'm glad that the larger percentage of comments here are not extremely vulgar or immature. It speaks well of the mindset of Atheists and Agnostics (who by the "like/dislike" ratio, are the majority here). I don't mention Theists b/c their comments are usually either the rudest or condescending.
Anyone who has seen the comment sections in other videos on Youtube (or any other place on the internet for that matter) that have a pretty girl in them, should know that I'm talking about.
Very well said. Clear, concise, and and true. I have never heard the inherent flaws in agnosticism so eloquently pointed out. Also your definition of what atheism really means leaves no room for misunderstanding.
I am showing your first blog blog tonight in my church to my students and I am in agreement with your first blog. The mocking of people who have faith discredits your intelligence. It is OK to question and those that dont are not apart of a true Faith. Jesus came to kill religion, he hated it and he hate division. We as Christian have two jobs, love God and Love people. Im not sure what kind of Christians you have been exposed to but it doesnt sound like it was healthy. I loved Ur 1 and & blog
The bible speaks of those who will turn away from God ("Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed") ... It speaks of how many will want to see God Himself in order to believe. Wouldn't you rather believe in the God who died for our sins so that when you die, you'll go to heaven? You have nothing to lose if you believe in this, really. I hope you believe soon :)
Very well put- this video addresses personal, political and philosophical use of religion that can be helpful for the understanding of religion and damning for the unquestionable attitude people carry with religion. It's postmodern, anti-metanarrative, and also informative- nice work =)
Atheists do these three things: poop, spew, and cry. But what they don't know is that we still love them!!! Yes, because we know they are like babies. They think they know everything
The reference to the flying spaghetti monster when defining what an agnostic believes is a little misleading. It is a parody religion so it has no place in the debate. Agnosticism is based on knowledge, Atheism is a belief. I consider myself Agnostic/Atheist meaning I don't believe in "god/gods" and I do not claim to know that a deity does not exist. An Atheist will say "no god, end of story" just as a believer will say "there is a god, end of story". Both these statements are quite ignorant
So she has a lot of "ideas". Are any of them fact? Very unlikely. Good for you. Can she define her own words she is using, and on top of that prove her speculations? Not at all. Conclusion: this is a bunch of crap as well... But I'd still hit it.
everyone should question their faith whether they be atheist or religious ..obviously the video exagerates the "war" between the world and religion.. likening the existance of god to a flying spagetti monster ? you realize 1 out of 3 scientists employed in the world today state they believe in god..because the evidence exists to back it up..anyone who is smug about their view on life whether atheist or religious should wake up and smell the roses..
@lasciencefan I have to jump in here and say emphatically that atheism is not a faith, it's rather the lack of belief in anything supernatural, I am an atheist, as are you I'm sure, of Apollo, Zeus, Thor etc. So there's no need to question a lack of belief. I merely take it to a logical conclusion that no supernatural entity exists. The opus is on people with a faith to question why their particular faith is correct when all the others are wrong.
@jrtyrrell its whether you believe that order and mindboggling complexity can come about by pure chance or not that is the question everything we know tells us that it is not possible its as simple as that its not about which doctrine or religion is right just whether or not there actually is a god or observer
@jrtyrrell Well it actually is a faith as it claims absolute truth just as much as any other faith does.So atheism is most definately a faith but because atheists have it in their heads that what they believe is certainly the truth they can not see that what they believe is a faith.God can most certainly exist and be responsible for the creation of life as there is no other explanation and if you think that scientists have any clue as to "why" life exists you are sadly mistaken.
Nobody is 100% sure there's a god or not. Anyone who's convinced there is needs to get their head back on their shoulders.
It's not knowledge, it's belief.
In other words, we atheists see the world around us and, judging from what we see, choose to theorize that the concept of god was created synthetically and thus does not exist.
@jrtyrrell Atheism is a faith as it says "i know there is no God" it denies the existance of the human soul it denies the evidence of there being more to life than meets the eye it denies that there is anything more to life than just simple "natural selection and random mutation" when clearly there is something more.Atheism is most certainly a faith mainly driven by emotion not hard evidence
@lasciencefan I would say that Atheism is in fact a 'lack' of faith in any of the mythologies that exist and therefore ultimately decide there's no God, I can't prove there isn't a god and I don't feel the need too, it's simple to see (for me) that there are thousands of gods and mythologies all with different (usually badly translated) stories. Now If any faith can show me that 'evidence' you mentioned I'd be more willing to believe. But none of them ever have, because it just isn't available.
2. No, if anything it under exaggerates it, the evidence that it causes war in the world... Is the sheer number of wars fought over it, or have been influenced by it. It happens to this day. To say it exaggerates is an insult to the MILLIONS who have lost their lives.
3.Why can't it be compared to the FSM, there is just as much evidence for either.
@xSolraccarloSx the place where a lot of people trip up when thinking about if there is a god or not is expecting that "god" to be just like they would expect him to be using their blind limited intelligence. But to those who actually stop to think about it for longer than 5 seconds can see that the evidence for god is all around us in everything and that anybody who thinks they they "know" otherwise is just kidding themselves. And religion has not caused any wars evil men have caused wars
@lasciencefan 4.(assuming the stat is true) You do realize that relatively few countries have freedom of religion, so for scientists to state they "believe" around the world isn't just unsurprising, it's usually required by law. Look at the stats in countries that DO have freedom of religion, and the overwhelming majority of scientists ALWAYS are Atheist or Agnostic.
5. Wake up and smell the roses? You should. Literally and metaphorically. They're a wonderfully evolved plant...
@xSolraccarloSx Well that isnt so true there are only a handfull of countrys that do not have freedom of religion so the statistics stand true 1 out of 3 scientists state they believe in God and up until capitalism and so called "science" and modern brainwashing 95% of all people believed in God it really shouldnt be such a surprise. And sure i love flowers they are a wonderfully "evolved" plant. But can you tell me how and why nature created them ? i didnt think so
I think that you should revisit the notion of hubris and reconsider what you've said in this video. Because, your attempt at ridiculing Agnostics and thinking that Atheism is a "clean slate" kinda fits that.
Something being dangerous is not a reason not to believe it. Truth might very well be dangerous. No one can be certain that there is no god. Or a flying spaghetti-monster for that matter. It just is very unlikely and we do not have evidence for either entity. Agnostics believe in evidence. Without evidence for something, we do not believe in it. But no accurate person can claim to know for sure. I am an agnostic and i believe in evidence. There is no evidence for any god.
i told my friend im atheist and she keeps calling me emo because she thinks that people who dont believen god must be a sad group of people who are addicted to tokio hotel (not that theyre a bad band) and wear black clothes all the time.
I completely respect your views, but I'D definitely have to say I'll stay true agnostic. But for many quite obvious reasons,I don't believe in the Flying-Spaghetti-Monster. Or at the very least, I'm extremely, extremely sceptic of it :P
#1 Religion is causing war in the world. Really? By cause do you mean single cause? The burden of proof is on you.
#2 Paraphrasing - 'Agnosticism is an invalid position.' Really? So you can falsify the claim of God's existence? You have absolute existential certitude that God does not exist?
#3 Atheism means 'I do not believe in God.' I'm afraid not, that is the etymological definition, yes. But that is not the true definition. You are simply not qualified to dictate definitions.
Atheism comes from a theos meaning "without (belief in) god". So your point number 3 is a moot point.
I agree Agnosticism is a valid position but not on belief itself, you either believe or you don't. Agnosticism is valid as a position on knowledge. To say I do not know, thus I do not believe is an agnostic atheist statement, the two more often then not, go together.
1. Religion is a motivation behind wars, More so when one goes to war in the name of god like many terrorists often do.
I am well aware of the etymological definition. But you have only proved that this is the 'origin' of the word, not it's current 'meaning'. Where is your evidence that this is the actual current universal 'meaning' of the word atheism?
I understand you are using the epistemological definition of the word belief. Belief is binary, yes, but consider this.
Atheist(strong):-I don't believe in God. I believe God does not exist.
Agnostic:-I don't believe in God. I don't belief God does not exist.
"Agnostic:-I don't believe in God. I don't belief God does not exist."
This is wrong, if you don't believe in God, it doesn't matter that you don't believe god doesn't exist, you still do not believe in god, this is Atheist. Agnosticism is about knowledge and having a lack of knowledge to say that you know god exists or not.
Agnostic Atheist - I do not believe in god, there is no evidence either way.
Gnostic Atheist - I do not believe in God, there is evidence that shows he does not.
We have the meaning of Atheism in the current. That is the only evidence on that matter of the meaning. To suggest it means something else requires proof that it ever meant something else.
Atheism was often used as a term by polytheists against monotheists as being godless. But the meaning meant the same, they believes monotheists were without belief in the gods.
You say religion is 'a' motivation behind (certain) wars. I don't have a problem with that.
Back to the definition of atheism, I would say that atheism is an abstract concept packaged with all kinds of beliefs (there is linguistic evidence of this). In this sense it can be said that atheism is also a cause of certain atrocities.
If not, at the very least atheistic ideologies have caused (in a contributory sense) atrocities in the past.
Saying Atheism caused certain atrocities is like saying the non-existant stopwatch in my pocket caused a physical apartment block to collopse. If the stopwatch could hypnotise people that looked at it.
Of course the problem is it is in my pocket and I never take it out so nobody could look at it.
Saying Atheism is responsible or the cause of because ideologies that were atheist caused ideologies is not a fully logical argument.
It's to the same extent that you could say that an ideology that one should walk for an hour every day is also an ideaology that caused the slaughter of thousands that walking is responsible for those deaths.
To my stopwatch example. The ability to hypnotise was never actually a property of the stopwatch but of the pocket. So what hypnotised everybody was people whom looked at my pocket that held at it's centre the stopwatch, the stopwatch was never to blame.
You merely stated 'we have the meaning of atheist in the current.'
Yes, I know you have your definition of atheism, but that doesn't mean that your definition is true. What 'specifically' is your source for this definition?
If we have both already accepted that this is the definition, then for you must prove another defintion before this becomes questionable but I already supplied the information about a theos.
You have only supplied proof for the origin of the word atheist, not proof of it's definition.
There are about half a billion English speakers (1st lang) in the world all speaking on average 120 words a minute, collectively at a rate of about 20 trillion words a day. It is the consensus of this majority which gives the common definition of a word.
Proof of the consensual definition of the word 'atheism' can be found using a concordance generator. A massive database of billions of real life examples of written and spoken language.
Unfortunately the youtube filter won't let me post the url of the concordance generator examples of the word atheism. So I'll have to PM it to you.
You will see 50 examples of the word atheism being used in different ways as an ideological concept, and hardly ever as a simple 'belief in having no belief.'
First off the link you sent me was only quotes that contained the word atheism, not definitations of it, and from what I saw, the whole concept of atheism is undefined by them.
Infact other then one being "mystical atheism" you could still infer no belief in god for the lot of them.
All it takes is a dictionary.
"the doctrine or belief that there is no God"
"disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings."
I do not even know why you bother over 1 simple defintion anyways.
The link showed atheism being used in 50 different ways. Of course many of the samples inferred no belief in God but every example came packaged with other beliefs. That is my point and part of the definitiomn of atheism.
It takes a large sample of the population to define a word clearly.
A definition based on your intuition or the limited data collected by a few scholars of traditional dictionaries is too small a sample to accurately represent the majority consensus of the definition.
But apparently, getting the exact origin of the word also isn't enough huh? So that's Dictionary, Scholars, intuition, the fecking origin and sampling that aren't good enough to define the word so far?
You want to perchance add anymore? As I said, I dunno why you are even going so far over the definition of a word. A single word can mean many things, this is why many words of such importance are described by the person using it, in sense a terminology, some I already gave for the example.
Now let's move on to the word... the, how would you define the word the? the most common language in the English language... it's a very casually used word and the sheer amount of uses of the word around the world per second is insane... and so many people use it differently in so many ways...
P.S. I have used the word the, ten times. can you spot them all?
That is exactly my point, people use it in different ways just like they use love or freedomw in different ways, it is complex, an abstract concept, so perhaps you got the point?
What people use the for doesn't change, yet the ways they use it does. the still means the, it does not mean they are, it just means the. While many words can have multiple meanings, you are yet to supply one for atheism.
Inferring a word could be a description or a concept, evolution was a concept but it's also a description of a process, the concept was of the same process, being referred to as two different things, did not change that meaning.
You misrepresent my argument by inferring that I am saying atheism has a specific definition. It is an abstract concept which needs a lot of unpacking to get anywhere near a definition.
But it is clear that the concept of atheism comes packaged with all kinds of things. It seems clear from the concordance site that for many people, oppression of religious freedom, mass-violence, dictatorship are part of what atheism means.
The abstract concept of atheism comes packaged with such things.
The etymology of a word is the origin of the particles of the word, not it's current definition. For example homophobic does not really mean fear of the genus homo. Etymology does not mean definition.
Neither are words defined individually by ppl the using them, definition in linguistics means the globally accepted definition. You can define black as white if you like, but nobody will understand you.
Also your confusion and inference that I am 'going too far' does not my my argument incorrect.
I would not sample only 4 bears in the wild (which happen to be black), and from such a small sample assert that all bears must be black.
And in the same vein I would not take the loose dictionary definition of a word based on a very small sample and then assert that this is it's true universal definition accepted by the half billion English speakers on the planet.
If I did that I'd be saying that reality is wrong/mistaken and the dictionary is right.
There is a point passed where it's realistic to sample a size of people accurately. And as I have said, it's the origin of the word, and to be honest, I have rarely, if ever seen anybody actually use the word for anything other then for no belief or disbelief in god. So far, I have yet to have even been shown one alternative definition, something I asked previously of you and something you still have not produced. Perhaps there are alternative meanings but until we have one this is pointless.
Exactly 'you'' personally have not seen the word used any other way. Your intuition does not count., you are not qualified, you are like a man sampling one sample of a thousand m&m s and asserting that they must all be green.
I have provided you with several examples of atheism being used as a concept rather than simply a lack of belief.
Also you might want to check wiki for other definitions of atheism.
Wikipedia is easily changed by a single person but currently it has
"Atheism can be either the rejection of theism,[1] or the position that deities do not exist.[2] In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities."
And you still fail to give an alternative definition. "a concept" doesn't cut it as it's an easy retort "I believe in the concept of there being no god" would still be the same as "a theos" just phrased differently.
Also you are the one claiming Atheism means something else, I have laid the burden of proof on you, but all you deliver are things that proves nothing other then you can try multiple avenues with unsuccessfully actually proving anything, because from the start you failed to state exactly how atheism could be inferred and what atheism could also mean.
Again begging the question. I have provided evidence that atheism is an abstract concept. You have provided nothing except your assertion that etymology=definitiion which I have already refuted with my example of the word homophobic.
Wow! That is an extremely biased sample of the wiki page, showing only the part that fits into your argument! Conformation bias.
Also, I am well aware that wiki is not the most accurate source.
Your point begs the question that atheism does have a single definition. I have said that it is an abstract concept, just as the word love or freedom cannot be justified by a single definition.
I have also provided samples of the word being used as a concept.
You afraid that it goes deep are you? Essentially that is what they are, you can make things seem wonderful and mystical, but at the end of the day, we come up with new reasons and explanations for everything. Emotions are a mixture of electronic and chemical impulses in the brain. Knowing what it is does not make it any less powerful over us, we just understand what it is and when ever anybody comes out and says they "love" something they are and can only be talking about their own emotions.
Fair enough. I understand what your points are, about language and about your definition of atheism. I just don't buy into it. I think we'll probably have to agree to disagree and leave it at that. Thanks for your civility and for the discussion.
Feeling so good seeing this vid, most religious people are just brain-washed when they were young. I dont see any difference btw Jesus, Allah, Hilter and Starlin. Most young people are under the influence of their parents, governments or other people around. They are told what to believe.
neocon "The bible is just a manuscript that was written by a man....yada,yada,blah,blah. Don't you God haters have anything new? We believers have been hearing the same weak protests by atheists for years. And the funniest thing you said was that the majority of intellectuals are atheists. LOL! And Kanye West is performing at the Grand Ol Opry next week.
neocon Is assuming things a symptom of your atheism? Who says that I don't read the Koran? Someone lied to you when they told you christians are uneducated and uncultured. If anyone fits that bill, it's your typical atheist, like you. And the reason I believe in God is because of common sense. You actually have more faith than I do. You believe we came from nothing. Random chance. You may as well have said the Earth is flat. And you say I'm not bright?? lol!
Your common sense takes you to a belief in a book, which was written by another human being, that man was created from dust, woman from a rib,god is the creator of all we know & all beings, universes, etc, yet there is also supposed to be a devil, which he obviously had to have created.
What of the other 2500 gods that aren't your Christian god, where did they come from?
Btw,your God may not be American but I guarantee you are.
There have been in excess of 2500 Gods worshipped by man since we walked out of our caves. We,as humans, have always needed simple concise answers to what life is all about.
The bible is just a manuscript that was written by a man who said a god told him the story just like Joseph Smith said an angel come down & gave him gold tablets descibing Jesus adsventures in America.

Well said Micki!! Intelligent and your pretty easy on the eyes hehe.. There really doesn't need to be a big debate here. Either you believe or you don't. I myself need proof. And i have seen none. Every religious debate i get into always ends up in it being a faith thing. That will never work for me personally, because i need to see, hear, touch, smell, feel to believe it. That's it, plain and simple. I'm an Atheist, i deny the existence of God. Now lets go enjoy our lives!!

NoelBlueheart 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart If this is a comment directed at the girl in the video then I think you've gotten it twisted slightly. I think the main point she is putting across is that we should question religion, which is fair enough really. I'm an Atheist simply because I prefer facts and information over the word of some book written thousands of years ago by a group of people who had almost no understanding of how the universe works.
Amernee 6 months ago
@Amernee Questioning religion is great. Even religious people question it. But no, that's not her main point. Her main point was "think like me or you're wrong". If her point was just to question religion, then why did she criticize Agnostics exactly that? As for facts and information, that's bullshit and you know it. Atheism is not based on facts. It's based on subjective, personal opinions like everything else.
NoelBlueheart 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart The thing about the Agnostic's view is that it's a fairly silly one. An Agnostic's view is this; "There's no proof for or against God existing, therefore I believe both are equally probable." The problem with this is that, if this attitude was applied to something like the existence of unicorns - for example - it would be seen as absurd. "There isn't any proof to say unicorns don't exist, therefore you telling me they do leaves me no choice but to remain open to that possibility."
Amernee 6 months ago
@Amernee Firstly, Agnosticism is the most scientific view of all. According to the scientific method which you should have learned in Elementary school, you cannot draw final conclusions without data to draw them on. Since we have no data regarding the existence or nonexistence of God, you should remain indifferent to the both notions as no data means we don't know as of yet. That's Agnosticism.
NoelBlueheart 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart But the point I make is that when anyone makes a claim of any sort, the onus is on them to support that claim. If someone claims to have psychic powers, I want proof. If they can't prove it, I don't believe them, no matter how much they argue that they do. Without proof to back that claim up I'm not interested. It's as simple as that.
Amernee 6 months ago
No where in any scientific law or the scientific method does it say anything about burden of proof. Let me ask you a question. Do you hear any scientists saying there is no intelligent life anywhere in the universe but on Earth? You don't. Even though there is no evidence proving the existence of intelligent life there is no evidence disproving it. If a scientist makes the claim that there is no life, he would have to prove it. Claims of nonexistence are also claims.
NoelBlueheart 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart ...That doesn't mean I'm definitely right for thinking the way I do, but the available evidence and research suggests I'm probably more likely to be and that's why my convictions lie where they do. If evidence turned up tomorrow to suggest it is more likely that God does exist then I would be open to that as well, because like I said I go with the information available. I'm not an Atheist just for the sake of it, I think the way I do simply because I prefer logic over blind faith.
Amernee 6 months ago
(cont.2) Your opinion is equally based on faith. Definition of faith: "extreme trust or confidence in something." It has nothing to do with religion. And, please tell, what evidence is there that proves God is unlikely? This ought to be good because I know that is an outright lie. If you don't base your belief on evidence, and lack of evidence is shown to be inconclusive via the scientific method, then what do you base it on? I reckon that's faith.
NoelBlueheart 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart But it isn't. If science can't explain something then I'll remain skeptical about such things. I'll go into more detail and reply to your other comment later as now is not a good time. What I will say is that if you wish to continue this debate you need to drop the attitude, I'm very much open to ideas and am genuinely interested in what you have to say, but not if you're going to be an arsehole about it...
Amernee 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart Going back to this point here, I think my other 2 comments have illustrated my point on why Atheism is not built on faith but rather reliance on the facts at hand. There have been many scientific revelations that have blown claims made in the Bible out of the water - evolution, the fact that the Earth is billions rather than thousands of years old etc. And at the end of the day, non-belief in one thing is not by default faith in another. It begins and ends at the first instance
Amernee 6 months ago
@Amernee There is not one scientific source in this entire universe that has disproved anything written in the Bible. Many great men of history spent their entire lives trying to do just that to no avail.Sir Issac Newton was one only to give in after 50 yrs. How's these names for believers.Webster,Lincoln,Washington,William Bryant,Mark Twain, and even Nepoleon Bonaparte @ Columbus.just to name a few,As for evolution a humming bird ain't never gonna be a peacock.Biblical earth is millions of yrs.
chosenwarior 5 months ago
@chosenwarior The bible says bats are birds. Noah's ark is also structurally impossible.
emikochan13 4 months ago in playlist More videos from PiroNiro
@Amernee As for my non-belief in God being based on facts and information being seen as bullshit..? Why? I see no proof for there being a God, but I do see scientific evidence to suggest that His existence is extremely unlikely. The difference about my opinion on God to that of a religious person's is that mine is an informed one, rather than one based on faith...
Amernee 6 months ago
(cont.) If you believe that in all our current capabilities we can't disprove unicorns, then you're hopeless. I'll do exactly that.
-Unicorns don't appear anywhere in the fossil record as a whole or a link.
-Unicorns originate in short narratives from Europe written for amusement, as fiction, and was never meant to be taken literally as an actual species or animal.
Can you disprove God in this same way? No, you can't.
NoelBlueheart 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart Haha okay let me expand on this. You're absolutely right, because Unicorns don't appear on the fossil record we have to assume that they don't exist. It's the only logical stance to take regarding Unicorns' existence... BUT, what you're forgetting is that Unicorns are magical! If a person claiming Unicorns existed turned round and said this, and told you that when they die, a Unicorn simply disappears into thin air, what scientific evidence could you provide to refute that claim?
Amernee 6 months ago
(cont.) Where does "magical" mean your remains can't fossil? In fact, the early fables of unicorns never had magical powers. If they did, then powers are they? True their horns were said to have the ability heal sickness, but no claims of magic are made. If a person claimed they vanish after denying it won't change anything. You can't change the established nature of a creature to avoid it being disproven. No where in the unicorn myth does it say they vanish upon death. It's a weak argument.
NoelBlueheart 6 months ago
@NoelBlueheart That's quite interesting actually, since unicorns may have originally appeared based on Narwhals horns, and it turns out narwhals are one of the best sources of vitamin C folks living purely off meat (eskimos for ex.), that would cure sickness nicely. I do love tracing the roots of myths ^_^

@RedLetterChristian I disbelieve in a god and it requires no faith, trust me. twilightiefan13 11 months ago
Let's see, in order for an atheist to declare there is no God, the atheist would have to have infinite knowledge of all dimensions to be 100% certain that no God exists anywhere. But only God possesses infinite knowledge. So an atheist would actually have to be God to in order for there not to be a God. Oh I get it.
theabiotictheory 1 year ago
@theabiotictheory there is a flaw in logic with that arguement - because we can only create a conception of God, the concept of infinite knowledge - but using the term ambiguesly doesn't mean there is a God... if that makes sense.
But then an atheist is not in a position to make a claim that there is no God. However, he doesn't make that claim. He just says there is no persuasive arguement or evidence for him to believe in a deity. It is humble, intellectually honest. :)

" You've simply changed your religious faith to a new god - yourself.
revealer007 1 year ago
@revealer007
Also we certainly don't believe we are gods, we simply don't believe in (a) divine being(s).
jrtyrrell 1 year ago
@revealer007 I'm an atheist and I hardly think of myself as a god! That is a one I'v yet to hear. As for atheists wasting time... uhh... isn't going to church a spending time for your religion? Why can't an atheist spend time denouncing it? Also, there needs no convincing of oneself to not believe in god if your an atheist... we already know. :) Once facts overcome fallacies, it's really quite simple.
PFCKurt 1 year ago
@revealer007 The only "faith" I'm adhering to is a way of thinking based on an observation of repeated occurrences and the mechanisms that most logically explain them. I'll admit to that. But inductive logic cannot bring one beyond mere falsifiable theories. And science is the term we use for the application of said logic to the material world. To a limited extent, it works. The truly religious are the ones saying that they KNOW anything beyond this- beyond what a limited human CAN conclude.
aptanalogy 1 year ago
@revealer007 Oh, and atheists generally don't think of the universe in terms of "beings" one way or another because there's no reason to assume they're universally relevant-most atheists converge on a materialist view of reality. This is in contrast to the believer who asserts that: 1) God exists, 2) is on his side 3) He knows the mind of the Creator of the Universe; he believes that God wants very specific things from him (for instance, to cut off parts of his penis or not eat specific foods)

LoveMusic814 1 year ago
Yes, people should have the right to question religion. But it also must be realized that a definitive answer on whether or not God exists (in human, matter, or energy form) will never come to be. There is no way to prove or to disprove the existence of God. All we can go by is what we know, what we think, and how we feel. No ounce of logic can be used to sway towards either position. It must be excepted that we will always wonder how we got here, why we are here, and if there is an afterlife.
MFLuder77 1 year ago
@MFLuder77 Logic? I have to say that I think a scientific explanation is more logical than the idea of a large ever existing entity which floats around everywhere, all the time, just managing to create the entire universe. And then hang around ridiculousing insignificant humans listening to them whine through pray. I just don't buy it. Sorry.
LoveMusic814 1 year ago
@MFLuder77 Logic dictates that one should not assent to a position based on no evidence, and that, when there is a simpler explanation, that explanation is more likely to be true than one which, for example, requires unicorns, UFO's, or imaginary homophobic sky people. Logic also suggests that the people who assert that they DO have knowledge of a supreme intelligence have the burden of proof.

The opus is on people with a faith to question why their particular faith is correct when all the others are wrong.
jrtyrrell 1 year ago
@jrtyrrell its whether you believe that order and mindboggling complexity can come about by pure chance or not that is the question everything we know tells us that it is not possible its as simple as that its not about which doctrine or religion is right just whether or not there actually is a god or observer
lasciencefan 1 year ago
@jrtyrrell Well it actually is a faith as it claims absolute truth just as much as any other faith does.So atheism is most definately a faith but because atheists have it in their heads that what they believe is certainly the truth they can not see that what they believe is a faith.God can most certainly exist and be responsible for the creation of life as there is no other explanation and if you think that scientists have any clue as to "why" life exists you are sadly mistaken.
lasciencefan 1 year ago
@lasciencefan
Faith != Belief
Omegashadowyoshi 1 year ago
@jrtyrrell Atheism is a faith as it says "i know there is no God" it denies the existance of the human soul it denies the evidence of there being more to life than meets the eye it denies that there is anything more to life than just simple "natural selection and random mutation" when clearly there is something more.Atheism is most certainly a faith mainly driven by emotion not hard evidence
lasciencefan 1 year ago
@lasciencefan I would say that Atheism is in fact a 'lack' of faith in any of the mythologies that exist and therefore ultimately decide there's no God, I can't prove there isn't a god and I don't feel the need too, it's simple to see (for me) that there are thousands of gods and mythologies all with different (usually badly translated) stories. Now If any faith can show me that 'evidence' you mentioned I'd be more willing to believe. But none of them ever have, because it just isn't available.
jrtyrrell 1 year ago
@lasciencefan 1. yes.
2. No, if anything it under exaggerates it, the evidence that it causes war in the world... Is the sheer number of wars fought over it, or have been influenced by it. It happens to this day. To say it exaggerates is an insult to the MILLIONS who have lost their lives.
3.Why can't it be compared to the FSM, there is just as much evidence for either.
xSolraccarloSx 1 year ago
@xSolraccarloSx the place where a lot of people trip up when thinking about if there is a god or not is expecting that "god" to be just like they would expect him to be using their blind limited intelligence. But to those who actually stop to think about it for longer than 5 seconds can see that the evidence for god is all around us in everything and that anybody who thinks they they "know" otherwise is just kidding themselves. And religion has not caused any wars evil men have caused wars
lasciencefan 1 year ago
@lasciencefan 4.(assuming the stat is true) You do realize that relatively few countries have freedom of religion, so for scientists to state they "believe" around the world isn't just unsurprising, it's usually required by law. Look at the stats in countries that DO have freedom of religion, and the overwhelming majority of scientists ALWAYS are Atheist or Agnostic.
5. Wake up and smell the roses? You should. Literally and metaphorically. They're a wonderfully evolved plant...
xSolraccarloSx 1 year ago

CrispyGreyMatter 1 year ago
Something being dangerous is not a reason not to believe it. Truth might very well be dangerous. No one can be certain that there is no god. Or a flying spaghetti-monster for that matter. It just is very unlikely and we do not have evidence for either entity. Agnostics believe in evidence. Without evidence for something, we do not believe in it. But no accurate person can claim to know for sure. I am an agnostic and i believe in evidence. There is no evidence for any god.

GodLogic100 2 years ago
Atheism comes from a theos meaning "without (belief in) god". So your point number 3 is a moot point.
I agree Agnosticism is a valid position but not on belief itself, you either believe or you don't. Agnosticism is valid as a position on knowledge. To say I do not know, thus I do not believe is an agnostic atheist statement, the two more often then not, go together.
1. Religion is a motivation behind wars, More so when one goes to war in the name of god like many terrorists often do.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
I am well aware of the etymological definition. But you have only proved that this is the 'origin' of the word, not it's current 'meaning'. Where is your evidence that this is the actual current universal 'meaning' of the word atheism?
I understand you are using the epistemological definition of the word belief. Belief is binary, yes, but consider this.
Atheist(strong):-I don't believe in God. I believe God does not exist.
Agnostic:-I don't believe in God. I don't belief God does not exist.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
"Agnostic:-I don't believe in God. I don't belief God does not exist."
This is wrong, if you don't believe in God, it doesn't matter that you don't believe god doesn't exist, you still do not believe in god, this is Atheist. Agnosticism is about knowledge and having a lack of knowledge to say that you know god exists or not.
Agnostic Atheist - I do not believe in god, there is no evidence either way.
Gnostic Atheist - I do not believe in God, there is evidence that shows he does not.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
We have the meaning of Atheism in the current. That is the only evidence on that matter of the meaning. To suggest it means something else requires proof that it ever meant something else.
Atheism was often used as a term by polytheists against monotheists as being godless. But the meaning meant the same, they believes monotheists were without belief in the gods.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
My point-: 'Agnostic - I don't believe in God. I don't not believe in God.'
Your point - 'Agnostic (Atheist) - I don't believe in God, there is no evidence either way.'
I think we are in agreement.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
Not quite because of the following.
Agnostic Theist - I believe in god but there is no evidence either way.
Most theists are Gnostic but there are still some Agnostic Theists around.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
You say religion is 'a' motivation behind (certain) wars. I don't have a problem with that.
Back to the definition of atheism, I would say that atheism is an abstract concept packaged with all kinds of beliefs (there is linguistic evidence of this). In this sense it can be said that atheism is also a cause of certain atrocities.
If not, at the very least atheistic ideologies have caused (in a contributory sense) atrocities in the past.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
Atheism is just the belief in having no belief.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
It's to the same extent that you could say that an ideology that one should walk for an hour every day is also an ideaology that caused the slaughter of thousands that walking is responsible for those deaths.
To my stopwatch example. The ability to hypnotise was never actually a property of the stopwatch but of the pocket. So what hypnotised everybody was people whom looked at my pocket that held at it's centre the stopwatch, the stopwatch was never to blame.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
'Atheism is just a belief in having no belief'
If that is true then so are all of your points and your stopwatch analogy, but...
You must prove that this is the correct definition. Where is your evidence that this is the correct definition?
GodLogic100 2 years ago
You merely stated 'we have the meaning of atheist in the current.'
Yes, I know you have your definition of atheism, but that doesn't mean that your definition is true. What 'specifically' is your source for this definition?
GodLogic100 2 years ago
If we have both already accepted that this is the definition, then for you must prove another defintion before this becomes questionable but I already supplied the information about a theos.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
You have only supplied proof for the origin of the word atheist, not proof of it's definition.
There are about half a billion English speakers (1st lang) in the world all speaking on average 120 words a minute, collectively at a rate of about 20 trillion words a day. It is the consensus of this majority which gives the common definition of a word.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
Proof of the consensual definition of the word 'atheism' can be found using a concordance generator. A massive database of billions of real life examples of written and spoken language.
Unfortunately the youtube filter won't let me post the url of the concordance generator examples of the word atheism. So I'll have to PM it to you.
You will see 50 examples of the word atheism being used in different ways as an ideological concept, and hardly ever as a simple 'belief in having no belief.'
GodLogic100 2 years ago
Ok, so that is my evidence for the definition of atheism being an 'abstract concept packaged with all kinds of ideology'.
Now it is your turn to provide some valid evidence that the definition of atheism is as you say 'a belief in having no belief.'
GodLogic100 2 years ago
First off the link you sent me was only quotes that contained the word atheism, not definitations of it, and from what I saw, the whole concept of atheism is undefined by them.
Infact other then one being "mystical atheism" you could still infer no belief in god for the lot of them.
All it takes is a dictionary.
"the doctrine or belief that there is no God"
"disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings."
I do not even know why you bother over 1 simple defintion anyways.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
The link showed atheism being used in 50 different ways. Of course many of the samples inferred no belief in God but every example came packaged with other beliefs. That is my point and part of the definitiomn of atheism.
It takes a large sample of the population to define a word clearly.
A definition based on your intuition or the limited data collected by a few scholars of traditional dictionaries is too small a sample to accurately represent the majority consensus of the definition.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
But apparently, getting the exact origin of the word also isn't enough huh? So that's Dictionary, Scholars, intuition, the fecking origin and sampling that aren't good enough to define the word so far?
You want to perchance add anymore? As I said, I dunno why you are even going so far over the definition of a word. A single word can mean many things, this is why many words of such importance are described by the person using it, in sense a terminology, some I already gave for the example.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
Now let's move on to the word... the, how would you define the word the? the most common language in the English language... it's a very casually used word and the sheer amount of uses of the word around the world per second is insane... and so many people use it differently in so many ways...
P.S. I have used the word the, ten times. can you spot them all?
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
btw 'the' has no meaning whatsover, it is like saying what does q or x mean.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
And perhaps you got the point? Just because people use it in different ways, does not effect it's meaning.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
That is exactly my point, people use it in different ways just like they use love or freedomw in different ways, it is complex, an abstract concept, so perhaps you got the point?
GodLogic100 2 years ago
And then you fail again. Being that people use it in different ways, does not stop it being what it is. It is a word, nothing more, nothing less.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
What people use the for doesn't change, yet the ways they use it does. the still means the, it does not mean they are, it just means the. While many words can have multiple meanings, you are yet to supply one for atheism.
Inferring a word could be a description or a concept, evolution was a concept but it's also a description of a process, the concept was of the same process, being referred to as two different things, did not change that meaning.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
You misrepresent my argument by inferring that I am saying atheism has a specific definition. It is an abstract concept which needs a lot of unpacking to get anywhere near a definition.
But it is clear that the concept of atheism comes packaged with all kinds of things. It seems clear from the concordance site that for many people, oppression of religious freedom, mass-violence, dictatorship are part of what atheism means.
The abstract concept of atheism comes packaged with such things.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
By the way, 'the' has no meaning by itself.
Many words have no meaning.
Only lexical items as units of language have meaning by themselves.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
So what?
GodLogic100 2 years ago
The etymology of a word is the origin of the particles of the word, not it's current definition. For example homophobic does not really mean fear of the genus homo. Etymology does not mean definition.
Neither are words defined individually by ppl the using them, definition in linguistics means the globally accepted definition. You can define black as white if you like, but nobody will understand you.
Also your confusion and inference that I am 'going too far' does not my my argument incorrect.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
I would not sample only 4 bears in the wild (which happen to be black), and from such a small sample assert that all bears must be black.
And in the same vein I would not take the loose dictionary definition of a word based on a very small sample and then assert that this is it's true universal definition accepted by the half billion English speakers on the planet.
If I did that I'd be saying that reality is wrong/mistaken and the dictionary is right.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
There is a point passed where it's realistic to sample a size of people accurately. And as I have said, it's the origin of the word, and to be honest, I have rarely, if ever seen anybody actually use the word for anything other then for no belief or disbelief in god. So far, I have yet to have even been shown one alternative definition, something I asked previously of you and something you still have not produced. Perhaps there are alternative meanings but until we have one this is pointless.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
Exactly 'you'' personally have not seen the word used any other way. Your intuition does not count., you are not qualified, you are like a man sampling one sample of a thousand m&m s and asserting that they must all be green.
I have provided you with several examples of atheism being used as a concept rather than simply a lack of belief.
Also you might want to check wiki for other definitions of atheism.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
Wikipedia is easily changed by a single person but currently it has
"Atheism can be either the rejection of theism,[1] or the position that deities do not exist.[2] In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities."
And you still fail to give an alternative definition. "a concept" doesn't cut it as it's an easy retort "I believe in the concept of there being no god" would still be the same as "a theos" just phrased differently.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
Also you are the one claiming Atheism means something else, I have laid the burden of proof on you, but all you deliver are things that proves nothing other then you can try multiple avenues with unsuccessfully actually proving anything, because from the start you failed to state exactly how atheism could be inferred and what atheism could also mean.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
Again begging the question. I have provided evidence that atheism is an abstract concept. You have provided nothing except your assertion that etymology=definitiion which I have already refuted with my example of the word homophobic.
GodLogic100 2 years ago
As I just said.
"I have already shown that being a concept does not change it's meaning or definition."
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
GodLogic100 2 years ago
Love is just a description of emotion, freedom is the state of having been freed in some method.
I have already shown that being a concept does not change it's meaning or definition.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
So your definition of love is 'the description of an emotion'.
And your definition of freedom os 'the state of being freed'.?
I am afraid it goes 'much deeper than that.'
GodLogic100 2 years ago
You afraid that it goes deep are you? Essentially that is what they are, you can make things seem wonderful and mystical, but at the end of the day, we come up with new reasons and explanations for everything. Emotions are a mixture of electronic and chemical impulses in the brain. Knowing what it is does not make it any less powerful over us, we just understand what it is and when ever anybody comes out and says they "love" something they are and can only be talking about their own emotions.
DoomsdayR3sistance 2 years ago
Fair enough. I understand what your points are, about language and about your definition of atheism. I just don't buy into it. I think we'll probably have to agree to disagree and leave it at that. Thanks for your civility and for the discussion.

neocon Is assuming things a symptom of your atheism? Who says that I don't read the Koran? Someone lied to you when they told you christians are uneducated and uncultured. Your common sense takes you to a belief in a book, which was written by another human being, that man was created from dust, woman from a rib,god is the creator of all we know & all beings, universes, etc, yet there is also supposed to be a devil, which he obviously had to have created.
