To answer your question, it just got lucky, that's all. There's many shows that got its own version in many countries. Some totally failed for some reason and others became successful for some other reason. American idol are some of the fortunate ones to become successful.
What's X Factor about? Is that like a "survivor"ish kind of a show. I'm not fond of those kind=P

Oh that reminds me. There was another show in U.S. where a bunch of people live in the same camera-filled house(Like "Big Brother") where they compete through singing and being given singing lessons or something. That show was cancelled immediately because people thought it was a rip off of American Idol(Even though both shows aren't U.S.'s original ideas). i've been born and lived in australia all my life, but this holidays im going to london (long story), im pretty sure its a wonderful place, but i honestly can't invision myself anywhere else but here, i love being australian, and im 100% proud of who i am and the best counrty ever *cough*australia*cough* so be proud to be aussie, cause im damn sure i am!

They tried to have the X factor here in Australia, but it was the most unpopular show of the year, they cut it shorter so they could end it quickly and put something else on, im surprised its popular in england to be honest its a shitty show, but then again so is idol lol
