U guys say all tennis players are the same now with the baseline banging but IMO tennis was kinda the same back then too. everyone charged the net and the points were ended too quickly. it's a little boring going to the net every single time.
Tennis now-days has lost a shot called "cheap 'n' charge" and that is shame for such a beautiful game that tennis is. Now-days we have couple of players playing good volleys like Federer, Stepanek, Llodra, Karlovic and Ancic. But real serve and volley player doesn't exist anymore...like you said - players are now one-dimensional, all are big servers, serving way faster than 200 km/h, all big hitters with same tactic...Awful for this game...
Totally agree with you about the lack of variety in the game. Its really a shame, because everyone pretty much plays the same, and without those contrasts of styles, to me, the matches are far less interesting.
On grass its especially sad. The grass courts these days are so good and true that there isnt that need to go to the net and take a ball in the air, rather than risk a bad bounce.
Sadly, I dont see things changing for awhile, and tennis might forever be a game of baseline banging.
I have been watching tennis since 1985, the Becker boom in Germany. But I really say, that I prefer Nadal and Federer over Becker and Stich. The level is much higher and more intense. There is no chip and charge, coz the returns and passing shots are simply too good. With the new strings and rackets the pros can create extreme angels from the baseline which were at Beckers days only possible from net position. However, I miss this poker game element today. In that aspect, I do agree.
omg, how i miss both of them on the court and the tour. all those boring, one-dimensional fellas nowadays... sure, federer plays absolutely stunning, beautiful, powerful tennis and is great guy, but come on... look at becker gesticulating, screaming, going through all the emotions on the court. those two, big mac, leconte, ivanisevic, courier... they were personalities, not tennis machines.
@bakkagaijin76 Agree with you. Berdych, Roddich, Djokovic, Murray , Søderling, Davidenko ectc ...I cant tell the difference in their playing style. Nadal And Federer have their own style...but tennis has been boring the last 5-6 years in particular.
If you want to see Becker at his best, 1995 Wimbeldon Semis vs Agassi (Pirate). Becker lost the first set and Agassi was red hot. But the 2nd set Becker came roaring back and won convincingly in 4 Sets.. If it was ad out (Becker serving), Becker would hit an ace.... BOOM BOOM! Precision serve and volley, just a thing of beauty. Big Becker would easilly match Agassi in baseline ralleys. He choked in the finals against Sampras. His first serve % was only 25%.... He choked!
cool Andre had a 'come ooon!' McEnroe moment there!!! Agassi was the underdog in this tournament..I didn't realise how low he was in the seeding. Becker understandably 4th seed with his brilliance in that whole decade 1985-95.
becker and edberg both lost in tough 5 set matches in the quarters here and then in 93 they both lost in the semifinals, but they were great players and i wish their style would come back again all the players today are one dimensional and boring.
unbelievable returning from the master. The courts were lightning quick back then and yet he was still able to beat some great serve volleyers at the time when no one else would of. A legend.
Best returner of all time imo. It's what made Agassi so interesting to watch...he didn't have a big serve, BUT he could always, ALWAYS attack the opponent's serve. Most entertaining player of the modern era.
It is so "inappropriate" that Nadal won Wilbledon. Here we are in 1992 where the courts were still lightning fast and we have Agassi defeating McEnroe, Becker and Ivanisevic, top grass court players on their own turf. amazing. Now wimbledon is 50% slower, serve volley non existant... Of course there is Federer, but generally it's a different universe. And how can you compare this stuff?
Agassi said, "I will never lose to Becker again" and he didn't :)

No, that's not her. Agassi was hanging around with someone else that time but I don't remember her name.

This match was awesome. Lendl could never beat Becker at Wimbledon. But Agassi did.
BuddhaShiva1 1 year ago 3
Agassi was playing his game, from the baseline, Lendl was making a mistake, coming too much to the net.

it's incredible the power of the baseline play of Agassi, and the inability of the net play of Becker
