  • G'day Roby, I love your work, can you tell me what type of board/paper you prefer to use

    Cheers

  • @derksify Hello! Thank you for your nice comment! I am using Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum 10 ply paper. I get it at Dick Blick on-line. :)) Roby

  • ps....I meant Roberta, not Rob!

  • Like I said about the Carbs color selection, you will need the whole set to find out what colors are what. You'll find that you use some of the colors way more than others so that's why I buy each color by the box and it's cheaper that way. Black, White, Light yellow are the most used for what I do. It's all about blending the colors in a small circular motion, my egg video shows that pretty well. You just have to try the brands out. Experiment and have fun!!!

  • thanks so much Rob..I'm gonna order one pencil each of the 4 brands to see if I have a preference in the way they feel. By the way, is the X-Acto powerhouse a manual sharpener or electric?

  • @porrilaster Hi, it's Roby short for Roberta :)) pronounced Row-b. It would probably benefit you to get the same color or two colors for each brand you select because you'll find that the pastels texture differ a bit from color to color. You 'll probably end up using all of them anyway even after you pick your favorite. That way you can really compare each color from each brand. The X-ACTO is electric. You'll need an awl or ice pick to dig out the chalk, it breaks off when the blades get dull.

  • I purchased the entire set of Carbo's because the colors on the monitor don't really match up when you have it in hand & when you go to reorder you have to know the # on the pencil. There is no reference to color on the pencil. They don't have a big selection of flesh tones but you can achieve flesh by blending the light flesh with the Ochre or Umber. They blend beautifully with the sticks. I do eye's entirely with the pencils. You need to experiement to find what you like, it's a personal thing.

  • on dickblick it looks like CarbOthello, Derwent, FaberCastell Pitt & Cretacolor pencils ALL come in sets AND as open stock...the Carbs & Fabers only come in sets of 60, the Derwents & Cretacolors come in sets of 72. The range of colors is MORE important than the number of colors. Do the Carbs have a good selection of colors? I'm very interested in doing portraits, but the Carbs don't appear to have alot of flesh tones. Also, I must be able to use the pencils with my soft pastels.

  • Hello! I will recommend to you the CarbOthello pastel pencils as my first choice for the following reasons. First and formost that they are lightfast. Check out the little stars on the pencil, the more stars the more LF they are. I like that they are open stock so you can buy one at a time or by the box. The others you have to buy the set.Carbs are smooth and blend well. Derwents are fine too but they don't fit my favorite sharpener X-ACTO powerhouse very well. Conte Paris are a no go, grit!

  • Hi Rob...I am in the process of trying to decide which set of pastel pencils to get. The three sets I am interested in are Faber Castelle, Carb Othello, Cretacolor and Derwent. The Derwent is appealing because it has the widest color selection, but I still want to choose the highest quality. Have you had experience with all of these pencils? Which are your favorite and why?

  • This is amazing, I did not know what a ringneck pheasant was until I took a look at this speeddrawing!! The way you made the bird in its natural habitat like that, adding the scenes and grasses made it like a photograph. You are an amazing artist, and you defiantly are my favorite!!

    Ashley :)
