  • @3dpromusic No problem, glad to have contributed.

  • Can you move a copy of automation to a different track? I'm writing for horns (in GarageBand, which also allows copying automation to the same track). I decided to split a chord into two tracks so I can have trumpets play the top half and saxes play the bottom. I lost the automation when I duplicated the track and copied the midi notes. I may switch to Logic, but I want to see if that automation can be copied to other tracks - also it might help me figure out if GarageBand can do that too.

  • @calism23 Automation can definitely be copied to a new track, I made a video "Logic Pro Copy automation to a new track" which you'll find on my channel. That should give you an idea of what's involved. Hope that helps.

    James

  • brilliant, thanks very much :)

  • I have a question, I have numerous automation I wish to move, Problem is the automation is on software instrument channels, I wish to copy the automation to a new audio track.. Any help = GREAT=)

  • @HDStudioproductionz I noticed your other comment, so I know you're sorted. But in case this comes up again I've made another video called Copy Automation To A New Track, which covers that topic.

    James

  • Thanks James as always your the best=)

  • @HDStudioproductionz Thanks, glad you found the tutorial useful.

    James

  • You smashed it in the fanny lol (pardon my crudeness its 5am and i'm automating for the first time)

    Thanks for posting

  • @ArGyProductions Crudeness excused! Thanks for the comment.

    James

  • 1 small question: In your third track with the green automation data your lines are like 'not straight'. How do you do that? Thanks!

  • @satanisback Hi thanks for the question, I've made a quick video demonstrating, it just needs editing before it's uploaded. Keep an eye on my channel it should be up this week.

    James

  • These screencasts are incredibly helpful, and your delivery is fantastic. I just have one question: Can you copy a section of automation to a different track? For instance, let's say I have 8 audio tracks and all of them need the same automation in one section (but need *different* automation in different sections), and I've already entered it into the first track. Do I just have to input the automation 7 more times or is there a way to copy it? Thanks for the great videos!

  • @StevenLamphear Hi Steven, I've covered copying automation to new track in a video, you can find it on my YouTube channel it's called "Logic Pro Copy Automation To A New Track" but if I had 8 tracks that I know will all require the same automation I'd make a group for these tracks before I wrote automation, then they'd all get the same automation from the get go.

    Hope that helps.

    James

  • this was so fucking useless

  • You are officially my hero. Ta very much for this.

  • @Fulc Thanks for that !! I shall have some kind of badge of office made, seriously though glad you liked the video.

  • @22RecordsInc You're very welcome, James

  • This has troubled me for a while. Thank you very much james!

  • @nogeninnit Cool, glad to help.

    James

  • Awesome! - perfect - thanks so much for putting this up :-)

  • @lavaflo Thanks for getting in touch, I'm pleased you liked the video.

    James

  • Great vid, but for some reason it doesnt work for me. I use the automation select tool and I'm able to mark the automation nodes, but there is no black shadow and I can't move anything or even copy it. How come?

  • @pieflexer Sorry you've got me stumped, the instructions in the video work, as you can see from the video but that obviously doesn't help. The only thing I can suggest is create a new project with all new parts and automation, give that a try and we'll know if it's specific to that project or is a global problem.

Let me know how you get on ?

    James

  • How can I copy the automation from one parameter to another? I.e. say I want to copy the aux send automation from track 1 and replicate it for the test oscillator frequency control automation

  • @binkhalidsonic Hi, I think this justifies another video, it'll take longer to type the instructions than make a video.

All joking aside it's a good topic and needs covering, keep an eye out and I'll get to it in the near future.

    James

  • great video. Thank you!

  • @jonnybwoy Thanks for taking the time to comment, glad you liked it.

    James

  • hey james,

understood. i could not agree more.

    g

  • so this is the 4th vid i have watched about copying automation.

not one of the other vids mentioned the option key as part of the method.

people seemed to post all kinds of crazy shortcuts, methods and ridiculous means of simply copying automation.

thank you so much james for not only the "right" information, but as well, making so easy to see and understand. god, it is actually so simple as most things are when you know how it is done properly.

    g

    nyc

  • @grg1540 Thanks for the kind words !! I don't know about the "right way" I'm always in search of the easiest or quickest way. It's both the blessing and the curse of modern DAWs that there's so many ways of achieving the same outcome, that's why I try keep my comments in subjective terms.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

    James

  • Thanks for this, it's a helpful and succinct explanation!

    Neil.

  • @smallridge1 Hi Neil, thanks for taking the time to comment, it's appreciated, glad you liked the video.

    James

  • @Gudasonen Nothing off the top off my head, have you tries using the Automation Select Tool ?

    James

  • hi.was wondering how you get the muted in and out effect..i think its the blue automation.thanks

  • @asianbabesuk It's the mute button on the channel automated in a vaguely musical fashion. So same technique as automating anything else in Logic but the mute switching on and off in ( from memory ) a sixteenths pattern.

I've done a bunch of videos on automation, so they should lead you through it.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir nice 1 thanks for your help:)

  • @asianbabesuk Glad to.

    James

  • CHEERS!! Bloody CHEERS!! v useful

  • @jomokariuki Cheers !! Glad it was helpful.

    James

  • If you move regions and want your automation to move with it you must click on logic>preferences>automation> and set "move automations with regions".

It took me ages to figure how to do this. so now i can move the whole project with all the automation attached!!

  • @AndyGoo Hi Andy, it should be set like that by default, so most users won't have to go into the preferences. Unless you've accidentally changed it in the past. I sort of covered this topic in my Automation Preferences video.

    James

  • How to copy ALL automation in same time (2 or 3 line)? it's possible or what?

    Thank you

  • @SaddenTrap Yes it is, I cover how to do that in my video called

Logic Pro, Copy and Move Automation

You need to watch it from about three minutes onwards, apologies in advance the Screencast software had a glitch, but I think the technique is clear. Let me know if that helps ?

    James

  • @SaddenTrap Sorry I gave you the wrong video name, it's in Logic Pro Copy automation to a new track.

    James

  • Thanks for getting in touch, glad you found it useful.

    James

  • Very useful and concise, thanks. :)

  • brilliant as usual James! Thanks!!

  • @zacanowski You're too kind. James

  • How would I copy inserts (Eq, reverb etc)from one track to the next?

    Thanks

  • @HOODYWOODRECORDS

Spooky, I was going to do a tutorial on this !! I'll do this one next, keep an eye out for it.

    James

  • Fab! Nice, simple and thorough.

  • @TreyRoque I'm glad you enjoyed it, thanks for getting in touch.

    James

  • it used to ask me if i wanted to copy or not copy the automation every time a was copying a sample . . . now i don't get that option and it's really frustrating. any help? :(

  • @chrisdavidi Hi, you should take a look at the newest video, if I'm right in my guess as to what's happened it should solve your problem. I'll send you a message with the link.

    James

  • Wow!!! Thanks, this helps out! =)

  • you are a life saver! thank you so much

  • @axlrod05 Thanks for the comment, good to know the video helped.

    James

  • @axlrod05 Thanks for getting in touch, glad you liked the vid.

    James

  • Thanks a lot !!

You should subscribe, there's more to come.

    James

  • nice video, what are some good pluggins for mixers chanells. like effects.

also how do you bring samples into the logic library.. wave form samples not aiff.

  • Hi Marco

What kind of thing are you looking for effects wise ? Mixing effects like compression, eq and gates ? Or effects like reverbs and delays ?

In answer to your second question I'm afraid there's more questions, when you say Wave samples do you mean files ending .wav ? And by adding them to the library do you want them in the loop browser ?

Give us a bit more detail ? And I'll do my best to answer.

    James

  • Sorry Marco. I should have added in reference to the plug-ins are you looking for free, budget end or do you have a bit of budget to play with ?

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir

well i have a lot of compresors and eq stuff.

maybe i dunno something nice for vocals

  • Ok, I'll think about the best way to do that, keep an eye out, it may not be immediate but I'll get to it eventually.

    James

  • Really good tutorials James!! Keep them coming

  • Thanks for getting in touch, they'll be more tutorials in the New Year. Once I'm over my hangover !!

    James

  • lol, happy new year

  • Thanks! I didn't know it was so simple.

  • Thanks for getting in touch, all this stuff is simple when you know how to do it. Unfortunately 'til then it's quite complicated.

    James

  • I love you james

  • The feeling's mutual !! Thanks for taking the time to get in touch.

    James

  • Thanks, loved it!!

  • Brilliant, thanks for getting in touch.
