listen im not even a sheryl crow fan, but im a fan of great music and when i heard this joint i felt it in my soul! This song will make me listen to sheryl crow now! I DO WHAT I CAN, WORK FOR A LIVING CUZ THATS WHO I AM!
This is also my favorite songs by Ms.Crow. As a student of music this piece of music impresses me with the interesting time signature changes in the middle of the song....thanks so much for posting this here,it's not an easy song to find!
Sheryl Crow is the most underated singer on Earth. Most of today's kids have no clue. This song is brilliant, I rate it number two with Always On Your Side 1 and Wildflower 3........But what do I know......
The Credits leave out an important person - Wendell Crow ( Sheryl's father, the person the song is written about) plays the quiet, laid back trumpet. Dr. Leo Benson was a trombone player and close family friend that passed away in several years ago. He and Leo played jazz together.
As I listen to this, there was one huge regret I ever made. The fact that I'm Leo, I probably should have died. But like a coward; a coward dies a million deaths, compared to a soldier who dies but once. In some ways, I wish I could take back what happened or at least did something different in my past. Maybe, there's such a thing called a second chance. Or I could be just fooling myself. (scoffs and shakes head)
To crysinorblue ~ There's always second chances. Life is for learning, regrets are a natural part of that. We do what we can, no one can do more than that. Keep on keeping on.... ☼ ;-j
@crysinorblue much as I want to agree w el groover, sometimes opportunity presents itself only once and the window closes. I know this well...You aren't the only one with regrets.
@crysinorblue ya know.. I remember 15 years ago listening to THIS song and thinking to myself.. "how sad". But now, all these years later, I am RELATING to this song and I just want to say LEO, Thank you. For a very valuable lesson. I would have never known how much I could love if it wasn't for you. However, I promise, I will never love like that again. If only for my own sake. Shew!!!
@jovanna242 i feel exactly the same way. every time she puts out a new cd i hope that it's as good as her first but not so far. i've seen her in concert 4 times and she's never done this song. it's a shame.
@jovanna242 Totally - I still have that tape buried somewhere in my parents' house. One of my favourite songs; a shame she don't make em like this anymore.
Even if you're not a Sheryl Crow fan, you can't deny that this song is incredible... She wrote it to honor her father, who was a jazz musician, shortly after his death. One of my favorite songs of all time; the things she does with the tempo are so creative...
@jennyes61969 : It can't have been written after his death, since he's playing the trumpet part on this recording! =:o} Sometimes people remember to honour their parents *before* its too late...
i just saw her do a benefit concert for the nature conservancy on monday. she was great but i've never seen her perform this song live. i have no idea why.
This is my favorite Sheryl Crow song; it's so beautiful. It's about the place we all have to get to in life. Life can't be lived for tomorrow or yesterday, since that only brings regret, longing, or a fantasy of hope. It's all about now and what we have in the everpresent and real now.

She's got a decent voice but she didn't write these songs. Her boyfriend Kevin Gilbert did-right before she fucked him over, ruined his life, and he committed suicide. He was THE reason she had a career, and he was the talent. Rest in Peace, Kevin.
It was instantly blocked on upload by a copyright claim from UMG. So although I uploaded it back in February, its only been audible 4 the last week or so. I've never known blocked uploads to be 'rolled back' as UMG have done in this case. Some other songs of theirs previously blocked have suddenly gone 'live'. Good stuff & good sense from UMG to have their music heard. The more ears it reaches, ultimately the more sales they'll make. WMG on the other hand still have much 2 learn in this respect.
My all time favorite too!!!!!

I really wish there was a B sides for Ms. Crow to bless our life with. Do you even know, Ms. Crow, how this song made me forgive, breathe, and live!
Thank You! This is a triumph over the times and happenings of people every where.
Ever thought about cutting a record with Amiee Mann? "Wise up" is another soul warmer.

If you hadn't heard this before then you're been missing out on a fine album. 'Saturday Night Music Club' has many good songs...
I'm not certain, but I don't think she made a video of this number.
