this song is so cool. I heard it on Guitar on the edge vol. 4 which has a lot of shredders on it. Though this isnt a shred tune, watching him play it i'm thinking "holy sheet!" To be able to switch back and forth from chords to riffs and paint so many different vibes is incredible. wayne rocks!
ya know, I have heard of wayne krantz for years, but he never came to forefront with jazz rock groups I have been listening to, like Tribal Tech, and Di meola. or maybe I have not been listening that well.
I got to see him at the 55 with Cliff Almond. James Genus was late so the first set was just Wayne sparring with Cliff. Normally I would have been disappointed, but in this case...
Good question. I'm not sure. I read an interview with him in Guitar Player magazine and all he says is his single coils are Suhr singles and his bridge is a Seymour Duncan Full Shred.
That guitar was made from parts at Rudy's in NYC, and put together by Stephen Marchione. Wayne told me he just went in, picked a body and neck he liked, and had Stephen put it together.
He's a monster for sure, but remember that he did record this stuff on the album with Wayne. I'd say he's got the charts there as more of a refresher, since he does so many gigs with different artists.
This stuff is WAAAYYY too out there to tab, and it'd be pointless to learn this from tab anyway, as the essence is to improvise and develop your ear, not just regurgitate a bunch of memorized licks.
@RisingForce420 Tabbing it is definitely possible, definitely enjoyable and definitely worth the effort! Regarding the "out there" factor, Schoenberg is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY out there and guess what? it has been entirely written from scratch...
If u read music, u can go to his website and buy the music to this song. He hand wrote all the music to this whole album 'Long to be Loose', and sells it on the website. You won't get the solo section because it's improvised, u know, the parts where he's playing mostly single note lines.
Wow. Feisty too!! Some would call you a jazz snob. Jazz is truly a lost art in this day and age of horribly plastic American Idol pop, shitty hip-hop, and every other manufactured flavor-of-the-month drivel coming from the major labels. But you already know that. . .
Another 'yank' here to second that opinion. If assholes like ashlee simpson didn't make tens of millions of dollars, allan holdsworth would have a chance to make more sales and money. And then music wouldn't be such an excellent tool used to dumb down the vast majority of the populace. Is it as bad across the pond?
Well where I live in Wales (i'm not going to say where because you never know lol) there is quite a good jazz society, but it still needs to be promoted more. I play sax and there is quite a good group of young people who are really inspired by jazz, and really want to get somwhere. But I think it's the same everywhere, where people just like certain things because it gives them a 'nice' image.
Damn right. As an aspiring (british)jazz musician there are days when I wanna top me-self cos of this sad state of affairs! It can be a fucking lonely experience being a jazz fan, especially when you truly believe that it's the only kind of music that inspires true creation. Essentially people are afraid of things they don't understand. I didn't understand Thelonious Monk when I first heard him - but I persevered and could I now do without his music in my life? Could I F**k?!!
Looks like the best way to get lots of money in the music industry is being fake *cough* *ashley simpson* *cough*
But what's the point in being fake and earning shit loads of money? All for what? Personaly i'd rather get somwhere, doing something I enjoy and am passionate about. It's what some parts of Jazz is about really.
I agree that ashlee simpson is completely pathetic. There are few okay metal instances (King Crimson anyone?), and one guy who I respect even though he was initially a conventional metal guy is guitarist Alex Skolnick of Testament, who did 3 albums with them and then took his money to attend the New School in New York, which led to his semi-popular Jazz Career. Also, I'm a studying jazz guitarist out in California, so I'm quite lonely musically :(. Good luck with all of your pursuits.
Wow, he wrote much more of his stuff back then. Now it's way more open. He just shouts out a key, Anthony Jackson goes there, he shouts out a metric modulation and Ari Hoenig goes there. Both concepts are cool.
hey rockstarboy420, you clearly have no musical knowledge whatsoever because if you think this elaborate display of melodic jazz is sickening. i bet half of the guitarists you like have done numerous jazz workshops. appreciate the roots, jeez.
never been too into Weckl, though I can't appreciate him enough for his dedication and talent- However, Zach Danziger blows my damn mind especially on 2 drink minimum
Good luck on that one. His playing is so symmetrical and compact though that once you sit down and start figuring it out, you can't believe how neatly it lays on guitar. Get a looper and some tab/staff paper. I don't worry so much about the time values; write down the fingerings (fret/string) and play through it a few times. You'll memorize the phrasing.
Learn it in little bits. Sometimes I need to do a half second loop and slow it down to get the chord voicing.
I know what you mean man. That's why there are no tabs for the man, his playing is beyond technical. I've tried so many times to emulate and tab out some of his "signals" album, but i failed every time.
He's got an unsurpassed knowledge of the neck, and he's endlessly creative.
The way his parts lay on the guitar is remarkably efficient, particulary with regard to how he often combines rhythmic parts with single note lines (good example is the main theme on Dream Called Love on Two Drink).
I'm working on some tunes from Two Drink--you might have better luck with this (being a live trio recording).
It's insane. Try learning stuff from long to be loose. Like track 3.....incredible and very hard to play. But when you try to learn his stuff, you really start to see just how complex and amazing his compositions are. One of my favorite parts is 4:46 to 5:04 on track 6. It's unbelievable. I just don't understand it, harmonically, especially. Amazing.

yeah man hes killin ive seen him at the 55 too, unfortunately he sent out an email recently that said he wont be playing there anymore due to a close death. also he does play a strat but he plays some "tyler" guitar that looks exactly like a strat, i think the tyler sounds better though.
Excellent clip... I used to go to the 55 bar when they were recording the 2 drink minimun CD, at that time I was also studying with Zach...great memories from those days back in 1995...
I lived in NY in the late 80's/early 90's, and after i saw him play with Leni Stern one night, i asked for lessons. Since i could afford it at the time, i studied with him on and off for 5 years- totally inspiring and knowledgeable, he was a great teacher.
I've watched this 8 times. His lines are really modern and it reminds of a phenomen if you write a paragraph and scramble the inner letters but leave the outside ones creative people can still read it. He creates a context of rock, funk fusion but his inner voicings are new to this world. IN my mind that makes him an original genius.

The question is... What kind of amp is he playing through and what effects does he use to get that chunky twang... There's some meat on that twang!
johnnylance 1 year ago
@johnnylance Back then he was doing the whole nothing but amp tone thing so he was just playing straight through a deluxe reverb I think.
Fishies125 1 year ago
@johnnylance
most of that may lie in the way he picks and the fact he's playing a guitar with single coils/maple neck referring to the "twang"
mother fucker does use mad effects though
