just by looking at these video clips, I feel that this behaviour is not from God. Why would God cause us to go out of ourselves and behave so uncontrollably, a way that would scare, turn off an unbeliever who's visiting a church. All that rolling around and yelping and babbling is so unnecessary. It's chaotic, the opposite of what God wants us to be..people who value self-control
This is a pretty funny video,i don't care what they're doing,if they think gods making them do it,fine...it's nothing to do with the holy spirit in them making them be goofballs,it's there own trip..yes that's my own opinion...slain in the spirit and falling back? hogwash man.i been there..if your truly free in Christ, good,go do a belly flop in a mud puddle screaming praise the lord, or masturbate and say praise the lord for my right hand..for there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus!
A non believer will only be convinced that perhaps God is at work if someone amazingly starts to speak a known language that they have never learned. This would be solid evidence as a sign or miracle.
However, jumping around and making silly noises is hardly a sign and can be imitated by anybody. So easily forged is the tongues today. A believer in an almighty God would expect he is so much more capable of revelation than this lunacy.
I think the videos show more of the extremes in the movement. However, overall its no different. I have visited a Pentacostal church and watched them speak in tongues quietly and then a translation was given. The problem the message is referring to however is that the true gift of tongues is always in another real language not "bata bata bata"
@pharmfarm59538 Could you please explain the distinction, because there would appear to be no reason to have one. If you look at the word it is "tounges' as in different languages. I can only assume you are trying to use 1:14 in which it says no one understands him; he speaks to God. Yet, right below that he says that someone can interpret, but it is useless unless someone does. Clearly he is talking about real languages. Continued.
@pharmfarm59538 In the same chapter, he says some will understand and other will not. And if unbelievers walk in they will see you "out of your mind" because all they here is jiberish is they do not know the language that was being spoken. He also speaks of a tongue. Simple matter is, he is speaking of different languages that people in Corinth do not understand. And he also makes it clear that it is for unbelievers and you have control over the gift.
@adamfelder Clearly the tongues in acts and corninth are different phenomenon. In acts everyone understood the speaker, in corinth no one did. In Acts and interpretor was not needed. In corinth no one understood and and an interpretor was required. In Acts the each person understood it in their own language. In Acts the speaker was speaking to men.In I corinthians the Bible states they are speaking to God, and the result is edification of the person praying, not just communication.
@pharmfarm59538 Edification in what way? If you do not understand what you are saying, how are you edified? Also, he did not say no one anywhere could not understand, he said the people there could not, so they need to have a interpreter present when it is spoken
@adamfelder I would encourage you to use some Biblical helps from intellectually honest scholars to research this. McArthur does not often use experts in Biblical Scholarship or New Testament Greek in interpreting this section. He is out in left field on his own. Intellectual honesty and help from experts are keys in understanding this section. I cannot develop and present the issues enough to satisfy you but edification is the word used in the Holy Scripture. Best wishes and keep learning
@pharmfarm59538 Not from my experience - the Charismatics with their displays of 'spirituality' which after you try to engage with them are clearly pretending. You can fake prophecy & tongues, but not Fellowship.
@pharmfarm59538 Yes, they attempt to - but it becomes very clear very quickly when they are. Fellowship is not the same as being 'nice' or 'friendly', because that requires spending time, & taking interest in, people that aren't perhaps pleasant or 'useful' to oneself - or one's church. Fake Fellowship becomes obviously after a month or so.
@anthonythirteen well, you should come to my church. We will "fake" some tongues. We might have someone "fake" prophecy by telling you stuff about yourself you've never told anyone. Then, you might see some "fake" healing where people with headaches, colds, or broken bones get healed. Then, you might see a "fake" use of the gift of faith, where people get freed from suicide and mental disorders or addictions or anything.
@Gaericon Thanks for the offer. In turn, you should come to churches where the only prophecies come from the same little clique that runs the church (paid staff, ironically) just telling them how great is their church
@anthonythirteen ...where people are "encouraged" to tithe (not accepted unless they do); where the "tongues" are said en masse & not translated (contrary to the teaching of St Paul). I have seen healing, but whether that is God or antiobiotics I'm not so sure.
@Gaericon Don't get me wrong, I've seen what a faithful church can achieve & the immense benefits. However, these were not following the 'Charismatic' emphasis upon 'miraculous events'. Mature believers can manifest all of the above gifts, but it is clear when the immature attempt to practice them.
@anthonythirteen to be honest, the clearest prophecy I've ever heard was from a person who was saved and freed from suidice, then baptized in the Holy Spirit and was a Christian for about 1 hour. She had the same Holy Spirit as I did, but without all the religious crap I've walked around with for 20 years. Truthfully, if you have the Holy Spirit, you're equipped for every good work. Though yes, certainly maturity of actually walking in the Spirit helps, but years "in the Lord" mean nothing.
@Gaericon Yes, certainly one doesn't have to rack up a certain number of years before becoming a 'mature' Christian. I've met plenty who've been baptised for decades & are clearly very immature. Sadly, some of these have been pastors & elders: both in conservative churches but also in 'radical' charismatic. The former tend to ignore the Holy Spirit, the latter think all 'spirits' are 'Holy'.
@Gaericon you have excepted a counterfit experience. When a church is dead that is when they look for an experience. If you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, TITHE!
mysteriously satan prevents them from getting hurt. satans greatest deception he prospers many of his ministers and he makes continual fools many mostly thru music abilities..he was chior director in heaven
@Remogogy Cleary the videos do not depict the normalative church service. McArthur wishes to show the extremes and the fake and present it as normal. Is that honest?
@pharmfarm59538 MacArthur did not make the video in all honesty. And as I said, I think the person who made the video is showing the extremes, but Johns point is still the same. I think tongues is a secondary issue personally, but I mean that in the context of the real gift of speaking in "tongues"
@Remogogy There are records of the Wesleyn revivals....actually a diary by either John or Charles Wesley where some of the woshipers broke thier necks while being slain in the spirit and falling down and having seizure like movements. Of course this is several hundred years ago, but there is no reason a person could not be injured today.

When David danced before the Lord WITH ALL HIS MIGHT PRACTICALLY NAKED, was he being a fake too? God forbid people start dancing like David for God.

@adamfelder In Acts the gift of tongues is a real language, but in I Cor it clearly is not. There are two kinds of tongues in the bible.
