  • 5: Sadly you look like you are sawing his mouth too

  • the important thing is you guys had fun <3 you guys look great! <3

  • I made this test in my country too. But I rode a thoroughbred :)) ... I can't forget that test :))

  • I don't think any of you others would make this look perfect. Your horse looks calm and not tightened up (like most of the dressagehorses in competition do) and your description says everything... I have seen much more worse than this and after all, this wasn't so bad. It would have looked much more worse with Anky on the top. :)

  • I think it is great to try new disaplines and everyone was not born piaffing and pirouetting so you know they all looked shit when they started lol

Don't let anyone discourage you from riding because in the end it is just you and your horse out there no one else matters.

Dressage was created to supple these big breeds of horses when cavalry was needed way back when. So really your just kicking it old school :-)

  • nice horse well done but could you have done rising trot might have looked better ?

  • Pretty horse

  • That was dressage?

  • Not bad at all! Can't expect you to ride like a grand prix rider at 1 leve :) I think you did ride him quite well! Well done one a horse like that! :)

  • better than I could do!

  • It wasn't a horrible 1st level test. I found both you and Shire pleasant and charming in your efforts. I'll bet you've been working hard and enjoying each other since this was taken, and I wish you both well.

  • maybe not perfect, but you know what, this horse is pretty cool and not stressed or something like that,so well done

  • I think you've done a fantastic job! Some horses are just naturally harder to sit to then others. In the end as most of the other comments have said. It's just practice!

  • @major3001 so not true...

  • @NerdyJesus101 What do you mean not true?

  • @major3001 she hasn't done a fantastic job...

  • @NerdyJesus101 Well I think she did so have a cry? Shire's aren't always easy to sit to. She said she hadn't any idea what she was doing, therefore what she produced was pretty great really! So yeah :)

  • @major3001 if she had no idea what she was doing why is she doing it in the first place?

  • @NerdyJesus101 because it's fun to try different diciplines... stop being so up yourself. You don't have to be perfect at everything just so long as you and your horse enjoy youselves...

  • @xXxChristinexXxX i have to agree on that because me and my new forest have done EVERY thing you can imagine and she wasnt great at it all but she gave it her all!

  • @xXxChristinexXxX i didn't say that it has to be perfect...did i??

  • @NerdyJesus101 no but you made it sound like it does...

  • @xXxChristinexXxX not really....

  • i could NEVER master a dressage seat...the legs always threw me off and i couldn't get my seat balanced enough to really give dressage a good run. love the horse!! i'm a draft lover, but i don't have the wallet for one!!

  • Far out, i really like him!

Dont put yourself down so much! Ive seen much much worse, he travels nicely! Not horrible at all!

  • What kind of breed is your ( not shure if it's yours :D) horse? he/she is beautyfull! :)

  • If you sit back on your seat bones, you won't bounce as much. To find your seat bones, lift your knees up above the saddle and your legs away from the horse's sides. Find your point of balance in this position, and you will feel your seat bones digging into the saddle. Now point your legs back down and remember what it felt like with your legs up in the air and recreate the feeling with your legs down. Practice, practice, practice, and hey presto, no bounce :-D

  • i've seen worse!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful horse!

  • hi,

i have only ridden dressage a few times but what I noticed and i am not saying it in a affending way just a helping. You could work on strengthening you back up so it can help your posture. and your seat. and what I do to try to help teach hand position is i make a certain spot where your hand can feel at all times on the saddle, pad, or neck of horse. and that can help keep your hands in one place and have a place to return to. overall i think that is the only crotuiqe. :) hope it helps!

  • @105sassygal I totally agree, the rest looks great!

  • looked good to me, a magnificent animal who seemed to be behaving well. bravo!

  • Look people- you do't have to be so mean to me! All I said was that she could try and sit the trot a bit better! Like loosening up her lower back! Geez people!!!! >_<

  • Well he does a better test then my fiery chestnut showjumper bahahaha

  • i like the bouncy rider

  • You did a great job. I'm sorry no one seems to understand that people improve over time, that we're not perfect all the time, and that (most importantly) IT IS HELLA HARD TO SIT TO A DRAFTS' TROT. I learned to ride on belgian drafts, and let me tell you, they are some of the bounciest things out there. The fact that you didn't get bounced right out of the saddle is great all on its' own, lol. :P

  • I suggest the rider needs to learn how to sit the trot(:

  • @MegaHorsesaremylife I suggest you not make snooty comments and learn how to read as this video was made 4 years ago so I'm sure she's learned how to find her seat a little more in the sitting trot.

  • @shiiuza

    snappppppyyyy

  • @shiiuza I was just saying! I wasn't trying to be mean. Geez....you don't have to be so mean about it:/

  • You can see he's not feeling forward in that test, I'd recommend riding bareback or under a pad and surcingle to develop the muscels that help your seat.

  • how come everyone is complaining bout the same old little things. i think she did kick butt for riding a shire. I never seen one get ridden. my grandpa had one to plow. But i have read enough horse magazines in my life to know its not easy sitting their trot. you did really well in my opinion. But you know haters is what makes you famous. Keeo working hard and dont let cranky people stand in the way if dressage is your passion.. <3

  • @KrystalIceStudios that;s really good adivce. My gypsy vanner and my clydsadle mix are very different to ride than my paint mare

  • I don't see why your all criticising her! She's knows what she did wrong, yes she's said if you find anything else wrong let her know, but I think its still wrong, especially the comments I read!

    Just getting MY point across!

  • Maybe if you learned ho to sit...

  • Oh god lol. It must be really hard to sit to a shire's trot. The closest I've ridden to a shire was a Belgian and I hated it

  • Oh dear makes my butt sore just watching.

  • You dont have to be a dressage rider to have a good seat or strong legs everywhere i think jumpers need even more a better seat... just saying....and when you dont have a steady leg why wear spurs??? for shure shires are not really a forward type horse but you should try a easier more experienced horse if you have trouble...

  • If you already say in the description that you are not a dressage rider and have no clue what you are doing than why do you even try to ride the horse?

  • what an awful rider!

jab jab jab with spurs and plonking around in sitting trot. the poor beast

  • I think it is good for a draught it is the rider who is horrible!

  • The horse really wasn't that bad. I'd say it's the rider who wasn't so hot. She should really work on that sitting trot.

  • he didnt look that bad.

  • I have ridden shire horses for many years and competed with them from dressage, jumping and even hunted them. the shires I used to ride were actually used to joust as well as do draught work. Yes they are harder to ride because of their size BUT they can do very well in dressage but you need to school them alot and keep them very supple.lots of transitions and circles!!!!

  • I think there is nothing wrong with having a shire in dressage you dont just need a thoughrbred or really expensive horse to win a competition.

  • Have you ever sat on shire? They are extremly heavy on their steps, and I would never be able to ride a shire that good eventhough i've had horses since I was 8 years old. Give her a break.

  • Heels down , keep your contact and taketake with your inside hand for a frame.

Around 420 he looks like he picked up on the wrong lead. COULD JUST BE ME THOUGH, JUST SAYING (:

  • Before I read your comment I was thinking 'this isnt horrible' One of my horses is a draft horse and they arent easy to ride, collect, engage etc!! I think he has a nice way of going! Yay for heavy horses!!

  • Your being too hard on yourself :) it wasn't that awful, work on your seat and youl do fine, I could see he was being a bit stubborn with going forward lol but really not terrible at all :)

  • SOFTEN! im sure you were just nervous but the horse is only tense because of you

  • He has lovely transitions - that cantering 20 metre circles was lovely! All the things you say in your description - are things you can improve on - no rider is ever perfect.Keep at it because you have good posture and you just strive to improve.

  • He has such great movement and collection! We're training ourselves and our Gypsy for dressage - so I feel with you, as it can be quite a challenge if you have never done it! Beautifully done, though!

  • well done :) lovely and quiet and a nice wee experience for him :) you say it was a first level test meaning you both probably didnt have much previous experience, tbh he probably had a bazillion other things going on in his mind! he was very well behaved, congrats! :)

  • try rising during your test hunny, if its prelim ur allowed, also take a schooling whip in with u, try using your next few tests as 'practice tests'

    Good luck xx

  • Lots of keyboard warriors up in this page...

  • && i simply love his canter. It's rare here (i've never seen one.) to have a SHIRE that does DRESSAGE. They are more use, for horse beauty contest, or for fun, or for sleigh ride? So i think it's beautiful & really different. Beautiful isn't the word.Even if the trot is weird. ;p

  • i think the shire is beautiful even in dresssssssage.

  • I know this vid was filmed along time ago, but I would recomend for you... Lots of work without stirrups, and on the lunge with no hands or stirrups. It really helped me when I was young get a very balanced seat. Even riding bareback if you can give it a go

  • wow.... you are flying all over the place... you really need to sit deep in that saddle and grip more with your thighs, I have no muscles in my lower legs, just my thighs, but im great at dressage

  • woow , the horse is bieautiful !

  • if its u riding then why do this: shire in dressage - Horrible ? do u want attension or sumthin ? :/

  • What a beautiful horse!

    How tall is he?

  • Haha, you look like you're working way harder then he is! I think this is great, I wish I could try him, he looks like a good boy!

  • You know what's harder? A Percheron that can hardly lift hiis hooves at the canter because they're so huge...

  • haha he reminds me on my old standard bred. he just didnt want to go forward. but he knew intro A by heart and knew when to turn so he would always transition early. he was such a pain to keep goin and or on track. i have ridden a shire/percheron cross and i died on how smooth she was. dont know how it would be hard on a shire to not bounce... just saying.

  • Aww, that lazy horse! I think you both doing grat!!!

  • The poor shire, he is trying his best. Shire's just happen to be my favourite breed & they are good at dressage with a good amount to training :L

  • i think with ALLOT of lessons you and your horse could do very well. keep at it. don't give up!!!

  • What the f***k with his hands ?

  • What a gorgeous horse!! I've been riding pretty much my whole life and i'd struggle sitting still on a horse that big with such a massive stride!! He's huge!!! I think you look lovely together, it's better to be brave and try the test rather than perfect it all at home. I think you did a great job and you can only get better as a team :)

  • I don't have a big problem with the way you rode, it's not easy to do a dressage test on a difficult horse when you're also not a dressage rider. But in your description you just blamed the horse. "He wasn't going forward." <--Make him go forwards! "He was worked up about leg yielding" Probably not ready to show 1st level then!

  • firstly, well done, its hard for anyone to be brave enough to get out there in front of a judge, especially on a more 'unconventional' horse. I have seen PLENTY worse, secondly i would just ad that if you tried rising to the trot instead of sitting until you get a little stronger through your core, you may find you can use your seat/legs/hands more effectively.

  • you have to hold with your legs and hands can't shake

  • guys, give the rider some slack, its probably really a bouncy trot 2 sit 2, and she has the courage 2 ride a shire in dressage against all those warmbloods and it just goes 2 show that shires can b elegant and theyre not just 4 pulling carts, i bet alot of u critters wouldnt have the guts 2 do wot she did, so just can it

  • Hm. I don't think you can expect a Shire to look so elegant like a Hannoveranian and those warmbloods. And well, horses other than warmbloods barely have a chance to get to Grand Prix level because the judgers are focused on that warmblood-style.

    Nonetheless, a nice ride. =

  • it's not THAT bad. the horse have is lovely and smooth. But it seems kinda hard, this horses is BIG and you dont come around with ur legs, so it's hard to give the horse clear signals. That's why i think this is good ;)

  • your seat -- horrible

  • I know nothing about dressage but your horse is very beautiful and you will go as far as your mind and willpower will let you!

  • Good job! I feel for your poor spine though.... Lol. :). Hello from Canada....

  • For the people that are saying its wrong to do dressage on a shire, this lady has proved you wrong, i agree that its obviosly not what they are bred for, however i think shes done well with this shire especialy with the constant outline. Its her horse so she can do what she like with him, so long as it isn't causing him harm, and tbh he looks like hes enjoying what hes doing

  • I have a beautiful Shire, and he always does very well in dressage and showjumping and gets 1st and 2nd in both. He is a black and white 17hh, gelding, and he has a lovely canter for all comps, (XC,SJ,Dressage) he always does so well. I know they are drafts, but why does my Shire, do so well, then?Sorry,I promise I am not boasting but I might upload a video of me jumping and dressaging him, I just don't like how Shires have a bad reputation for Dressage and ShowJumping. Lovely horse by the way!

  • i know what its like doing dressage on a shire i rode my cousins in a dressage comp not that long ago & tbh even though the movements are different because hes a draft it wasnt that much harder!!but good job!

  • wauw cool! i have respect for this, how you can control that beautiful big horse while he isn't suitable for dressage (because he's a draft-horse his movements are totally different)

    good job!

    loves from the Netherlands:)

  • @xxsuzanneee1 Not so. They may be bred for pulling rather than elasticity, but this can be overcome to a certain extent through training. The movements are exactly the same, the horse's anatomy is the same, it's just not as limbre as, say, a lusitano :D

  • Hmm... I think you jump a little to much. In German we would say that you are not sitting deep enough in the saddle and maybe, you are to small to ride him. It would be easier for someone with longer and stronger legs, but if you will exersize with himm i am sure it will be better next time.

  • i think you did well :)

  • well done shires arnt breed for this don't worry what people say as long as the horse is going well and enjoying it :Dxx

  • Hi I'm 11 and im from England :) i have a Clydesdale x Irish Cob,,and got him in may 2011 sometime...and ive done 2 dressage tests up Brook Farm Training Centre a couple of months ago,and im doing my 3rd one on him in Feburary, and he does great in dressage :D ive come 4th both times ive done dressage on him.i agree,,he is probably more harder to ride than he looks!I lovee my ponny 'Barry Splash' aka- Barry, Baz :D but his show name is 'Splash Of Luck' hes only 6 but his my 1st pony i love him xx

  • Comment removed

  • I agree! Everyone has to start somewhere! And it looks difficult to sit that trot!

  • May I just ask why is this 'Horrible'? every rider has to start somewhere and don't you ever think your better than anyone else because you think you can ride better than her! because darling you were like that once ... and don't you ever forget that! credit to her for getting out there and having some fun with her horse, stop with the hate comments!

  • Great horse, bad riding. sort yr hands and seat out!

  • what the hell is going on with the sitting trot !

  • aww I love him. He was pleasant/quiet and did his job. Good boy.

  • Your horse is not in a hurry ;) But fun to see a shire in dressage :) (I am not good at english if you wonder what I write)

  • @oliviaxh *not a good rider yourself i meant

  • Awwww dont be horrible the Shire is not bred for anything atheletic xD But got to give him some credit he is working hard and I Cant to dressage to save my life all i can do it basics but i jump 1.15m courses with ease you dont HAVE to do dressage to be a good rider everyone has their own disciplines which they are really good at and @oliviaxh you blately a good rider yourself if you think Everyone has to be good at dressage to be good a riding, riding 9 years as a happy hacker proberly

  • this is funny clip

  • Heee does his job very well, but she.......

  • Shire horses are not suitable for dressage. If the driver went to a dressage horse (for example Hannover horse) so it would look pretty good dressage.

  • @anetsixteen366 i have a cross shire, and he does very well at dressage

  • I have a cob just like a shire and he can do ace dressage , its not horrible its gorgous xxxx

  • i love this horse he's gorgeous you rode him well in this xx

  • i have never ridden a shire before but i have been riding for 9 years and i know if you cant ride dressage you cant do jumping either. so i would work on your seat and legs if i was you because if you ride like that in a jumping show you'll definitively have a bad course.

  • @oliviaxh Hmmmm I have national year end awards in the 3'6" a/o hunters and 3' childrens/adult jumpers. So I guess I do okay.

  • @desilvano oliviaxh is absolutely right. It would be a mistake to ignore this advice. There are always ways to improve your riding. I personally am more impressed by a rider who is good at dressage than one who is good at hunter/jumper.

  • @desilvano i have noticed you leg is a bit short for dressage you want your stirrup another 1 or 2 holes down, also your bouncing around alot and using your hands alot too. I also notice when your horse gets into the bigger trots you seem to tense up through your leg causing that bouncyness so try to relax your hip and leg and let that hip angle open up more and steady your hand contact. remember A/O hunters and the jumpers are much different then what the dressage judges look for

  • @oliviaxh i cant do dressage because u dont understand it but i jump like a pro so what u gonna say bout that ?

  • @oliviaxh wtf you on about i know plenty of showjumpers who cant do a basic sitting trot and i bet they could jump rings around you!

  • @oliviaxh hahaah try riding one before you say things, they are bloody hard to trot, canter on cause they were not bread for that they were bread for pulling a cart. and of course her legs were moving as she said he wasn't going forwards. nd just cause you've been riding 9 years doesn't mean a thing, just saying .................

  • @oliviaxh totally true

  • @oliviaxh it must b damn hard riding a shire in dressage, so cut her some slack will u?! that shire is a legend and she is brave enough 2 do what she does, so there

  • @oliviaxh and where r ur riding video's hmmmmm..??

  • @oliviaxh I am probably the worst dressage rider you'll come across, yet I have state and national titles under my belt in showjumping WITH (shock/horror) an ex-racehorse.....hmmmm

  • what is the matter a shire can do dressage its not horrible its cute i have 28 horses and i a`m only 13 years

  • better than i could do any day! x beautiful horse as well gorgus x

  • You did awesome! Big horses like this are so hard to ride, I know! You guys are so cute together :)

  • You did alot better than I would have done!!!! I'm terriable at dressage and my haflinger just won't move forwards... ohh ye and she likes to do what she wants, when she wants. :)

  • it's good i can't even do dressage so uur better than me . what i would say is try talking to ur hores it helps u relax and makes him/her relax 2 i helps me alot as i am usally quite neverous 2 begin wiv x

  • No,it's not horrible. Sometimes he looked something but the dynamism was good, and I really love these big horses:)

  • thats not fair to say that its not good, its brilleant and well done for trying,.. dont put youre self down for no reason :)

  • he is amazing! and you did a great job! keep going! and nobody is perfect btw;)

  • your horse looks really well and happy, I think ur doing a great job!

  • in asitting trot u need to absorb the bounce in your tummie and not just sit there because 1st it is uncomfoable on the horse and 2nd it looks messy

  • what a beast!Looks very bouncy!

  • you know what? i love it! well done you :) so what your not perfect but who is? well done to both you and your beautiful horse! x

  • Don't do a first level test if you don't know how to use your seat yet. You're doing well for "not knowing what you're doing" but you're also taking it too fast for you and your horse.

  • hes beuotiful soooo jelos

  • oh my XD his trott looks really uncomfortable to sit ^^ but you did good anyway ;)

  • A bad day on a shire beats a good day on any other horse. Shires rock!

  • i'm thinking you do are doing a pretty good job! loveit x

  • i like this lots, hes a lovely horse

  • Dressage is not easy on horses like this, it is hard work but very rewarding and you are doing quite a good job :) Don't worry about bouncing (the have bouncy trots) or anything like that, you've recognised that you do this and it will improve :). Shires in dressage = one of my favourite things. They are a fantastic breed. I had a project shire once when he was 4 (and already 17.3hh!) and I miss that horse everyday, such a willing, intelligent, caring giant :)

    well done x

  • I like his foppy ears.

  • @KalettaMyBaby r u weird or something how would i have got onto the video if i hadent had looked at the desscription!

  • @KalettaMyBaby u cant tell me what to do!!

    shut up!

  • @KalettaMyBaby yeah well i might not want to !!!!

  • that girl does nt know how to do sitting trot!

  • @crazypizzahorse234 have you ever tried sitting trot on a horse designed for pulling not riding? Not easy.

  • @centaur00me i guess i was being a bit mean :I

no i have nt tryd sitting trott on a pulling horse.

  • There's absolutely nothing wrong with that horse going dressage. Dressage doesn't start at piaffe or >65% in a GP - dressage simply means a well-schooled horse according to its physical and mental abilities. You're right though, you have to improve your seat. Why don't you take lessons? Good luck. :-)

  • its not horrible!

  • He's got a floppy ear :P

  • what is horrible?

  • bounce bounce bounce. :P

  • haha my horse's dressage is so much worse than this... but shes a hunter so it really doesn't matter :L

  • I agree with the dressage whip. I have a whip when I'm riding big horses because I know my leg commands may be unclear if they're used to riders with longer legs. Don't worry about the bouncy seat. I'm awful when it comes to sitting trot, and with horses it's generally much bouncier because they have longer legs. Shires especially! Just relax you're shoulders and go with the stride. You may find it a bit easier to keep your seat deeper in the saddle. Beautiful horse though, and well ridden!

  • You're riding a bit piano handed, getting those thumbs on top will help you relax your arms down and into your sides. They're a bit bouncy here at the trot. Beautiful horse though!

  • thats not horrible at all. but if you want to do dressage ,maybe get a lighter type, like a warmblood or something like that . well ridden though i no wat its like to have awkwar horses!! :)

  • that horse is amzing. maybe just a little too much knee action not that mus=ch though. practice sitting your trot better you are bouncing too much. but other than that your really good. Good Luck :)

  • I don't know what you're talking about! Horrible? I think this is beautiful, greeatt joobb!! :))

  • oh and forgot to add the only thing i would critisise is the spurs, your lower leg isn't staying still because of the bouncy trot and you dig the horse in the ribs quite a bit accidently, i would take them off and use a dressage whip until you get your leg still :)

  • Everyone stop talking to boots and saddle, she obviously wants a reaction, just flag her comments because she is just being disrespectful

  • awww i bet its hard doing sitting trot on a shire!!dont write horrible,,you need self confidence!!as i do too at the mo....anyway all tyuo need is practice and i found it really helps if you go stirrupless :) x

  • my guess, polish the horse up a bit and he would be stunning

  • Anyone who says heavier breeds can't do dressage/jump/event, etc are all ignorant and don't know what they're talking about. My 15.3hh native welsh section d mare does dressage, can do pirouettes, leg yields and such without any problems.. before i had her she couldnt even canter. Hell, i even taught my 4 year old miniature to leg yeild.. jeez, any breed can do it, its whether the owner has the patience to teach it that matters. No horse is the same. This shire looks stunning in its leg yields.

  • You did awesome! My family has a five year old Percheron gelding (Who's 18.1hh) who is always being a buttface whenever you're on him and i've ridden him a few times, only at a walk and trot, since i myself have only cantered around 15 times on my Quarter Horse and am relatively unexperienced (I'm only 13, but i've been riding since i was 8 There was an accident a few years back that scared me enough (and shattered my helmet), that postponed my riding for a while). You did great on a Shire!

  • draft horses can be a challenge to ride- they have such a powerful stride! i remember riding mack (draft cross) and was completely blown away by the difference in feel from a quarter horse to mack.. good job!

  • Keep it up, :) You're looking good. Shires are such a pretty bread too!

  • i think you both look fabulous. Its nicceto see you and your horse out doing something different. Well done =D

  • :) I think you handled him very nicely! Its really hard riding different breeds that you arent used to. I'm used to Arabians and Quarter horses so when I started doing horse therapy on drafts, it was a little awkward! I think you have a very nice seat and sat the trot way better than I could have! :D Keep up the good work!

  • For more info on going forward, and leg yeilding ... search this video on youtube ... Dressage Trainer Jane Savoie's Explains Leg Yielding

  • It was my observation that this horse appears to have a bone jarring trot ... since the riders seat looks very good in the canter. As far as the going forward / leg yeilding goes ... the feet need to ... as well as the hands. They are way to busy. And there is constant pressure with the use of the spurs, which then no longer function as a tool of communication.
