Have been running with 251 max for a while now.Recently tried 84mW, much better.
My signal dropped slightly, from excellent to very good- but you get higher speeds and less packet loss.
Higher transmit power = lots of distortion.
Think of it like turning crappy speakers all the way up, you can't hear it as well.
I'm a kind of guy who likes to overkill things, but if you're looking for that route I'd suggest getting a higher gain antenna and possibly a booster.
The forums have had discussions about what power level is safe, with little consensus. Use common sense and don't set the power higher than you really need to. If you're trying to get more range, consider using a different antenna and make sure you have a clear line of sight, two of the most critical factors in your router's range." -- Straight from their wiki.
@fuge805 You dumbass, it's THEIR wiki. Their OFFICIAL wiki. Yes anyone can change it, it's run by contributors who donate their time, like the people who write DD-WRT. I would definitely trust anything that I have read in their wiki over what this guy is saying with no scientific basis for anything. Do you really think if the default is 70 "Maxing it out at 251" is the best option? Wouldn't they set that as the default? Am I the only one with common sense here?
@dextrophan they can't legally set it at 251 because there are FCC laws that dictate how much power commercial products are allowed to transmit. Take a look at a cordless phone and you somewhere on it you may see a sticker with the FCC information on it as well.
Mate have you ever heard the term "over clocking" google it and see if your "common sense" holds true. Then edit your post to say "Am I the only ignorant pleb"
Yes, increasing Tx Power DOES increase range. Tx power is the strength of the antennas. I have experience with many ddwrt routers and never has it decreased the life of one of my routers. I gave my dad a router over a year ago maxed out to 251 Tx power and it is still running strong. Never has it skipped a beat.
"Somewhere around 84 mW is considered to be the best setting for maximum power with minimum noise for most hardware. The Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 has a built-in amplifier. The amplifier is turned on by default; the radio power should not be set above 10mW (on v23SP2), or 70mW (on v24).
,hope your not sitting next to it. ..router .lol ..i think thats like 1/4 watt rf output and all . The horse shoe antenna might help with that though... i love the wrt54g-t for the
removeable antenna and the MEGA.bin
Have fun and pay attention to the temp in the viscous fluid of your eye balls :-)
Yea most if not all wireless routers allow you to type some sort of code like that into your adress bar and you can configure your router through that. But mine put a link on my desktop that I click on and all I have to do is log in and configure.
Well, All you have to do is remove the screws on the bottom of the router with a torch rench. You can get that at Lowes Home Improvement. And take a knife and pry the top off, this takes a good amount of force. It will seem like your breaking it, but you wont if you go along the seams prying it open. There are Clips inside the router holding the lid on.
This is also helpful for reducing wireless signals for a small area/room so it doesn't interfere with the main wireless network at a business.

Increasing the Tx power doesn't necessarily increase range. However, maxing it out may decrease the life of your radio.
