You are absolutely correct! Carp are an invasive specoes. Guess if all i pretty much had to fish for were over grown goldfish, i would call em gamefish as well! They make great fertilizer though. The europeans killed off almost all true gamefish (including the sturgeon-sad) so they brought in carp. So many dnr and game and fish agencies cant be wrong. Where i fish there are over 60 species of fish. I will continue to execute the carp i pull out of there.

Europeans miss the point with carp because carp have been running wild in europe so long (since the middle ages) that they made all the native species extinct. you don't know any better, but carp are a big reason why every river in europe is a deep, muddy brown. Here in the US we have species that are agressive, excellent food sources and don't turn the water muddy by rooting up the bottom and destroying all the plant life.

You can catch Carp on a Pole if you know what you're doing, and have a strong Pole and strong elastic.

I've had Mirror Carp up to 10lb on a Pole.

There are 3 species of Asian carp and 2 are filter feeders - which means they have no stomachs and therefore don't eat in the normal way - therefore you cannot catch them on a rod & reel. Netting or bow fishing are the only way to catch them. If the 2 filter fishing species come to dominate your area you might as well throw away your rod & reel as your fishing days will be over.

@c0ncept bowfishing is a GOOD THING, letting them go you are creating a horrible living environment for every other fish in the body of water, carp are bottom feeders, they blow up algae and silt and muck into the water and contaminate water and that makes the lake thick and hard to see through, plants in the water cant grow if the sun cant penetrate deep under water cause the water is so dirty,so the plants wont grow, which is food for other fish!

That's the biggest crock of shit I've read all day, man. Just because a fish is a bottom feeder does not mean that they contaminate the water by blowing silt up. Who told you that? I don't know how to get through to people like you but carp, catfish, and other bottom feeders have developed to live the way that they are for a reason.

The only kind of human interference I understand is eliminating Asian carp since they aren't native to N. America and can harm the eco-system.

Actually carp DO make the water murky by churning up the silt on the bottom all day long - do the research. This also blocks out the sunlight and kills the algae in the water, thereby killing off many species of other fish.

However, I have accepted this fact 45 years ago and became a carp fisherman and have enjoyed catching them on the Illinois river ever since. I also DON'T kill them but release them afterward. Carp grow huge and are hard fighters and I enjoy catching them.

I said they didn't contaminate the water. (ie. impurities). Not to prolong a debate, but OK, let's say they do make the water murky. How exactly is that harmful? I understand your point about the murkiness blocking sun rays, but there would have to be a ridiculous amount of carp stirring up ridiculous amounts of silt to kill algae of all things. Assuming there are normal numbers of carp in a body of water, I find it hard to think that they can kill off algae and starve fish.

I live right by the Illinois river & if you did too you would understand. There ARE ridiculous amounts of huge carp in our river - tens of millions as they have no predators here. Many of these are also the Asian carp filter feeder variety & you can't find any algae in our river anywhere. Watch the videos here of the massive amounts of flying carp when a boat goes by & you will see how overpopulated they have become. Carp quickly outgrow all other species & destroy natural resources.

I was talking more in regards to average bodies of water and not circumstances like your river. I actually have seen those videos before and I understand what you're saying. Also, like I said before, I know how Asian carp are not native and cause issues, and I have no problem with taking whatever measures necessary to prevent their spread to the great lakes.

As an angler of around 15 years, I've fished quite a few lakes and rivers in the WV, KY, and OH region and never seen carp pushing out other species. I may catch an occasional carp, and I've never even seen an Asian carp here. I'm not sure what your objective is here - kill all carp no matter the species? I believe that if the carp is native then it should be left alone. As I already said, Asian carp are another issue.

Use 10-12 pound test and go easy on the drag if you're a beginner. I once reeled in a 15 pound carp on 4 pound test so it really just depends how well you know the limits of your equipment.

I would use 8 to 12 pound line for a beginner. It is pretty fun to catch carp on light tackle. I have caught some nice carps on 6 pound line so it really just depends on if you know how to land the fish.
