  • cool i have a cabin in mammoth creek ut

  • How can you review this kind of thing without actually showing the food.

  • One constructive suggestion is to give us some close up of the food.

  • thank's for the great info.i have been wondering about these freeze dried foods..

  • Love the video! We have been wondering how these taste and have a good idea now. Thanks so much Mike.

  • the lasagna actually has alot of cheese in it

  • instructions toolness

  • Good vid Mike!!!

  • I had a freeze dried ice cream sandwitch :P

  • If its salty you are going to have to bring extra water with you so you dont dehidrate.

  • Just buy some rice sacks. Buy some protein shake pulver. Buy some milk powder. Cans. You don't need the expensive stuff. Buy more than you eat and rotate the storage.

  • i like this video very much..good job..the wind noise isn't bad, its the same as being there..what can you do..its a keeper..Mike,,,,why no new postings?

  • me and my dad just put 2 in one bag and put 2 cups boiling water in it he spent 24 years with mres so we just pass the bag back and forth

  • The wind didn't bother me at all, I do have 3 kids though.

  • he shows the food...watch the whole video...

  • I would pay money to see a grizzly wandering up from the backround. Screw the food, buy a .454 Casull. Do not use the Casull to shoot rabbits. Not much will be left.

  • What is the shelf life of freeze dried mountain house packets?

  • We go to the boundary waters in MN on a regular basis and always bring at least a couple of these Mountain House meals. Our favorites so far are the chicken breasts and mashed potatoes, and chicken a la king. Of course everyone's choice of taste is going to be different, but if you'd like a little comfort from home in the form of a meal.. i would definitely recommend stuff from Mountain House. Also it's easy and ready to eat right from the pouch you added hot water into...so no dirty dishes =)

  • the chicken breast and patatoes is good the patatoes taste normal

  • The least you could have done was point the camera at the actual food. I would have liked to see the food in the pot

  • I back pack year round. I hope I don't get in trouble for doing it out of season. :)

  • THANKS MIKE

  • i had freeze dried ice cream, its nice

  • first meal. Hes eyes after tasting: "OMFG! I ate camels ass!"

  • "I love a good beef stew"

    I almost LOL'd

  • I am a big fan of MH meals - my personal fav is the Chicken Teriyaki, but all of them are good. Even ignoring the fact that preparation consists of boiling water (even I can get that right!) these meals are top-notch! Way better than MREs, and on par with a lot of canned stuff.

  • I have over $1000.00 worth of MH #10 cans recently purchased over a 6 month period. I have not tried them yet , thank you for the heads up on it being salty as I need to watch my salt intake.

  • Where did you buy the mountain house from?

  • i just ate the beef stroganoff ....wow holy cow this is osome!!....i am a very pain jane eater ...worth the high price for a backpack bug out bag ...i be full all day too much in one pouch for one LOL

  • Add more water if it's too salty. Thanks for the video!

  • Get a wind screen for your microphone.

  • I use MH for emergency food storage. I'm from the Southeastern USA...we LOVE salt and fried stuff. So, that combined with the fact that I grew up eating MREs on the weekends makes MH taste like a T-bone and a cold one.

  • I use those meals alot when I backpack. The lasagna is good, as well as the beef stroganoff. I like them for lunch on the trail as they are easy to prepare. I've been dehydrating my meals at home now. Less soduim, better portions, and cheaper.

  • How do you make your own freeze-dried meals? I'd be interested in learning, especially if it's cheaper!

  • Not a bad video. I had my first MH meal yesterday. Chicken and Noodles and it wasn't bad but the sodium was insanely high. For over two hours I could still taste the salt.

  • Need to use a better wind muff on the mic. Other then that, great review.

  • Good review. you don't know how good it makes me feel you all like MH food to. I'm always getting bashed. I like natural high and backpackers pantry to. As a backpacker that does some miles of hiking all day long in the mountains, check the internet you need the xtra salt for that kind of exertion. Its the short one hour exercise spirts of a gym you don't need any salt intake.

  • The spaghetti with meat sauce is delicious. :)

  • Great idea, lets see more reviews in the future.

  • Yeah , I am guessing they use a lot of sodium

so they will keep in storage.

How long will one of those freeze dired meals keep in storage?

  • you are correct...there is another reason as well...lots of people use these as their main source of meals when doing a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail or other long distance hikes...when doing hikes of this strenuous nature the body loses essential salts through sweat so the extra salt in these meals helps to replenish what you lose.

  • Great review. To be honest, I haven't had a bad MH meal yet. All are tasty. My favorite is the Beef Stroganoff, with the Chili Mac running a close second. I boil 1/2 canteen cup of water on my MSR PocketRocket stove. Dump the hot water into the bag, mix, and zip it up for a few minutes. No dirty pans to clean. Having a hot meal during a cold weather hike can make all the difference. I once prepared the freeze dried Scrambled Eggs (from a #10 can) for our group at basecamp. No complaints.

  • Nice review! These are convenient packages, but a bit pricey. I sometimes empty cans of soups into ziplocks. Much cheaper, but not as "cool" as the MH meals.

  • Good review Mike. Don't worry what the naysayers whine about. The sound is good. I don't see those jackasses putting up MH food reviews. Silly asses.

  • We are reducing the sodium in 10 of our highest sodium entree's for 2009. We don't add salt, it is all part of the ingredients (like Soy Sauce and spices).

    Good Review.

  • you need a LMF spork

  • the salt is most likely for if your lost without food and need that extra salt

  • ...have you tried freeze dried ice cream yet??

  • Sorry, the wind noise is too annoying. I cant finish watching this review.

  • I do apologize for the wind noise. I forgot to bring the remote mic, and Soundbooth could only do so much.

I debated on even uploading it, but judging by the controversy it's inspired I'm glad I did.

  • @turdburper I don't guess you enjoy camping either since it sounds like this inside a tent often, which begs the question why you're watching a review on camping/survival supplies?

  • @ajatkinson2004 What do spending time in a tent, and watching a video on Youtube have to do with one another? You're making a false correlation.

  • @Gtrsnax what im saying is if you can't handle the sound of this video, I don't see how you could handle the sound of a windy tent in real life...

  • @turdburper Christ, for people who walk in the woods all day, you've got some picky viewers here.

  • you should have added the water to the bag instead of trying to "cook" in a pan.the food just needs to hydrate and should NOT be "simmered".

boil water ,pour water in bag, seal ziplock, let sit for 10mins.

as for saltyness i nver cook with salt and i find the mountain house meals to be very low in sodium compared to even canned soups or regular prepared foods. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS NEXT TIME!

  • I appreciate your feedback, however, I did read the instructions. The temperature that day was about 60 degrees F, and if you couldn't tell, windy! 10 minutes of sitting would have left the meal ice cold. Simmering seamed like good solution, and worked well. However, if you like cold food then stick to the instructions. Secondly having over 50% daily sodium content per serving is very high. Most of the other meals are no where near this high, and taste much better.

  • if you in fact seal the meal in it's pouch

it will not be cold but quite hot after 10min if you leave it in a pan yes it will cool down

but it should not be cooked that way anyway.

As for the sodium:it IS for backpacking, and helps retain water. I thought we were speaking mainly about the salty taste which i think is minimal

  • Just to be clear my complaint is with the beef stew which does taste too salty to me. Most of the other Mountain House meals contain about 30% sodium per serving and taste better. You have a good point about needing more sodium during heavy exercise. My problem is more the caloric intake to sodium ratio. 280 calories/50% sodium. If I ate beef stew all day to get 2000-3000 calories, I'd be urinating salt crystals. At most 2x the RDA of salt is OK when backpacking, 5x is too much.

  • Agian i think you not judging this product by it's intended use.2 serving of those meals is not intended to give you 2-3000 calories a day which most packers would not intake anyway (to much weight) and would supplement with other high caloric foods.and no i don't work for mountian house

  • @forsakentrails i looked at the nutritional content of the foods as well and the sodium blew me away..you cant be too picky on the trail but people with heart probs beware..would it be any better if you placed more water i wonder??

  • Bro, I have cooked MH in sub freezing temps and left it in the pouch for 10 mins to cook many times. Never does it get "ice cold". The pouch is meant to retain the heat. Believe me your meal will taste much better next time. They are not made to simmer.

Also try the beef stroganoff it is the best IMO.

  • i have some spaghetti right now im going to try it later

  • lol beef stew. otherwise great video 5 stars
