  • Simple Minds for a lifetime achievment award- anyone else agree?

  • Simple minds are good but no one compares to U2

  • i looooooooooooove this ..........

  • I was also there! Simple Minds and U2 were both giants that time. I think U2 still is. Simple Minds lost their heartbeat with the depart of Derek Forbes. Later today I'm gonna watch the ExSimple Minds (Derek Forbes, Brian McGee (SM's first drummer) & friends) in Almere, the Netherlands. I can recommend them. I saw them earlier this year in Zoetermeer.

  • simple minds are the godfathers, u2 are the spinoff

  • amazing :)

  • What would I give to be at that concert...........

  • They both had similar voice then.

  • "Eighty one! Eighty two! Eighty three! Eighty four! Eighty five! Eighty six! Eighty seven! Eighty eight! Eighty niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    LOL! Whatever.

  • I was 18 years old, and I WAS THERE...How times have flown, still love the song.

  • @viking061265 Do you remember our beloved 80's buddy? When we were young, free and full with life! When the fuel was mega-cheap,no mobile phones,iPhones,Notebooks and Internet? Only us,beautiful girls, summer breeze and ocean in front of us.....I miss those times, bye from Macedonia!

  • simple minds is why i got into u2

  • The two best singers in the world performing together, would give everything to have been there.

  • What's the meaning of 81, 82, 83, 84 and so on??

  • Take it both support Celtic ? : )

  • Well, BONO seems to be the better "Spiderman"....

  • Said to my pals in school in 85...u2 will never reach the standards of feeling ...we had MacNeill,Forbes,Burchill,Kerr,Gaynor.... Better musicians, singer... enuff said..full stop.

  • the 2 top of the world .......

  • Funny Eno was on both bands......

  • To all those who spit at either Kerr or Bono: Just imagine what it would have been like to be at this gig! Kerr asked Bono to join him. Kerr commented in an interview during the gig that, apart from Peter Gabriel, U2 may be the best live band in the world. They were friends, they jammed, they were having great time and so did the audinece. Whether Bono sang LIKE Kerr is irrelevant. The energy is fantastic!Isn't that what matters in music? Isn't that why everybody goes to a gig? So, play it loud!

  • @Ognen11 Honestly?I prefer Simple Minds alone. It's irrelevant to me if some prefer Bono,it's simply a matter of taste. Also the title of the video is WRONG.Should be Simple Minds featuring Bono Vox.Jim Kerr to me will have ever more value than Bono Vox,ever. Is annyoing for a Simple Minds fan, like me,to see and read everytime the same comments regarding the friendship between Kerr and Vox.Remeber that they WERE friends, they are not friends no more, just ask yourself why.Best live band are Queen.

  • @ultrafragola2000 Well, enjoy Simple Minds, then. I've seen both U2 and Simple Minds live, I've been a fan of both these bands for over 25 years and I grew up listening to both. What I'm saying is that, in my opinion, they are not mutually exclusive and it is possible to be a fan of both bands. It's boring to see how people divide into camps, as if it were a war of some sort. And, when I read a novel, I don't care who Dostoyevski's friends were. His novels are great. So are these two bands.

  • @Ognen11 Sure i'm still enjoying SM,as i really don't care about U2.By the way yes i want to make a great divide between the two bands, between the two lead guitarists, between the two lead singers. To SM will have forever more value than U2 will have, even if U2 are more popular and sells a lot of records to me they're not comparable to Simple Minds. So SM aka Kerr and Burchill are my best ones.

  • @Ognen11 The old story of the Kerr and Vox friendship is an annoyance to me too,but are U2 fans that bring it to discussion everytime,i can do without too.IMO,no offence, you can't appreciate in full SM if you like U2.

I'm fan of Simple Minds from 22 years and i never find any interest in U2 music.

  • @ultrafragola2000 I doubd Kerr regrets having called Bono on stage, even now. I don't know why you do. Granted, you can hate Bono's singing. As to whether one can appreciate SM if one likes U2 as well, I don't agree with you. I should say that even no artist ever fully appreciates his/her own work. Art is not easily squeezed into boxes. What I do appreciate are the long hours I've spent listening to the vinyls of both bands. So, the black and white thing doesn't work for me. BTW,superb song

  • @Ognen11 These are the difference in opinions,i have nothing to complain towards your opinion, mine is simply different than yours.NGD it's a stunning song,i agree, but with Jim Kerr only as lead singer. But i have to point:if i LOVE Jim Kerr voice how i'm supposed to appreciate Bono Vox? It's an antithesis, and if i'm claiming that i don't find any interest in U2 music how i'm supposed to love The Edge as guitarist if Burchill to me is the best one?IMO Kerr regretted bitterly to invite on stage Vox

  • @ultrafragola2000 Yes, it's not Bono who stars here, that's why JK sings it the way it is supposed to be sung. Anyway, they did it for the hell of it. But, we're both being silly. I'll go ahead and treat myself to some Upon the Catwalk (with Kerr signing it) and then I'll listen to some Unforgettable Fire (sung by Bono), and then some Brian Eno.

  • @Ognen11 Bono starts in the wrong way, sorry. Also Vox pretend to sing wonderfully this song..it's really pretentious as he's awful here.I guess no one of us here it's silly,it's only debating and nothing more.I will listen up on the catwalk too, then the american, then love song, then this fear of gods, and then Johnny Cash ring of fire X3

  • @ultrafragola2000 Good. Don't skip Theme for Great Cities (which I'm sure you know very well), it goes with that lot. And yes, technically, Bono is awful here. I wish I had been there, though, to see this gig anyway. Best of luck mate, it's nice when two people disagree and don't thow insuslt at each other.

  • @Ognen11 I don't like theme from great cities ^////^ i'm not such fine in taste,i know by myself. It's nice indeed, but should be like this all the time,i mean opinions are only opinions and nothing more,no wrong nor right. Best luck to you too X3

  • @leowramone You woote:so simple and easy this negative attitude, be postive , greetz fm netherlands .

I don't see why i must stay positive, Simple Minds are to me the greatest band ever, but if someone claim the converse then ok,it's another point of view. But i don't need to chasing challenge or comparison with other bands, like U2 fans doing allway. Then i will never get why everytime that US Simple Minds fans discussion about them,U2 fans jump with NO reason into a discussion.

  • @leowramone Look i'm NO u2 fan,i love SM,i think honestly that Jim Kerr is a precious artist and a genuine human being while Bono it is not, imo.Besides this issue let's admit that Bono here is completely clueless ,and Jim Kerr's voice is far better that Bono voice.I can see no problem to claim to be a great Simple Minds fan and dislike U2 that sold out fastly losing all their peculiarities.

  • OH my gosh,Bono is awful when he attempts to sing NGD..i'm vomiting!!!No comparison at all with Jim kerr....

  • The correct title would be: Simple Minds feat. Bono Vox - New Gold Dream

  • @Kenckaplus I agree.

  • @Kenckaplus this in not Werchter, but Glasgow 1985 one of the gigs from 3

  • nostalgie , nostalgie, ik heb het ontdekt na al die jaren. Prachtig !!!

  • ma va immona Sanremo!!!

  • This was in Glasgow in January 1985. I know cos I was there.

  • This was in Glasgow in January 1985. I know cos I was there.

  • Why is there no video of this?

  • Nooit gehoord maar het blijkt maar weer dat voor de echte kenners the simple minds verder waren dan U2 in het licht van New Gold Dream wat echt het beste album aller tijden is .

  • Wish there was a video for this!

  • Pity they fell out ...

  • @bhoyjack When did they fall out? The last i heard Jim was buying Celtic with Bono. :)

  • @smurfu2 Was after the attempt to buy Celtic. It was when U2 released "How to dismantle an atomic bomb" in 2004. Kerr was mocking the title of the album due to Bono's meetings with George Bush and Tony Blair. There was a bit of a spat over it but i believe they are talking again now.

  • @bhoyjack I never knew that cheers

  • @bhoyjack What a load of pish!

Typical Celtic fan re writing history. Absolutely NOTHING with Celtic. Everyting do do with U2 > Simple Minds.

    Knob!

  • @MrAmadaeus Didn't say it was to do with Celtic you cock !!

  • @bhoyjack 'Was after the attempt to buy Celtic'

You were saying you inbred fuckwit!

  • @MrAmadaeus Kerr and Kenny Dalglish attempted to buy Celtic and Fergus McCann knocked them back. I never mentioned Bono being involved though Bono himself is a Celtic fan (check his bio on Wikipedia). As for being an inbred , not me im not from Larkhall, Harthill or any of these other banjo playing places. You dont even know what religion i am or where im from so back to you fuckwit.....

  • @MrAmadaeus You are obviously one of these bigotted Catholic hating Rangers fans .....

  • @bhoyjack Who said they fell out?

  • @Felixmyboy See my comment below mate..

  • class, simply nothing else to add

  • Bono and Jim,the two best frontmen of the two best rockbands in the world!

  • battle of bnds noooooooooo simple minds special one

  • did Bono also join simple minds on stage at milton keynes in 1986 ?

  • just to note..when he says the capital city of Great Britain..Glasgow...that means this is the Glasgow Barrowlands New Year gig...not Werchter. I bet Werchter rocked as well though..

  • Comment removed

  • from dublin dublinnnnnnnnnn!!!:D

  • I think booth (Jim and Bono) could reach the same rank of voice. And also their style have much similarity, but at the same time each one preserve their own!

  • they did this in Croke park Dublin 1986 too , 70 thousand Irish going nuts to Simple minds then out walks Dublin nearly took roof off the place greatest gig i was ever at i was 15

  • @brendubmale35 i was there too the Waterboys were amazing loyld cole were crap

  • Oh my god....how awesome

  • could you upload the first part or the complete track?

    THanks

  • The two best bands of the world!

The best years of my life!

  • 81 82 83 84!!!!!

    KQQL verzion man!!!!

  • Two gods performing in Belgium, could life get better?

  • come on baby, light my fire

  • 1983 2010 et on est toujour la à les aimer EMOTION!!!

  • without wordssssssssss

  • Wäre ds Klasse, wenn U2 und Simple Mind mals wieder zusammen auftreten würden und zusammen ihre größten Hits spielen würden

  • I always thought U2 wished they originated this song, but realizing they could not, gave respect to Simple Minds to this all time great song that never gets old as this performance attest.!

  • simply unreal.

  • This must be the ultimate song, Bono singing the best song ever made together with Jim Kerr. It can't get any better. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • Battle of the bands doesn´t make sense :/ I´m listening to Simple Minds and they´re also good.

U2´s my favorite band and I like this song.

  • Wasn't there a little cold war between U2 and the Simple Minds as I remember ?

  • @doctorwhonico , wow, a war between U2 and Simple Minds..............what amazing times in music and human experience of art.....music today is so lame!!!!! hahahaha.

  • @sfumato1002 : I'm serious. I thought during the 80's it was a competition between U2 and SM. Even now Kerr says that Bono now is raping his ideas he had in the 80's about politics and stuff !

  • I was there Jan 5th 1985. Was in the front row and it still is the best gig of my life. Glory days

  • mmm great song, one of my favs, ,but what a fucked up version. but what do i know, im from the east end.. charlie ,scots guy in dublin

  • Lol at 1:09 does someone say "Fuck's sake"?

  • @davyjones800

you have good ears... had to listen it back few times.

  • I always felt that these two bands had the same sound, especially during the 80's.The thing is Jim Kerr and Bono both have similar voices, and they kind of looked like each other back then. There are some Simple Minds songs I enjoy better than U2,but both are good bands and to each their own.Great video!

  • This is from The Glasgow Barrowlands and not Werchter.I have a bootleg i bought not long after it ,and Bono makes 2 very clear references to Glasgow

  • fuck man, i was there too when i was only 13 years old. I still remember it like it was yesterday. Pff getting old :-)

  • LOVE

  • lol-I was there for that night-we thought we had the bum deal being the 2nd night out of 3.We got Bono ;-)

  • where can I get a music cd copy of this? legit?

  • @gazzatopdude1 this is from Simple Minds Silver box set. I've got loads of Minds bootlegs? the night after this is when Jim said they may split up then Bono came on again (summertime in glasgow)

  • SIMPLE MINDS!

  • great stuff the irish and the scotish are cousins long life to us all' erin go brea agus escosia' slan go foil'

  • @ciaranmacgiollauir

    You are very right!

  • Jim certainly has the better voice.

  • It was recorded in Glasgow, january 1985...

  • kippevel, goosebumbs, why wasn't i there??????

  • 2 bands was One Soul!

  • i am privelidged to have been brought up with the music of both these great great bands, but if i had to choose one it'd be simple minds - just !

  • It was at Werchter Rock Festival, on 3 July 1983. My first festival, a lot of sun all day long, and a terrific program: Scabs, Warren Zevon, JJ Cale, Eurythmics, Simple Minds, U2, P. Gabriel & Van Morrisson. Oh man ...

  • Any shouting from either singer is just the emotion of the event. Kerr is the better singer but so cool to hear both guys having a great time.

  • this was one of the greatest nights. I queued all night at the door of the Virgin Megastore on Union street to get the tickets and seconds after the doors opened the crush caused the next door Boots chemist window to crash in. Barrowlands in winter and there were guys stripped to the pants in the snow afterwards. Chrisse Hynde stood at the back clapping all night. This is an amazing posting? where d'you get it - I'd love to hear some more!

  • HAHA,I feel so oooooooooooold !

We arrived and they had just finished the opening number, the bouncer who let us in said, "moan hurry up or yell miss the fucking riot" He wasn't kidding it was totally mental, the sweat was literally running down the walls. We were right at the back and there was a video crew, so someone, somewhere has the whole show ? PLEASE put it on here.

  • @olivedelberto.. did the same all nighter. Remember the window going too lol. Had the audio bootleg of this gig from the Barras years ago, however it wasn't as good quality as this recording. This is an excellent post. If there's video out there somewhere it must be mega.

  • first time i heard this fantastic!!! one for history.

  • New Gold Dream still the best 27 years later... come and enjoy the new Someone Somewhere in Summertime's new way on myspace gariac popmusik

  • I have a recording of this but from another night, jim is by far better sounding.

  • ok guys , what you have to remember dosen't matter who the best singer, probabally best track for well ever and a piece of history in it with 2 of the best guys in music on 1 track . oh my god if someone had the live event on video, be awesome to see shame i was only 13 when it was out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pinkpop 83 ??

  • It would be awesome to see them perform together again!!!! Glastonbury??

  • @msshortbread1,

Completely agree. He doesn't get the song and shows himself to be a one-trick pony.

He might be the bigger star but Jim Kerr wipes the floor with him.

  • @msshortbread1 he's just a peculiar fellow who sings in a different way! Why does singing something in a different style automatically constitute "killing" it? Great song, two great singers and you just have to listen to appreciate the mutual respect so get a grip.

  • comeonbaby light my fire

  • unFUCKINreal!!

  • this is from simple minds 4 night stint at the Barras in the New Year of 1985. it was magic to see Bono looked like he did at the Live AID CONCERTit was amazing to see and it was recorded during u2s xmas break from their unforgettable fire tour and he and his wife Ali stayed at Jim, parents house for their break.Simple minds were on amazing form that night and it was derek forbes last gig weith the group before he was sacked. its footage like this that makes You tube worthwhile.

  • Battle of the bands whos best??? Still the 2 best live bands in the world!!!!!!

  • @leebedy71

    yeah you're right ;)

  • @leebedy71 SM did a poor job of taking America. From all the interviews since, it is apparent that SM had one foot in the past and didn't embrace the new media of their time. They were big everywhere else, but it took a single they didn't write tied to a blockbuster movie just to break them in the states. They were just as good as U2, but the rest is history.

  • @burn4you fuck the states always have been a place of false dreams and showbiz ! i prefer the real thing and simple minds over u2 are the real pioneers of inovative music !!!!!!!!! thats why i am from the uk

  • @sweetassugar69 Maybe so, but two of the best bands ever couldn't get arrested in England until they saw some success in the U.S......Led Zep & The Police

  • @burn4you You are quite right on some points! I love both bands and couldn't say who's the best. I've followed both for tha past 28 years and seen both numerous times live.. But SM were on a tour of the US (tour de monde) when Kieth Forsey chased them around for nearly a year to preform a song he wrote, which was a US No1 2 years before WOWY by U2

  • @leebedy71 Still the 2 best live bands in the world!!!!!! Battle of the bands whos best???

  • omg, the 2 fucking biggest bands of the 80's on the same stage.....

i soooo wanted to be there

  • yeahh they did history!

  • o wow bono who sings a simple mind song it is like i hear the gods singing.

  • you are absolutely right...!!!!!

  • this barrowlands glasgo 85

  • I judge that Jim sings Bono down in the ground!!!!

  • It's from the 5th Jan 1985 [it's on Silver Box] the other one the; 'we thought nah fuck it... it' alright I was only kiddin on' is from 4th Jan, on the 3rd Jan the crowd got Love Song and just SM doing NGD, I was at that one... good stuff...

  • what a fucking mess

  • 2 icon of the rock 80 ùnited

  • Definitely different from the Barrowlands version - I should know, I was at there!

  • The Glasgow-Version, recorded at Barrowsland, contains the hint of thinking of splitting up the band and the comment "there's always summertime in Glasgow". So this version might be a different one, not even worse.

  • Taken from: Summertime In Glasgow (Bootleg '85)...great sound, thanks for this video.

  • both great bands.top of their game.not even up for debate..keep on rocking boys....

  • I have heard this, but I would pay big bucks to find the actual video footage of this.

This is not the only version, Bono sang New Gold Dream with Jim several other times too.

  • this brings me back to croke park dublin june 1986 when bono came on stage with the Minds 70,000 people still the best gig i have ever seen and i have seen and am a U2 fan and have seen them all over the worrld

  • I never like that version of New Gold Dream. I don't like U2 at all. Bono is full of shit. One day he sing with Jim Kerr, other with Green Day or Mary J. Blige or Kylie Minogue. What is that? Simple Minds is #1 band in the world. For me there is no similarities between those two bands. SIMPLE MINDS - LEGENDS.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't get your point about Bono singiing with other people? Jim sings with Bono so what?? Both great bands, but when you compare album sales, grammies and other accolades...

  • this is barrowlands glasgow , new year gig

  • aaaah this is smashing.

  • Awesome! Didn't Charlie Burchill joined U2 once with a live performance of "40"?

  • U2+SM joined on stage in Torhout Werchter 1983 ;-)

  • Mel Gaynor is one (probably the best)the great drummer ever!

ps this New gold dream version is from glasgow borrowlands 1985!

bono sang with simple minds in two consecutive gigs!

me too j got this vinyl bootleg!

    ciao cheers from italy

  • i have this vinyl bootleg! if is it recorded in glasgow i've got that one!

    ciao

  • Holy crappp! Thanks for posting this. I would NEVER know this existed.

    U2 #1 fave band

    Simple Minds #2 favorite.

  • Just my best singers ! what a duo...

  • Gaynor is sick!

  • I'm a fuckin' golden oldie, 'turbomecca' ha ha

  • Young Bono is something!!!!!

  • Who? OH!!!! You mean that bloke singing with the breathtaking awesome incredible Jim Kerr!!! Yeah, s'pose he's alright...

  • looking forward for their next common gig, soon !!!

  • great performance! love it!

  • cool! sounds great!

    thanks for posting

  • I like it!

  • This gig was in Glasgow and not bloody Belguim. I know, i was there!! Showing my age again ha ha

  • Aaah, those were the days. Take me back, take me back 2 my youth, take me back to the higher ground and dream the dream once again!

  • that was fucking breathtaking. wish i would of been there.

  • It's awful. I love both bands but it is why each band has it's singer.

  • sure does, that,s why it,s one song and not rehearsed, that,t what I like about it ;)

  • Jim and Bono announced their engagement in 1983 in Belgium, very funny,it,s on my favorites ;)

  • Outstanding! Wonder if they are still close?

  • Bono >>>>>>> Jim

  • This is not Werchter. It's one of a number of gigs at Glasgow Barrowlands during the New Year of 84/85.

  • I agree, in Werchter they played together 11 O'clock Tick Tock, this is from Glasgow Barrowlands.
