Dont worry, everything will work out. Although Donner Pass is the more ideal route for intermodal traffic, I am certain UP will still keep the FRC line open. There are still manifest and dirt trains that run through the area regularly. Not only that, but if there were ever a problem on Donner, such as a derailment or too much snow, UP will need this route to keep all of their trains moving. Like the huge derailment on Donner last August that forced all freights over the FRC. I am not worried.
at the end of your video where is that yard and do you have any photos of it going to model the feather river canyon in HO and need information about what's there.
Right now the canyon is really dead during the day due to major track work, after this work is done Donner will be strictly Amtrak and intermodal and everything else will go through the canyon
The first east bound Intermodal went over Donner Summit on November 19, 2009. The first west bound Intermodal was the next day. My husband was the Engineer on that train. He too is going to miss the days of going down the FRC.
I heard from a very good source just yesterday that UP will have Donner open to intermodals as of tomorrow, the 7th and that is when they should have a few stacks "test" the tunnel work. Some intermodals will apparently be routed through FRC over the next couple weeks but all should be phased out to Donner by Thanksgiving.
You are correct. Though, just the other day I heard from my buddy up in Red Bluff that BNSF will be running 6-8 freights daily after the intermodals are gone. This is an increase of about 2 to 4 trains, now that there will be more room to run their trains quicker and more efficiently through the FRC.
Maybe all we are seeing then is a changing of the guard. It happened when the Union Pacific took over the WP, and perhaps BNSF will increase traffic on the FRC so they can secure a route to and from the Port of Oakland.
@C60AC Newsflash, James (aka Coaststarlight11) says UP will once again run stackers through the FRC as well as autos and heavy haulers. The Donner will be shut down for freights for maintenance. Only AMTK #5 and #6 will be regular runs while CTC is installed.
Yes, supposedly. Funny how things come back around, I told James about it! LOL. Thanks for the heads up. I'm keeping James updated as to when I start seeing/hearing an increase in traffic so he can go out to Gerlach and catch some rerouted intermodals out there. I'm not exactly sure what's going to happen though, at this point the whole thing is still only hearsay. No one has any solid facts about this happening. I first heard it from a source in Portola.
Even though grain trains and low priority manifests will still travel the FRC, it's still sad to see intermodals and priority trains not going through there. Excellent footage and made more dramatic with a legendary song.

FRC has a much lower ruling grade than Donner, so i'm sure it'll have a future still.

Sucks to hear that. I'm sure they will reroute Intermodal traffic through FRC on those occasions. Great video 5/5

This must be happening at the end of November. I was camped at Poe last night and saw at least three UP intermodals going east.
BTW nighttime railroad operations when viewed from the floor of the canyon is a great experience.

What will happen to the FRC? Will there still be other freight trains?
csxketh1 2 years ago
Yes, Union Pacific will still run freights not on a time-sensitive schedule through there and BNSF still have 2 daily trains.

My friend who works for UP said that all heavy westbound trains will take the canyon

Very nicely done. Interesting! I always though that stacks were always being over Donner.

This vid is major epic to the absolute max!!!!
It will be nice to see stack trains on Donner again (after almost 15 years) but yet it will be sad to see them leave Feather River.

Nicely done all around. Excellent editing, and this comment is from a former video editor.
Choice of music was nice. Ten stars from me too.

Very nice work, and what a great song choice. I haven't been there for so long, I need to get one last glimpse of a stack train through the canyon.

Appropriate use of the song, and good use of the fade. Think that the line will be totally abandoned?
Amiduffer 2 years ago
It won't, BNSF trains, as well as UP manifests and grain trains will come through

Oh, not a total loss then.

Nope, but it is a reduce in traffic
