i never knew about this show, loved spenser for hire and the Hawk character, Love Ben Sisko and DS9 is the best trek probably because Avery is such a powerful amazing actor. I'll have to try and fins this show on DVD, thanks.
I think that television was not ready for Avery Brooks portrayal of Hawk. He was a strong, black man leading a series. Unless he was being a comedian or a drug dealer (as the case to many times is) the networks weren't ready for it. DS9 proved that the times had definitely changed.
What's interesting is that for the first few years of DS9 Avery shaved the beard and grew his hair back, no doubt to distance Sisko from Hawk, before recovering the same look again in Season 4.
@gerrymoran1 gerry everyone wrote to rick berman and practically begged him to ask avery to readopt the HAWK look. the comicbooks fnas wanted it, people wrote to star log magazine. It was a fernzy so avery said, " Okay, I'll give them Hawk in space. Question is, are they ready for that?"
I think a lot of fans loved Hawk when he was a character on Spenser: For Hire. However, this did not mean that the character was compelling enough, nor deserved to be, the star of his own show. I think the failure of the show confirmed that Hawk was best when he was a side character, as opposed to being the lead.
It's hilarious when you look at the first season of DS9 and Avery Brooks had a different look from this one where he had a mini-fro and was shaved. Then later on, he went back to this look with the shaved head and goatee. Almost like he was channeling Hawks spirit in a new century where cool would rule the day.
@IronChefSpam agreed, a lot has to do with the manuerism of Sisko early on. Very tense and too serious. He loosened up physically. However, he loosened up to what we see in this opening scenes of Hawk, which aired way before DS9 did. In fact, it's a dead ringer for DS9 season 5+ Sisko in this intro.
This is great! I always liked Hawk. He seemed a tad more morally ambiquous than white-bread Spenser. He also had the whole Samuel L. vibe and you just knew he was gonna kick your ass if you crossed him. LOL - best of the Starfleet captains too!
I had never seen this show before and it would appear that may have been a blessing. This show looks truly awful. Avery looks like a gay Shaft rip-off who when he`s not getting his arse kicked (hit by a car, hiding under tables etc) spends his time playing the Xylophone (WTF!?!?!)
And some people are surprised it didn`t get renewed for another season. Jesus!!
Ha! I never knew there was a spin-off. Spenser for Hire used to be on at stupid-o-clock in the UK. The only I remeber about the show is Hawk's BMW 635 Csi, which made him the coolest guy ever.
does any one remember a film or show that had a guy like hawk but he had a metal hand that cud be fit with gizmoez like a drill, helping him and his team fight crime ha think they drove round in a van like the one in bluethunder tv series.
ABC had the brilliant idea to put Hawk up against the Cosby Show. No show could survive that time spot. I think the "silliness" some reviewers mention would have been dealt with had the show been given more episodes to get its equilibrium. It was a great concept. Perhaps it can be redone with a younger Hawk and maybe Avery in the Old Man role?
I thought the show "Hawk" was corney too Afrocentric Hawk on 'Spenser for hire' he carried the show and less was more but on his on show more was too much, still the coolest Brotha on TV ever but Stringer Bell gave him a run for his money not really.
A smooth, intelligence, and tough black hero. Nope. They couldn't handle it. THEY COULDN'T HANDLE IT!!!!! A cool black sidekick was acceptable. But more than that??? THEY COULDN'T HANDLE IT!!!!!!
@MisterCool I just thought I it was TOO afrocentric Hawk on Spenser for hire was mysterious,"OLD MAN" angle was interesting but the drum beating cultural angle didn't work you didn't know what side of the law he was on in spenser for hire and that added to it I thought it was too cultural like on the WIRE you didn't see Stringer Bell being so cultured until after he was killed and it added to him.
Avery Brooks is by far one of the most underrated actor's in Hollywood period! The man is a very talented actor, he has a really good look to him, and a matching voice to go along with it! I would love to see him in a big blockbuster movie before he retire's for good someday soon!
How old are you dude 17 or something?! Avery Brooks was in a whole lot of other shit way before he ever thought about doing Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Do some research on the man before you start popping off at the gum's without knowing his history!
no its sisko from deep space nine its a sci-fi programme its star trek, they made a film of it last year but sisko is white in that film and its set on a ship not a space station
Dude you got it backwards. Last year they remade the original Star Trek movie's all over again with an new original crew! A new Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, etc. etc.. Sisko's character had nothing to do with this at all.
I just seen A Man Called Hawk on TV ONE Yesterday! I havent seen the episodes since Feb of last year on TV ONE so I recorded the episodes on DVR because they really good. Some of the actors like Charles Dutton, Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett, Samuel Jackson, Wendell Pierce, Joe Morton, Vondi Curtis Hall, and more were guest stars on the show! Hawk is Bad Dude! They shouldve had at least 2 more seasons. Great show!
I completely forgot that he had a spin off from spencer for hire. I was explaining to my nephew that captain cisco was a guy called hawk in spencer, wow brings back memories and he doesnt seem to age..
I hardly watched Spencer, but really became aware of Avery Brooks in a telefilm, "Solomon Northrup's Odyssey," based on a book, "Twelve Years a Slave," by same. Northrup was a violin player with a wife and children who was approached to play a gig. By the film account, when he was on his way by carriage, Northrup was drugged, kidnapped and sold. Fine break from Hawk and probably paved the way to DS9.
I remember Hawk. It was a spin-off of Spencer For Hire (?), however, Avery Brooks will always be Captain Benjamin Sisko to me. Sisko is the epitome of a peaceful warrior. Any man that can raise a son alone, be in charge of a space station and slaughter Jem-Hadar ass and bring the Dominion to its Knees all at the same time has my vote.
Good God I miss that show! Hawk was the epitome and personification of cool. Nobody does the trench coat & dark glasses thing better than Avery Brooks.

I got most of the original "A Man Called Hawk" episodes on DVD. I got Episodes 1-2 and 5-13. The site I bought the DVD's from sent me a bad disk and I never heard back from them again! AARRGGGHHHHH!!!!
Loved it too casue they have the orignal outros like "Next up stay tuned for Head Of The Class..." LOL.
ANYONE out there's got the originals I will pay for shipping!
Robert B Parker is a very good novelist of this series spin-off,with"Spenser",and my favorite "Jesse Stone", cause he's a genuis of these crime/mystery books, 5 stars for this spin-off of Spenser, and this is a very great 80's show with Avery Brooks, and I'm hoping if it was a movie about this man named "Hawk".
That's some cool music right there. The 80s were weird. Everything seemed more interesting and funky then. But then I am a child of the 80s and fully prepared to acknowledge the possibility it's all nostalgia. Still real to me, damn it!
No, you're absolutely spot on! They were fantastic! Born in '75 myself so these were my childhood shows. Much better than the rubbish cartoons and reality (read crap) TV kids are subjected to today. :)
Hear! Hear! You hit the nail on the head, Malosinz. I pity the kids of today. They're getting so much crap fed to them as entertainment. The 80s had the BEST TV shows EVER!!
I never even knew this show existed - too bad it never caught on. Spencer was one of my favorite shows - and a lot of it was because of Hawk - man of few words, but always there when needed to pull Spencer's ass out of the fire. Great post!
Like others, I loved the show, only wish it lasted longer. I have been looking for copies of the shows, can't believe it hasn't been put on DVD...this show had a cult following!!
My wife surprised me with the ENTIRE Hawk series on DVD today and I was ecstatic! She found it on Ebay and as an added bonus it has the original 1989 commercials. Man I can't believe how lucky I am to have a wife that would do that.
Hawk was done bestl when imagination and his presence filled in the blanks. One episode, he's facing a man responsible for killing a female friend of his. There's a weapon on the floor. Hawk calmly says "I'll tell you this once old man, you got no chance at that gun..." camera leaves the room (pause) BLAM!!!! "fool!" Great "unseen" moment. Brooks just has a presence that he doesn't get credit for.
I remember when Hawk and Spencer fought it was a BIG deal! Of course it resulted in a tie BUT c'mon Hawk having a draw with Spencer is like Clubber Lang having a draw with Rocky. I think we all know in the real world who would have won.
I was a huge Hawk fan when he was a great character on Spenser. Couldn't wait to see this show. Then I saw the show. What an awful show about a great character. Could've been great. Turned out to be a 3rd rate bad Shaft imitation. Avery was too good for the idiots that created this show.
You can catch repeats of this on the TV One network friday mornings at 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. What's TV One? Well I can't tell you what it's not, and that's BET.
Tv One is the second black owned tv station in America. It is is owned by Kathy Hughes who owns radio one, a group of black radio stations all over the country. Actually some of the prgramming is much better than BET. It's really good. It comes on all cable packages and direct TV, unless you live in an area where they don't think blacks are, Haw comes on TV one during the days.
Spencer for Hire wasn;t much better Roman 515. Avery Brooks is a much better actor than Robert Urich. The acting sucked on both shows and they both were just another 80's cop show with bad acting. The appereance of both shows screams 80's like camera work and lighting. Just appreciate the show. It was never gonna be like Spencer.
I dig TV One I only wish that there was more original programming. I mean how many reruns of Good Times, Amen, The PJ's, Martin, and NY Undercover can a person watch. At least they're not showing That's My Momma.
Programming is tough for them as they are new. It won't be that way for long, but I enjoy these shows and shws like good times just because I like classic Television. They will move onto a new batch of re-runs soon. They are in their infancy and it will get better with time just like the radio stations which are great. Remember there's no blueprint for implementing a black tv netowork that whites and all will like. They have to pay bills too, which explains some of their programming.
TV one is one building here in DC that looks nothing like a telivision station. You would be surprised. They will get a lot better though. Give them time.
I can't appreciate the show. That was the point. Avery and Robert were both great, but Avery's character was much cooler, more interesting. That's what the waste was - the show took him from understated cool to over the top cheeseball. Avery is one of the best at subtle quiet power and charisma- someone changed the character for the solo show, or it would have lasted. I love Brooks.
I gurantee you that the changing the chracter was not the reason the show didn't survive. It is much deeper than that. There are shows that were great that have never been green-lighted. He was still subtle and cool in this to me, and he had the least-lines for a leading man I have ever seen. You have to change something from the original. They took a chance and it didn't work. They were also working with less capable writers and producers than Spencer. The overthetop Hollywood was protocal then
With all the crappy TV shows that have made it to DVD, you would think that the 13 episodes of this series would be out by now. IT only made one season so it may never happen. That depresses me greatly. I keep hoping that Brooks gets a huge hit movie and then some studio will want to exploit his heightened fame adn released these gems from the 80s.
Before a long and successful season as Capt. Ben Sisko of Star Trek Deep Space 9! He was Hawk the Shaft-esque hero. I watched this show religiously and it really sucked that this high octane show got canned. ABC has a great reputation to cancel great shows. And sadly to say this was one of them. Ahh the 80's, a pre reality show decade.
AVERY BROOK'S IN REAL LIFE IS NO SLOB OR JOKE VERY INTELLIGENT BROTHA, I THINK THE STAR TRACK SERIES FINALLY GAVE HIM HIS SHINE.

You also had a show in the 80's called "Fortune Dane," starring Carl Weathers.

He's not dead.

My wife surprised me with the ENTIRE Hawk series on DVD today and I was ecstatic! She found it on Ebay and as an added bonus it has the original 1989 commercials. Man I can't believe how lucky I am to have a wife that would do that.

Man you are so lucky! Been looking for them and Spencer for Hire.

Avery Brooks is a classicly trained actor noted for roles in Shakespere etc.

I want this series on DVD-yesterday!

SSSPENCAHHH!!! Awesome! It was a great show while it lasted. The modern day SHAFT of the time.

Naaah. Hawk was and is MUCH cooler than Shaft.
Kirok 3 years ago 3
It psyches people out. It's how he lets you know that he's one bad mother.
2wingo 4 years ago
I remember when Hawk and Spencer fought it was a BIG deal! Of course it resulted in a tie BUT c'mon Hawk having a draw with Spencer is like Clubber Lang having a draw with Rocky. I think we all know in the real world who would have won.
EYEluvGAMES 4 years ago
Not quite, because, if you recall correctly, that out of their two matches, Clubber and Balboa each won one.

I'm lucky ,I have all 13 shows on DVD,I loved this show, but you know the man had to take him off the air ha ha........

I was a huge Hawk fan when he was a great character on Spenser. Couldn't wait to see this show. Then I saw the show. What an awful show about a great character. Could've been great. Turned out to be a 3rd rate bad Shaft imitation. Avery was too good for the idiots that created this show.
Roman515 4 years ago 2
You can catch repeats of this on the TV One network friday mornings at 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. What's TV One? Well I can't tell you what it's not, and that's BET.
Waveman617 4 years ago
Tv One is the second black owned tv station in America. It is is owned by Kathy Hughes who owns radio one, a group of black radio stations all over the country. Actually some of the prgramming is much better than BET. It's really good. It comes on all cable packages and direct TV, unless you live in an area where they don't think blacks are, Haw comes on TV one during the days.
jdizzy75 4 years ago
Spencer for Hire wasn;t much better Roman 515. Avery Brooks is a much better actor than Robert Urich. The acting sucked on both shows and they both were just another 80's cop show with bad acting. The appereance of both shows screams 80's like camera work and lighting. Just appreciate the show. It was never gonna be like Spencer.
jdizzy75 4 years ago
I dig TV One I only wish that there was more original programming. I mean how many reruns of Good Times, Amen, The PJ's, Martin, and NY Undercover can a person watch. At least they're not showing That's My Momma.
Waveman617 4 years ago
Programming is tough for them as they are new. It won't be that way for long, but I enjoy these shows and shws like good times just because I like classic Television. They will move onto a new batch of re-runs soon. They are in their infancy and it will get better with time just like the radio stations which are great. Remember there's no blueprint for implementing a black tv netowork that whites and all will like. They have to pay bills too, which explains some of their programming.
jdizzy75 4 years ago
TV one is one building here in DC that looks nothing like a telivision station. You would be surprised. They will get a lot better though. Give them time.
jdizzy75 4 years ago
I'm keeping the faith for TV One. They do have it all over BET thats for sure.
Waveman617 4 years ago
Yeah they will be ok. Yeah TV One is better than BET. Pople just don't know it yet.
jdizzy75 4 years ago 4
I can't appreciate the show. That was the point. Avery and Robert were both great, but Avery's character was much cooler, more interesting. That's what the waste was - the show took him from understated cool to over the top cheeseball. Avery is one of the best at subtle quiet power and charisma- someone changed the character for the solo show, or it would have lasted. I love Brooks.
Roman515 4 years ago
I gurantee you that the changing the chracter was not the reason the show didn't survive. It is much deeper than that. There are shows that were great that have never been green-lighted. He was still subtle and cool in this to me, and he had the least-lines for a leading man I have ever seen. You have to change something from the original. They took a chance and it didn't work. They were also working with less capable writers and producers than Spencer. The overthetop Hollywood was protocal then

I want this on DVD so bad. This came out a year before I was born. I saw all 13 episodes on last year's labor day marathon on TV One.
I want this theme music along with the old HBO feaure presentation on my cellphone.

Admittedly, the title sequence IS inferior to that of Spenser: For Hire, but I've heard good things about the show.

They put crappy SLEGDEHAMMER on DVD and not this awsome show. This series should come back
tonyRed07 4 years ago
With all the crappy TV shows that have made it to DVD, you would think that the 13 episodes of this series would be out by now. IT only made one season so it may never happen. That depresses me greatly. I keep hoping that Brooks gets a huge hit movie and then some studio will want to exploit his heightened fame adn released these gems from the 80s.
cllamont 4 years ago 2
Before a long and successful season as Capt. Ben Sisko of Star Trek Deep Space 9! He was Hawk the Shaft-esque hero. I watched this show religiously and it really sucked that this high octane show got canned. ABC has a great reputation to cancel great shows. And sadly to say this was one of them. Ahh the 80's, a pre reality show decade.

Avery Brooks kicks ass. Personally, I think he should have tried out for a lead role in one of the CSI's
