  • Where are the Harpsichords?

  • How many Bach concertos does it take to sound awesome?

    Just one.

How many pianos does it take to play said concerto?

    Four.

  • Ouch. Playing it on piano, so awkward.

  • Wonderful, if Martha Argerich plays even better, thank you paquitolo, I did not know that you speak Spanish as well, gracias nuevamente.

  • not as impressive as 4 harpsichords, these people cant play harpischord for shit

  • Harpsichord! 4 Harpsichords! Where are they?

  • WHAT A GROUP!!!

  • =O El Cello es MISCHA MAISKY, y el piano EVGENY KISSIN????

  • @lucifer1010011010 Aren't you forgetting Gidon Kremer on violin at 02:42??

  • @nukepcr :O:O:O and Vadin Repim!! WOW! 05:20

  • This is brilliant!

  • Ummm isnt this from vivaldi Concerto for four violins?

  • @Edwin664 Ummm did you read the video notes?

  • @mikenbondi just now loool

  • @Edwin664 Bach's transcription for Vivaldi's L'estro Armonico Op. 10

  • @Edwin664 Please, read in info below the video.

  • @paquitolo This IS actually Vivaldi material. BWV 1065 is the only concerto not written by bach but transcribed into harpsichords from a Vivaldi concerto.

  • @cedrus78 As you can read in the info I mentioned Bach's concert is an adaptation Vivaldi's. Its more common identification is by using the BWV number just as Wolfgang Schmieder left written. I cannot make anymore, only keeping the correct catalog number because everyone can recognize it.

  • Vivaldi was considered "The father of the barroque", so it was exactly the other way around. Bach was his apprentice. It has anything to do with whose music is superior. Originally ,this concert was Vivaldi´s "Concert for 4 violins". This is a transcription by Bach.

  • Vivaldi concerto in b minor for 4 violins, transcription by Bach for 4 harpsicord

  • Vivaldi concerto in b minor for 4 violin trascription for 4 piano and violins

  • 1:33 to 1:53

    goosebumps over my body!

  • 5:29-7:24 is the most utterly transcendent music I've ever heard. Pletnev, Levine, Kissin and Argerich will always have a special place in my heart for this.

  • This video had me in tears. Thank you very much for uploading it.

  • although some people here are complaining about the pianos: i like it much more than the harpsichord version or vivaldis original. bach took this 3 pieces and reshaped them with a far greater depth and clarity(in my opinion) and brought those closer to perfection. just try listening to all the different voices. i myself cant do it often enough

  • one person mentioned about a year ago that it's not on harpsichord, and then everyone started complaining.

sheepish idiots, try having your own opinion for once.

  • @reinux haha, try to keep calm, please... it's a new year! :) Enjoy with Bach and his music. This is the most important above all.

  • @paquitolo its good to mention vivaldi too, since this music in the first place was composed by him

  • @1203456789 you only have to read the information below the video. Obviously, first thing we have to comment is that Bach used the original concert from Vivaldi.

  • i love it! both versions vivaldi and bach!

  • So fantastic.. There aren't words for describe it!

  • This has to be one of my top five Bach concertos. Now that I just read along with the score as I listened to this, I'm more impressed than ever with Herrn Bach and this piece of music. Wow. I love the Vivaldi, too, but not as much as I like the Bach transcription. Wow. Thanks for sharing this. It's superb. Prefer harpsichords, but this is wonderful.

  • @sosome57 I agree. THe playing here is very fine, pianistic but appropriate.

  • Too bad it's on piano :(

  • Masterpiece.

  • WTF ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ in haspischord concerts i want to hear HARPISCHORD NOT PIANO ¡¡¡¡¡

  • @ChundomanX Relax, man. If you want to hear harpsicord, just click on any related vid! I'm sure there are plenty...

  • Quel quatuor!! (piano)

  • it's better on Harpsichord, but my love of Gould has helped me appreciate the piano bach more.

  • where are the harpsichords ?! too bad because of it.

  • @hobosapiens PURIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:(

  • @JupiterIV it is just a preference. i like how this work sounds on harpsichords. the other thing that upsets me is the 'romantic' approach. but maybe at the end it is a matter of taste.

  • Isn't that Sarah Chang on second viollin? (am I late in noticing that, if I'm right?)

  • this video's been around for over 2 years. a couple people start whining about piano a year ago and suddenly everyone follows along.

    stupid sheep.

  • as I've always known about this concerto, this is Bach's piano version of a Vivaldi's violin concerto.

  • Martha Argerich!

  • Also FYI,

    Gidon Kremer on Violini

    Mischa Maisky playing cello

formidable group! Just wish there were less romantic.

  • they are so blesses to play with kissin

  • I remember this from Stephen Fears motion picture, "Dangerous Liasons" I never forgot it and had no idea it was Bach.

    ...It is utterly beautiful.

  • Like bathing in gold!

  • Bravo to the piano technicians - these pianos sound perfect together!

  • wimpy sounding. whats the point? you need that acerbic harpsichord sound!

  • ridicolo... e in più corrono pure

  • Is Vivaldi!!

  • @Maedgosa

See the info in this video:

"Bach's Concerto for Four Harpsichords and String Orchestra in A minor is an adaptation from around 1730-1733 of Vivaldi's B minor Concerto for Four Violins and String Orchestra in B minor, No. 10/3. Bach had gotten to know Vivaldi's Op. 3 while an organist at Weimar, where he transcribed ten of them for solo harpsichord and six of them for organ..."

  • @Maedgosa

Sorry, is Bach. Really. Trust me.

  • @harpsichordgal Es Vivaldi, adaptación de Bach. Trust me...jejejjej

  • @Maedgosa Viva Vivaldi!

  • Vadim Repin!!! impressive

  • What a dream team: all supermasters in music and their instrument! That's awesome!

  • GOOD!

  • Yuri Bashmet!!!

    Mischa Maisky!!!

  • wow Sarah Chang & Gidon Kremer

    :D!

  • ... and, although I love everyone of these great pianists, this version is quite awful...

  • An old friend of mine used to say,

"Bach is the proof of God's existence"

  • Your friend have reason. Totally agree.

Even if one does not believe in God.

  • Comment removed

  • The quote is (at least PARTLY) a joke. It's not a serious argument for the existence of God! You are taking it far too seriously, bersa. It's not a religious argument, it's just saying how great Bach is.

  • Comment removed

  • @bersa888: you have only see and read the info in the profile of my channel dedicated to Bach his relationship with God.

My comment was just an ironic thought for that people that don't believe on Him.

  • Yeah, just like brokencyde is the devil's music.

  • Comment removed

  • @AEFic: thanks, good point. That was exactly what I was suggesting.

  • @paquitolo May I suggest that you reassign the names of the pianists to which piano part it is they're playing? Mr. Kissin I know is Piano I. Mrs. Argerich is Piano II, and I haven't figured out the rest yet.

  • @JupiterIV Sure! We can do it. Although in my opinion, in the way I've introduced them, is easiest for the most part of people. But, yes, send me in which part is playing every one and I'll put it in the video info.

    Thanks! Regards.

  • Comment removed

  • @JupiterIV Done! Thanks JupiterIV.

    Greetings!

  • WHERE are the HARPSICHORDS??

    -__-

  • hola Javiera!

  • look his faces!! they are feeling the music's power that was created for the gods!

  • I'd rather the original Vivaldi's version

  • SItkovetsky!!

  • Its like the hall of fame of classical musicians!!!

  • Wow all the master players gathered together!

  • Los cuatro estan soberbios.Martha Argerich,solista increible y magica.

  • Too many play the 2nd movement too fast. This one I like. Bach vs. Vivaldi...who cares! Its all good.

  • Gidon Kramer is the first violin? 2:48

  • Yes, he is!

  • Yes, he is!

  • It should have been done on a forte piano how awesome would that have been!

  • this does not sound good in piano!!

  • @dmyrkur True.

  • Comment removed

  • @dmyrkur

    yep, true^^

  • @dmyrkur it sounds great in the piano also......but you can enjoy the gustav leonhardt consort version on original instruments.....

  • @dmyrkur Yes it does!!!

  • @dmyrkur To me it does. Not as good as it sounds using harpsichords, admittedly, but it's still nice.

  • OHH G,D sobervia........

  • magno

  • Hi(from Paris)

is anybody know a transposition for one piano? I would like to play this concerto

(if not, maybe I will play only the first piano)

    Agrippine

  • By the way, so many famous artists playing a concerto. It is as if 10 ferrari drive at 20mph in a small circle. Show down...

  • JSB rules!

  • Transposed, NOT composed by Bach!

I am even astonished it has an own BWV number.

  • It's not just transposed. He made very major adjustments;)

  • Still, it is not a composition by Bach. I knew only the Vivaldi original and could have sung every tune and motive with it. I am sure Bach would not have included in his compositions list.

We also say Bach-Busoni and not Busoni, despite great changes.

  • Is that true? What Major adjustments did he make?

  • I second that notion... This piano-transcribed bullshit is an insult to the harpsichord.

  • @thecritiquevirtuoso

Why not? Bach was the first composer to experiment on piano, I am sure he would be proud of this effort. In his age, he can only dream of an instrument as "flexible" and expressive as the modern piano.

  • This is high on my list of favourite works, and at first I thought--pianos instead of harpsichords--yuk!! But listening to it, I hear things that you can't hear with the original harpsichord version. With harpsichords you can't hear the individual parts as well, because they can't vary the volume. Here they all come through--it's quite a revelation. Four famous pianists too. Many many thanks for posting this....

  • Transcribing the violins into the noble piano sound is the smartest idea...indeed Bach would be so happy to hear that version. Amazed to sse so many geniouses under the sme roof!!! I wish I would be at this performance!!!

  • The strings seem to be constantly trying to stay in pitch - or to agree on one ;-)

  • the best part in this concerto is from 4:11 to 7:48

one of the greatest parts in the classical music at all.

  • Bach is the best (even if it was written by Vivaldi :P)

  • Vivaldi and Bach are good composers! Vivaldi is Bach's teacher! I think Vivaldi is the best!

  • No, my friend....Vivaldi is the Bach's apprentice by many things...such as the hights of the unsurpassable harmony

  • What a great collection of musicians and a wonderful performance. I prefer this played on harpsichord though, gives it more bite.

  • Omg!!!!!! This is sooooooo amazing +.+ Love this music +.+

  • ooooooooh - what a wonderful piece!!!

  • Lovely recording!

  • Ah, Martha and friends. Great performance.

  • What a star-studded performance! 4 excellent piano soloists with violin soloists backing them up.

  • A cute interaction between Sarah and Nikolaj at 8:15

  • are these harpsichord in disguise? O_o

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH PIANO!!!!!

  • I second that...

  • Is that lady one of Bach's descendants?

  • to wenaolong - .can you see a kind of resemblance. ? :):)

  • Yes. Blame it on the projective mechanism that chooses to see resemblences "just in case." But yes, I see one! She's looks like her great great great great great grandfather.

  • to wenaolong - so I guess they should be both abs.delighted......

  • Don't sound like a hapsichord. Nor do they look like it. These are clearly 4 grand pianos.

  • beautiful

  • i can´t see any harpsichord there

  • simply wonderful:

    wonderfully composed and performed,

    wonderful!

  • It's Wonderful

  • Well, they don't need to do it better, they are famous already, and the audience uncritical and unmusical. A true collection of the most famous horrible performers of today.

  • I'm sorry but this is a disaster. They did not rehearse this at all. The strings play out of tune, nothing is together(Kremer's entrance of 2nd movement!.) Look how Kissin tries to get some rhythm and musicality out of that zomby Levine at 4:23. The dotted notes are not together. These people have no timing, no taste, no respect towards the music.

  • I agree with you, especially the second movement looks (at least to me) half a disaster!!

  • Great observation about Levine. I have heard many versions of this work (including the Vivaldi original) and none so boring. I think what we are witnessing here is the arrogance of success. Unbelievable that the orchestra plays with more feeling than these so called maestros.

On a happier note, imagine a version with Glenn Gould overtracking himself in the studio for all the piano parts.

  • Agreed, about your vision of Glenn ...,

... but I personally prefer the Bach edition, to Vivaldi's.

  • Isn't it rather Pletnev following Kissin's fast scales (about 4'13")? I admit that, even if reading the score, I feel ill at ease about who's playing what!!

  • OMG !!!!

    amazing performance!!

    can´t belive

here is bashmet on the viola an that guy of the cello

    espectacular!

  • and where are the haspircords?? -.-

  • vivaldi's is bettter. and the original one!!!

  • Simply wonderful!

  • Amazing :3

  • isn't this music taken from Vivaldi's Estro Armonico Concerts...? I think so...

  • You are true.

It's Concerto for four violins in B Minor (RV 580) Antonio Vivaldi.

  • For both of you. Read the info added in the right side -->

    Regards.

  • My favorite concert!

  • Where are the harpsichords ? I see only piano's :S:S:S

  • love this!

  • Per Stellario82:

Bach non è italiano.. e Vivaldi non è tedesco!

  • -To stellario82: Bach's not Italian, and Vivaldi's not German!

    Why? What did he say?

  • and sarah chang is here.

  • IMPRESSIONANTE, INCRÌVEL!!

  • Why does this sound so much like Vivaldi's concerto for 4 violins?? Who was copying whom? lol I'd heard this piece first and then I heard the Vivaldi concerto for the first time today! They sound so similar in the beginning, it's crazy.

  • You're right, this is the same concerto. Bach redid several of Vivaldi's concertos (look around, you'll find them), making slight changes here and there.
