@paquitolo This IS actually Vivaldi material. BWV 1065 is the only concerto not written by bach but transcribed into harpsichords from a Vivaldi concerto.
@cedrus78 As you can read in the info I mentioned Bach's concert is an adaptation Vivaldi's. Its more common identification is by using the BWV number just as Wolfgang Schmieder left written. I cannot make anymore, only keeping the correct catalog number because everyone can recognize it.

Vivaldi was considered "The father of the barroque", so it was exactly the other way around. Bach was his apprentice. It has anything to do with whose music is superior. Originally ,this concert was Vivaldi´s "Concert for 4 violins". This is a transcription by Bach.
5:29-7:24 is the most utterly transcendent music I've ever heard. Pletnev, Levine, Kissin and Argerich will always have a special place in my heart for this.

@1203456789 you only have to read the information below the video. Obviously, first thing we have to comment is that Bach used the original concert from Vivaldi.
This has to be one of my top five Bach concertos. Now that I just read along with the score as I listened to this, I'm more impressed than ever with Herrn Bach and this piece of music. Wow. I love the Vivaldi, too, but not as much as I like the Bach transcription. Wow. Thanks for sharing this. It's superb. Prefer harpsichords, but this is wonderful.
@JupiterIV it is just a preference. i like how this work sounds on harpsichords. the other thing that upsets me is the 'romantic' approach. but maybe at the end it is a matter of taste.
"Bach's Concerto for Four Harpsichords and String Orchestra in A minor is an adaptation from around 1730-1733 of Vivaldi's B minor Concerto for Four Violins and String Orchestra in B minor, No. 10/3. Bach had gotten to know Vivaldi's Op. 3 while an organist at Weimar, where he transcribed ten of them for solo harpsichord and six of them for organ..."
The quote is (at least PARTLY) a joke. It's not a serious argument for the existence of God! You are taking it far too seriously, bersa. It's not a religious argument, it's just saying how great Bach is.
@paquitolo May I suggest that you reassign the names of the pianists to which piano part it is they're playing? Mr. Kissin I know is Piano I. Mrs. Argerich is Piano II, and I haven't figured out the rest yet.
@JupiterIV Sure! We can do it. Although in my opinion, in the way I've introduced them, is easiest for the most part of people. But, yes, send me in which part is playing every one and I'll put it in the video info.
Still, it is not a composition by Bach. I knew only the Vivaldi original and could have sung every tune and motive with it. I am sure Bach would not have included in his compositions list.
We also say Bach-Busoni and not Busoni, despite great changes.
Why not? Bach was the first composer to experiment on piano, I am sure he would be proud of this effort. In his age, he can only dream of an instrument as "flexible" and expressive as the modern piano.
This is high on my list of favourite works, and at first I thought--pianos instead of harpsichords--yuk!! But listening to it, I hear things that you can't hear with the original harpsichord version. With harpsichords you can't hear the individual parts as well, because they can't vary the volume. Here they all come through--it's quite a revelation. Four famous pianists too. Many many thanks for posting this....
Transcribing the violins into the noble piano sound is the smartest idea...indeed Bach would be so happy to hear that version. Amazed to sse so many geniouses under the sme roof!!! I wish I would be at this performance!!!
Yes. Blame it on the projective mechanism that chooses to see resemblences "just in case." But yes, I see one! She's looks like her great great great great great grandfather.
Well, they don't need to do it better, they are famous already, and the audience uncritical and unmusical. A true collection of the most famous horrible performers of today.
I'm sorry but this is a disaster. They did not rehearse this at all. The strings play out of tune, nothing is together(Kremer's entrance of 2nd movement!.) Look how Kissin tries to get some rhythm and musicality out of that zomby Levine at 4:23. The dotted notes are not together. These people have no timing, no taste, no respect towards the music.
Great observation about Levine. I have heard many versions of this work (including the Vivaldi original) and none so boring. I think what we are witnessing here is the arrogance of success. Unbelievable that the orchestra plays with more feeling than these so called maestros.
On a happier note, imagine a version with Glenn Gould overtracking himself in the studio for all the piano parts.
Isn't it rather Pletnev following Kissin's fast scales (about 4'13")? I admit that, even if reading the score, I feel ill at ease about who's playing what!!
Why does this sound so much like Vivaldi's concerto for 4 violins?? Who was copying whom? lol I'd heard this piece first and then I heard the Vivaldi concerto for the first time today! They sound so similar in the beginning, it's crazy.
You're right, this is the same concerto. Bach redid several of Vivaldi's concertos (look around, you'll find them), making slight changes here and there.
Where are the Harpsichords?

I'm sorry but this is a disaster. They did not rehearse this at all. The strings play out of tune, nothing is together(Kremer's entrance of 2nd movement!.) Look how Kissin tries to get some rhythm and musicality out of that zomby Levine at 4:23. The dotted notes are not together. These people have no timing, no taste, no respect towards the music.

I agree with you, especially the second movement looks (at least to me) half a disaster!!

Agreed, about your vision of Glenn ...,
... but I personally prefer the Bach edition, to Vivaldi's.

Isn't it rather Pletnev following Kissin's fast scales (about 4'13")? I admit that, even if reading the score, I feel ill at ease about who's playing what!!

-To stellario82: Bach's not Italian, and Vivaldi's not German!
Why? What did he say?

Why does this sound so much like Vivaldi's concerto for 4 violins?? Who was copying whom? lol I'd heard this piece first and then I heard the Vivaldi concerto for the first time today! They sound so similar in the beginning, it's crazy.

You're right, this is the same concerto. Bach redid several of Vivaldi's concertos (look around, you'll find them), making slight changes here and there.
