i still have all the independant albums and they are STILL great. They were a huge influence on me and my songwriting back in the day for New Concept and Greenhouse and i am sure jason Moon(me old songwriting partner) feels the same way. i have an old video tape of us and the northern pikes playing at the prince albert grandstand back in 1985,But time has deteriated it. i did find some tunes WE did live from that show and posted them on youtube but, BUT the pikes show i now need.PIKES STILL #1
This was their big song pre-record deal. This, Teenland and Dance Club were the big draw in the club scene back then. Never forget watching them at Louis' at the U of S and Confetti's in S'toon before they became big stars. Good times.
Wow!! Hadn't seen this Pikes vid before! Loved 'em "back in the day" ... Live at the TSC MUN, Oct '90 was one of the best Concerts I've seen in my life!
wow, I 'm from Edmonton and followed these guys since Secrets, I've never heard of this song before. Frankly it sounds pretty average in my books but that's cool it's on here, let alone was playing on a Fresno CA TV station in the mid 80's. Yes Canada had loads of great bands back in the 80's. Speaking of the Idols I picked up a 7 inch of theirs a few years ago at a flea market here, some song called Reajean and another one. Any one have the video for One Good Reason to upload?
This is so COOL!! I just saw them this weekend in Mackenzie BC...they still rock! Bryan couldn't believe how many Pikes videos youtube has. I hope they keep going with a half dozen gigs a year
anyone know why their earlier stuff sounds so sorta alternative and punky and ther later stuff is so straightforward rock with some country influence? I got no problem with it i love bands who change their sound just wondering if there's a particular reason
Don't know. Saw them a few times in Saskatoon before their first album. They had quite an edge back then and had the dance floors hopping. But when they went to record the producers smoothed them out. Teenland and Dancing in a Dance Club rocked back then but got wrecked when they hit vinyl.
Probably more of an unfluence of what sells. I saw them in '84 at a University dance as the opening act and this, and "You Sold the Farm" blew poor Johnny Dee Fury )the headliner) off the stage!
Hilarious! Was in school with the drummer Rob Esch from grade 4 through high school, while the rest of the band was a few years older. His all night birthday parties were the best! They used to play our high school dances when they were The Idols and my grade 12 grad when they were 17 Envelope. "Don't you worry...just dance."
Thanks so much for putting this up! What a GIFT to stumble upon it! I never even knew this existed. Probably 'cause I must have been in like grade two when they made it. lol
This was the shit at the time on MTV Europe. Too bad I couldn't find their records in mainland Europe back then. Remember kids, this was before Amazon, Internet and MP3 so thank God for technology.
The band in those days was Merl Bryck on vox, Jay Semko on guit and vox, Bryan Potvin on lead guit, Glen Hollingshead on bass, and Rob Esch on drums (though the recorded stuff was all drum mach, incl. this one). They became a 4 piece for the second indie album with Jay moving to bass and Merl to rhy guit. This video was made for a TV special in which they also lip-sync to several other songs. I could probably post those if there's any interest.
Hey you're welcome!...I figured it was pretty rare being their early work and all...I was never able to get this album back in the day here in the US, which was a drag. Really love this tune still!
You're welcome, right on! I love this tune...Not being from Canada, I'm really only slightly familiar with their body of work, but this song in particular I still dig big time!

OMG! I still think this was the best Pikes song ever. Although Snow In June and any live version of Teenland are close. Thanks for this!

Anybody got any "The Idols" video?

currently the pikes are collaborating with Les Stroud (the survivorman) and it sounds great

They played this on MTV Europe?? No way!! I couldn't get this record in the states here either...totally sucked..
jsbx5 5 years ago
Yes way!! Not this song though, but a later one. Can't remember the title but it was in 1988. Ah, them innocent alcohol fueled days...

Very cool! Sounds like you were pretty into this band aye? I say post 'em! Please let us know when you do!
jsbx5 5 years ago
If you look closley, that's actually Jay Semko as the second guitar player. Guess he switched to bass later. Had no idea!
joshua0112 5 years ago
Wow!! Thanks for this!!! This is a really rare video, even before they got signed to a major label.
Never though I'd get to see this.

This must be...like the first video they ever did....
They are a five piece? and they have an extra guitarist
and different drummer... interesting..
their future stuff is...and seeing that they reunited and came out with
another three or four albums ....still is EXCELLENT
this is barely the very tip of the iceberg of these guys.
one of my favourite bands of all time.
drjingles 5 years ago
It probably was their first! Being from the states here, I really didn't get to hear much from this band back in the day, but I still dig this tune!
jsbx5 5 years ago
Thanks, I've only ever heard a clip of this song, much less the video.

I'd still sleep with Merl even though he's put on a few.
MuscleJacker 5 years ago
Hah! Well, I dont' know about that, but I will say that we must have a lot of 80's Canadian bands in common!

lol I've had a crush on Bryan since I was 14. Or maybe 13. It could possibly even be 12. I'm terrible with timelines. :p
