As I watch this it's reminding me of something I have seen and it's just dawned on me that Carnival is a remake of the musical film "Lili" starring Leslie Caron which is one of my favorite movies. Love Makes the World Go Round has the same music as "Hi Lili, Hi Lo" but of course has different lyrics. I've never seen Carnival, so I never made the connection until now, but I found "Lili" a beautiful and haunting film.. A "break out the tissues" movie for me. By the way...these kids are terrific!
We use people instead of puppets for several reasons.
1. Like you noticed, our theater is huge and puppets would get lost.
2. It gave 4 more people an opportunity to have roles
3. We knew we wanted to have this big dance for the final scene where the puppets dance with Lili ( I will try to post this so you can see it) So then we thought, why not make them puppets the entire show-it worked really well.
Amazing. This is fantastically amazing. We did this in HS about a zillion years ago the year after it closed on broadway. I thought it was fantastic back then but this is AWESOME!!! I played 1st flute in the orchestra(yes...orchestra)! What memories. I can't wait to see all the numbers. "the rich go here, the rich go there", wow. Thank you, thank you, TY, TY++++++++.
It is a sizeable supporting role. Jacquot's big song is Cirque de Paris and he has quite a bit of dialogue with Lili and with Paul the puppeteer. I would say about a 6-7. Break a leg...it is a beautiful show!

I did this show in college. Very interesting take on having the puppets played by actor's rather than puppets.
