The game-price pays for the development of the actual game, plus the fifty hours of game play you get with it. The subscription covers the running of the servers, the salaries of the people running the servers, the cost of the buildings where the servers are located, This shit aint cheap. APB offers an hourly system, so if you don't play all the time, you buy 20 hours for about six dollars and depending on how you play, it could last you ages. I think thats a pretty nice way of going about it.

People rage against monthly fees who don't understand how MMOs work. No MMO is free because servers, which you need to run the game, are expensive to run. Extremely expensive. Then you have to hire people too keep douche bags from running around shouting Penis all day long. MMOs also need to be updated with fixes and new content constantly, which means hiring programmers. Paying to play an mmo is the same as paying for gas for your car. You may opt not to but then your car is a lawn ornament.

Now games are million dollar investments and MMOs are MULTI million dollar investments. Investors put up that money for the company to use to produce the game. They don't care about catering to your desires. Most of them have never touched a video game in their lives. And they want their money back. Now. That's how it works.

Bullshit; there are enough games with multiplayer without a monthly fee. People can rent servers to host themselves or make dedicated servers, and a simple voting system to kick or ban puts a pretty nice end to spammers; you don't have to hire people for that.

Almost every game I ever played needed patches, and they were all free, so why should this be different?

APB is just another game I won't play because of monthly fees; I think they achieve the opposite of what they want.

@G2442g There are no free MMOs. They all have a way of getting money out of you. Yes a person can rent a server. Do you know how many high powered servers an MMO takes or how expensive they all are? Where do you suppose they house them all? In a field somewhere in Kentucky? How many people do you suppose it takes to maintain them? You have no idea of the logistics behind an MMO. Yes, some of your subscription gets kept as company profit. But most of it goes to maintaining the game.

No free MMO's? Did someone wipe Guild Wars out of existence, then? NCsoft covers the costs by publishing expansions, making people happy with more gameplay, instead of making people quit playing the game because simply playing has already cost them a lot of money.

That's the best way to make and sell MMO's, and making people pay over and over again to play the same game is just crap.

If NCsoft can maintain Guild Wars, other MMO publishers should be able to do the same.

Games like City of Heroes have expansions to. But most of them are FREE since their costs are covered by your monthly subscription. You just do not get it. Not everyone wants to pay more than once for a game and by publishing an expansion you don't force people to pay for your game multiple times; you give them an opportunity to buy extra gameplay. Not the right to play again where you already paid for in the first place.

@G2442g The only mmo I've ever played that was completely free, no expansions, monthly fees, or all the good gear you can only get with real world money, is Dungeon Fighter. You do buy "avatar" items with real world money which make your characters look different and give small stat boosts but you can buy those off other players. They'll charge you a TON of gold for them though. They can do this because most of the game is P2P rather than P2Server. Which is farrr cheaper but can lag.

Anyway, I'm glad I didn't buy APB, it saved me a lot of money and a game that's useless now, because (despite being a monthly fee/ pay per hour game) Realtime got bankrupt and those multiple expensive servers you're talking about were shut down.

Next year K2 will come with APB: Reloaded and lucky for me it will be free to play.
