They start the kids off on a box violin, and then move them up to the real thing. It's estimated 8-9mo's before kids really know how to properly hold their violin, and know all the parts of the violin. My baby is pressing too hard and that's why it's squeaking right now lol.
I have always been amazed that just after a few lesson, little kids know when their fiddle needs tuning.
