I just got a vx7r yesterday but it's not picking up anything and something is f'ed up with the squelch. Even on its lowest setting (1) even a strong signal isn't bypassing the squelch. So when I'm on a station I know has a good signal, I have to manually hit the squelch button or hold it down to hear what is being transmitted. I've tried a bunch of stuff but nothing is working

yes yes. ill let you believe that. if you can crack DES and APL / Crypto keys then youd be a milli. analog you can play with. Digital DES/APL is no where near analog and even if you got a digital unit you cant interfere with them. you have to be part of system. there fore system id number. unit id number of radio. and talk group id. this was made so this stuff dont happen. if it has a repeater capable of TDES/SysSafe good luck because DES just gets more screwy for a pirate with cryptogram PTT.
